THANKS KELLY.

TALKING POLITICS NOW,

PRESIDENT OBAMA AND MITT ROMNEY TRADE JABS OVER ROMNEY'S DAYS WITH BAIN CAPITOL.

THE PRESIDENT REFUSES TO BACK DOWN THIS AFTERNOON.

NBC'S PETER ALEXANDER REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

ROMNEY AND OBAMA-PKG

In what's become an increasingly bitter slugfest.

. both President Obama and Mitt Romney are fighting to control this summer's political debate.

In an interview with NBC's Norfolk, Virginia affiliate this weekend, the President rejected Romney's call for an apology over the Obama campaign's attacks.

q: "First of all, you're not going to apologize? potus: no we wont be apologizing."

In fact, the Obama campaign is doubling down in a new ad, using Romney's own rendition of "America, the Beautiful" to attack his jobs record.

"American the Beautiful."

For his part, Romney is slamming President Obama for what he has called an "outrageous" and "reckless" campaign.

SCHIEFFER: "Whatever happened to hope and change? I'm Mitt Romney and I approve this message."

In an interview with CBS News. the President admitted Washington "feels as broken as it did four years ago."

And, he conceded that his handling of the economy -- the basis for Romney's attacks -- is fair game.

OBAMA: "You don't hear me complaining about him making that argument because if I was in his shoes, I would be making the same argument."

Romney -- who spent the weekend relaxing at his summer home in New Hampshire, attending church Sunday morning -- is still fending off questions about the timing of his departure from Bain Capital.

One of Romney's former partners at Bain told MSNBC Sunday that -- even though Romney is listed on SEC documents as the CEO of Bain after 1999 -- he was no longer running the firm when companies Bain managed began outsourcing jobs.

"During that time, a management committee ran the firm. And we could hardly even get Mitt to come back to negotiate the terms of his departure because he was working so hard on the Olympics."

Still, the Democrats continued their offensive against Romney.

EMANUEL: "Stop whining. I give him his own advice. Stop whining."

And, during our interview Friday, Romney challenged the Obama campaign, once again insisting he would only release two years of tax returns.

"Their strategy is to quote 'Kill Romney,' end of quote. And the American people want instead a discussion about the direction of the country." Return to index of stories...

THE MAN AT THE HELM OF THE FATAL COSTA CONCORDIA ACCIDENT SPEAKS OUT.

CAPTAIN FRANCESCO SCHETTINO SITS DOWN FOR AN EXCLUSIVE WITH MICHELLE KOSINSKI. Return to index of stories...

CONCORDIA CAPT SPEAKS-PKG

No one can imagine again the pain that you may experience.

"If you say just simply sorry, sorry is not the term for the accident."

Captain Francesco Schettino now accepts, he says, responsibility for the January crash of the Costa Concordia that sent more than 4 thousand people scrambling to get off. 32 of whom did not make it.

"I am not blaming nobody but for me.more than that. I am clear with my conscience."

Calling the disaster a chain of unfortunate errors.

He says they didn't intend to pass as close to the island as they did-- Pointing to possible technical problems.

"Something inside that compass went wrong."

"The rock was marked on the charts but the depth of the water on the charts was more than in the reality it is."

Again, insisting his turning the ship closer to land-- saved lives.

"Otherwise we would have collided straight bounce on the rocks and that case there really would die thousands of persons."

So why didn't he sound the abandon ship alarm, for nearly an hour? Why first tell authorities it was just a power outage?

And he denies abandoning ship, he says the tilting threw him into a lifeboat while he was helping people. says he actually tried to persuade another boat to bring him back.

"At the end of the story it is very easy to find a scapegoat for the accident. Th e captain went insane and lets finish the story. I take my responsibility as a gentleman and a man. I take my responsibility. "

"Schettino says look the captain is always responsible but this was an accident and all the blame should not lie with him. He was not paid for this interview, he said he wanted to do it to tell the truth, not try to justify his actions. Back to you." Return to index of stories...

It's been a busy day - and a milestone as well. With much of the US team and athletes from dozens of other nations arriving today, Heathrow airport is expecting some 237,000 passengers over this 24 hour period - that should easily break the previous record of 234k at this, Europe's largest airport.

So far, no reports of major losses of gear at least, despite everything from horses to pole-vaulting poles to mountain-bikes, you name it.

"We're feeling great, it's great to be in London. You know, obviously we've been working a while for this."

"But we are ready, we are ready for the Games to start."

Officials have put on an extra 1,000 volunteers at Heathrow to help the athletes get to where they're going.

Heathrow's saying it's got things under control.

But what they can't control, of course, is the weather. And the forecast doesn't look good - thunderstorms are expected later this week, and WET weather will be likely during late July into August, just when the Games take place. I'm Jim Maceda, reporting from London, now back to you." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Rain a good bet Monday"

Showers will redevelop over Southwest Florida today, and this time it looks as though our best rain chance will come in the morning and early afternoon. T he best rain chances later in the day will be over the interior, but an afternoon shower still can't be ruled out for the rest of us with so much moisture in place.

We'll notice more clouds than normal for a July day in Southwest Florida, but sunshine will still mix in with the clouds at times through the day. The clouds and rain will at least help keep temperatures at bay. Our daytime high temperatures will range from the mid to upper 80s, but locations that see lots of rain could only warm into the low to mid 80s.

An onshore flow will remain in place Tuesday, which often means locations closer to the beaches and the urban corridor see the best rain chances earlier in the day while locations deeper inland stand the best chance of getting hit by a storm during the afternoon and evening. We also expect more sun Tuesday, so look for highs in the low 90s.

Rain chances will be diminished somewhat by mid week as a ridge of high pressure build over Southwest Florida. Another result of this ridge will be higher temperatures, and we very well could see a heat index between 100-105 by Thursday and Friday.

By the upcoming weekend, temperatures won't be quite as oppressive, and we'll see a return of our typical afternoon thunderstorm pattern. Return to index of stories...

THE BLISTER BEETLE MAY JUST BE A LITTLE INSECT BUT WHEN YOU ADD THOUSANDS OF THEM OVER A SHORT AREA. THEY CAN COVER ACRES OVER A MATTER OF DAYS. WHEN YOU ADD GRASSHOPPERS ON TOP OF THAT. IT JUST COMPOUNDS THE PROBLEM.

"We're too far in the game to let them eat it up."

THEY HAVE A SPRAY RIG THAT THEY EQUIP WITH INSECTICIDE BUT WHEN EXTRA MONEY IS ALREADY BEING SPENT ON IRRIGATION.

"It's just another expense that we have to put out to control them."

BUT IF THEY DON'T GET TO THE INSECTS EARLY ON. THE AMOUNT OF DESTRUCTION CAN HAVE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS ON THEIR OVERALL OPERATION.

NEW ALZHEIMERS REPORT-OC

ON THE MEDICAL FRONT THIS AFTERNOON,

NEW WARNING SIGNS TO LOOK FOR IN THE FIGHT AGAINST ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE.

IT'S ESTIMATED ONE IN EVERY EIGHT AMERICANS OVER 65 HAS THE DISEASE.

HERE'S NBC'S DOCTOR NANCY SNYDERMAN. Return to index of stories...

NEW ALZHEIMERS REPORT-CLIP PKG

IT MAY SOUND SURPRISING BUT NEW RESEARCH PRESENTED TODAY SUGGESTS SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS THE WAY WE WALK COULD BE AN EARLY WARNING SIGN OF MENTAL DECLINE.

RESEARCHER SOT: subtle motor changes or gait speed changes that you can detect may be a warning system to kind of let you know there might be some abnormal pathology in the brain that could lead to cognitive decline later on.

GRAPHIC

RESEARCHERS LOOKED AT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BRAIN FUNCTION AND THE GAIT OF A PERSON'S WALK -- MEASURING THINGS LIKE SPEED, RHYTHM AND STRIDE.

WHILE CHANGES IN WALKING ARE EXPECTED WITH AGE.AND SLOWING DOWN IS NOT NECESSARILY A CAUSE FOR CONCERN, PEOPLE WITH ALZHEIMER'S, AND THOSE WITH LESS ADVANCED COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT, WALKED SLOWER THAN PEOPLE WITH NORMAL MENTAL FUNCTION.

RESEARCHER SOT: we may be able to catch cognitive decline at an earlier stage by focusing in addition to their thinking abilities um to their walking abilities and their motor abilities.

NANCY STANDUP: IT'S BEEN GENERALLY ACCEPTED THAT REGULAR PHYSICAL EXERCISE CAN IMPROVE HEALTH AS WE AGE AGE.BUT NOW, STUDIES ARE LOOKING AT WHICH TYPES OF ACTIVITIES ARE MOST EFFECTIVE, AND WHY.

IN ANOTHER STUDY PRESENTED TODAY, SCIENTISTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH FOUND EVIDENCE THAT SUGGESTS WALKING COULD HELP DECREASE KNOWN RISK FACTORS FOR ALZHEIMER'S MORE THAN OTHER TYPES OF EXERCISE.

A PART OF THE BRAIN RESPONSIBLE FOR REGULATING MEMORY, EMOTION AND LEARNING CHARACTERISTICALLY SHRINKS IN PATIENTS WITH ALZHEIMER'S.BUT, IN PEOPLE WHO EXERCISED AEROBICALLY BY WALKING REGULARLY FOR A YEAR IT GREW, COMPARED TO THOSE WHO SIMPLY STRETCHED AND TONED.SOMETHING EXPERTS SAY IS EVIDENCE LIFESTYLE CAN IMPACT THE BRAIN EVEN AS WE AGE.

EXPERT: very clearly the best thing that you can do for your brain all throughout your life and especially as you age is physical exercise

WITH MORE RESEARCH, UNDERSTANDING THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN EXERCISE, MOTOR SKILLS AND MENTAL FUNCTION COULD HELP DOCTORS DIAGNOSE, TREAT AND MONITOR DEMENTIA.

INDUSTRY ANALYSTS AREN'T SURPRISED BY THE SURGE IN CAR SALES. GIVEN WHAT CONDITION THE OLD ONES ARE IN.

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS --

IF YOU DON'T WANT AN UPHILL CLIMB THAN CYCLING'S NOT FOR YOU.

BUT IT FITS THE BILL FOR RIDERS WITH THE GEAR, THE STRENGTH.

"I"m not a kid anymore."

.AND THE DRIVE.

"Since about April I've ridden about 500 miles."

80-YEAR-OLD BOB STIDWELL IS A CYCLING NUT WHOSE ALL ABOUT THAT CHALLENGE.

"It's a mission."

BUT HIS ROAD HASN'T ALWAYS BEEN SMOOTH. NO, LATELY EACH MILE HAS A DEEPER MEANING.

"I, Robert R. Stidwell, have a dream to honor my wife Pat."

SO BEGINS A SIX-PAGE PLEDGE INSPIRED BY WHAT BOB CALLS THE DREAM

"Was literally night after night. But this dream developed and prodded me throughout her illness."

IT'S A CALL TO ACTION THAT HE SAYS CAME TO HIM AS HE SLEPT ALONGSIDE HIS WIFE'S HOSPITAL BED.

"Many, many, many people that I talked to never heard of multiple myeloma."

MULTIPLE MYELOMA IS A TYPE OF BLOOD CANCER.

THE DISEASE KILLED 11-THOUSAND PEOPLE IN THE U.S. LAST YEAR, INCLUDING BOB'S WIFE PATRICIA.

"Literally, how could I, one person, make a difference?"

SO BOB DUSTED OFF HIS BIKE, DONNED HIS HELMET AND SET HIS WHEELS IN MOTION.

EVERY SATURDAY HE RIDES TO DIFFERENT ALBERTSON'S STORES WHERE HE RAISES MONEY AND HE REALIZES HE'S NOT ALONE.

BOB HAS RAISED $14,000 AT 11 STORES SINCE APRIL.

IT'S BIT SHY OF HIS $1 MILLION GOAL.

"Even though I'm 80, I just want to do it."
