Lawyers for both sides are still whidling down the pool of jurors before the trial gets underway.

The process is taking all day.

With 73 potential jurors to choose from, both sides want to build the best 6 to 8 person jury.

Nathan lee is suing the Charlotte county sheriffs office saying dispatchers could have prevented his wife's murder. Return to index of stories...

NATHAN LEE TRIAL-VO

In the courtroom today, lawyers tried to determine if the jurors have a bias in the case and would be able to make a fair decision.

They wanted to know if jurors know any of the witnesses, how they feel about religion, and rewarding monetary damages.

This civil lawsuit comes after Michael king was convicted of abducting, raping and murdering Denise amber lee in January 2008.

A Sarasota county jury convicted him and he's on death row.

Nathan lee, Denise's widower claims a Charlotte county dispatcher didn't pass on a tip to deputies in the area who might have been able to stop king before he murdered Denise.

He's asking the court for 750 thousand dollars in the wrongful death lawsuit. Return to index of stories...

NATHAN LEE TRIAL-REM-LIVE

Because the sheriffs office is a public entity, it can only pay up to 200-thousand dollars without lee asking the state legislature to grant the rest of the winnings should the jury side with him.

Opening arguments will begin after the jury is selected.

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

RAIN CONTINUES THROUGH MIDWEEK

An onshore flow will remain in place Tuesday, which often means locations closer to the beaches and the urban corridor see the best rain chances earlier in the day while locations deeper inland stand the best chance of getting hit by a storm during the afternoon and evening.

Partly cloudy skies will be the rule for Tuesday, too. The added sun will allow temperatures to be around our average of 92.

Thunderstorms will be diminishing somewhat by mid week as a ridge of high pressure build over Southwest Florida. Another result of this ridge will be higher temperatures, and we very well could see a heat index between 100-105 by Thursday and Friday.

By the upcoming weekend, temperatures won't be quite as oppressive, and we'll see a return of our typical afternoon thunderstorm pattern.

Right now the tropics are quiet! Return to index of stories...

WHEN NATASHA STUMP AND HER HUSBAND DECIDED THEY DIDN'T WANT TO HAVE ANY MORE KIDS NATASHA'S HUSBAND TOLD HER A VASECTOMY WAS OUT OF THE QUESTION.

"He's a man. Haha, sorry. He didn't want any pain."

BUT WHAT IF THERE WERE OTHER OPTIONS?

RESEARCHERS SO FAR HAVE FOUND MALE BIRTH CONTROL PILLS TO BE EFFECTIVE FOR SOME MEN AND NOT OTHERS FOR UNKNOWN REASONS. AND SIDE EFFECTS CAN INCLUDE WEIGHT GAIN, ACNE, DEPRESSION AND POSSIBLE HEART PROBLEMS. STILL THERE ARE OTHER PROMISING FORMS OF MALE CONTRACEPTION ON THE VERGE OF GETTING APPROVED.

"The testosterone gels and progestin gels, those combinations are probably the ones that hold the most promise as of now."

"Every day you use a small amount, you put it on the abdomen and also on the arms."

DOCTOR CHRISTINA WANG SAYS THE GEL WORKS MUCH LIKE FEMALE BIRTH CONTROL WITHOUT A LOT OF SIDE EFFECTS.

"It delivers a constant level of hormones."

BEFORE APPLYING THE GEL…

"You can see that they are lots of sperm moving around."

AND AFTER…THE SPERM ON THE SLIDE BARELY MOVE. DOCTOR WANG SAYS IT'S ALSO REVERSIBLE, TAKING MEN THREE TO SIX MONTHS TO REGAIN FERTILITY. NON-HORMONAL CONTRACEPTIVES ARE ALSO ON THE HORIZON, LIKE THERAPEUTIC ULTRASOUND COMMONLY USED TO RELIEVE INJURED JOINTS WITH HEAT.

"We really think that men deserve to have more choices when it comes to contraception."

RESEARCH LED BY DOCTOR JAMES TSURUTA SHOWED BY ROTATING HIGH-FREQUENCY ULTRASOUND AROUND THE TESTES, THEY COULD KILL MOST OF THE SPERM- CELLS IN RATS IN JUST TWO 15 MINUTES SESSIONS. ANOTHER SET OF RESEARCHERS SHOWED THE TECHNIQUE ALSO WORKED IN PRIMATES AND WAS REVERSIBLE. FINALLY, WHAT ABOUT A REVERSIBLE VASECTOMY? THE PROCEDURE CALLED RISUG TAKES ABOUT 15 MINUTES WITH A DOCTOR, IS EFFECTIVE AFTER ABOUT THREE DAYS AND LAST FOR 10 OR MORE YEARS. IT REQUIRES A ONE-TIME INJECTION OF A HARMLESS GEL INTO THE DUCT THAT TRANSFERS SPERM IN THE PENIS. THE SOLUTION DEACTIVATES THE SPERM AND IS REVERSIBLE WITH A SECOND INJECTION.

"Yeah definitely much better than getting snipped."

RISUG IS IN ADVANCED CLINICAL TRIALS IN INDIA…AND COULD BE WIDELY AVAILABLE IN THE U-S IN THREE YEARS. NOW THE QUESTION REMAINS IF MEN WILL USE IT…I'M ANDREW MCINTOSH REPORTING. Return to index of stories...

THE SUMMER OLYMPICS GET UNDERWAY NEXT WEEK AND ONE OF THE BIG MEDAL HOPEFULS FOR THE U.S. SWIM TEAM IS MISSY FRANKLIN.

LEADING UP TO THE GAMES, NBC 2 IS LOOKING AT THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE U-S OLYMPICS.

IN THIS STORY, WE DISCOVER HOW MISSY FRANKLIN APPLIES THE ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES OF FLUID DYNAMICS AS SHE SWIMS FOR THE GOLD. Return to index of stories...

SOO: MISSY FRANKLIN-PKG

Just 17-years-old, Missy Franklin is already a swimming phenom.

In 2011, she set a world record in the 200-meter backstroke and dominated at the World Championships - success she hopes to continue at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

One of Franklin's biggest advantages in the pool is her size: 6-foot-1 with strong shoulders and long limbs that allow her to maximize thrust and overcome drag, two key components of fluid dynamics.

TIM WEI, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Thrust is what pushes the swimmer forward, and drag is the resistance of the water to the motion of the body.

From the moment the race starts, Franklin is in a battle against 3 types of drag.

'Frictional drag,' sometimes called 'viscous drag,' happens when friction pulls the water next to her body along with her, making it harder to move forward.

As she picks up speed, Franklin also encounters 'pressure drag' as the water moves around her head and body and doesn't reattach until past her feet, creating a pressure difference.

Franklin also encounters a third type of drag called 'wave drag.'

As she moves forward, some water is pushed in front of her creating a wave barrier to her progress.

Franklin counters these 3 types of drag with thrust, the propulsive force that moves her through the water.

TIM WEI, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The whole process of swimming technique is getting your body to move in as efficient a way as possible so you maximize the thrust.

MISSY FRANKLIN

Something about my last part of my race just really gets me going and I just move my arms and legs as fast as I possibly can.

Using thrust to counter drag, Franklin takes advantage of the principles of fluid dynamics to reach for Olympic gold. Return to index of stories...

FOR SEVEN YEARS, PEGGY POPPER LIVED WITH A HUMBLING CONDITION. URGE INCONTINENCE LEFT HER UNABLE TO CONTROL HER BLADDER. SHE FOUND HERSELF RUNNING TO THE BATHROOM.

PEGGY POPPER/INTERSTIM PATIENT

RUNS:

:32 All the time. I had a few misadventures with it. So I had to stay close to home.

IT'S ESTIMATED AT LEAST 17-MILLION PEOPLE SHARE HER PAIN. AND HER CONDITION. A VOIDING DYSFUNCTION OR OVERACTIVE BLADDER.

DR. MARK MINTZ/UROLOGIST

RUNS:

3:00 If you're leaking and you're having to wear Depends or having to go to the bathroom every hour to hour and a half or two hours, you don't really have a lifestyle. What we're trying to get back is people; we basically give them back their social life.

WHEN LIFESTYLE CHANGES OR MEDICATION DOESN'T WORK, PATIENTS MAY BENEFIT FROM INTERSTIM THERAPY, IT USES A MEDICAL DEVICE TO PROVIDE NEURO STIMULATION TO TAME THE OVERACTIVE BLADDER.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

The device is smaller than the palm of your hand. It's implanted on upper, backside of the hip where it stimulates the nerves that control the bladder.

DR. MARK MINTZ/UROLOGIST

RUNS:

4:42 I call it the pacemaker, but they call it a generator or stimulator to the area. It basically sends a pulsation though the wire. It's almost like telling the nerve to be quite.

A HAIR-LIKE WIRE TOUCHES THE NERVE, IT'S REGULATED BY THE GENERATOR. THE DEVICE RUNS ON A BATTERY THAT LASTS 5-8 YEARS. AT WHICH TIME DOCTORS WILL REOPEN THE SITE AND REPLACE THE CELL. A PRICE PEGGY IS WILLING TO PAY, TO TAKE CONTROL OF HER BLADDER.

PEGGY POPPER/INTERSTIM PATIENT

RUNS:

:54 I would say that since I've had it put in, it goes on my time.

DR. MARK MINTZ/UROLOGIST

RUNS:

12:15 That's the whole idea, they don't have to worry about whether they've got a leak or going to have an accident. That's a game-changer for a lot of people.
