FIRST WEATHER TOSS-RADAR TOPS ANIBOX

HELLO EVERYONE.

KEEP THE RAINCOAT HANDY.

WE'RE STARTING WITH RAIN ON THE RADAR AT NOON.

LOTS OF ACTIVITY IN PUNTA GORDA AND FORT MYERS.

JIM REIF IS TRACKING THIS SYSTEM - THAT'S LEAVING A LOT OF US SOGGY THIS AFTERNOON. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER JIM-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"More wet weather Tuesday"

After seeing lots of rain over Southwest Florida yesterday, it looks like today is going to be yet another wetter than normal day for us with rain chances around 60%.

Showers will get going as soon as this morning for some of our coastal communities but will stay fairly isolated. As the morning evolves, however, plentiful moisture and a little daytime heating will lead to the development of additional showers along with a few storms, most of which will affect areas close to the coast and Highway 41.

Showers will continue to develop and expand in coverage through the midday and early afternoon hours, mostly targeting the urban corridor of Charlotte, Lee, and Collier County.

By the mid afternoon, the rain will begin to favor inland areas as the sea breeze advances farther east. While the door will still be wide open for isolated downpours later in the afternoon for urban Southwest Florida, the shower activity will be more widespread over the interior.

Like yesterday, the rain could be very heavy at times, and we'll also see the potential for lots of lightning and gusty winds in some of the stronger cells.

Outside of the rain, most of us will notice more clouds than sun, but some sunnier spells will be possible through the day as well.

Our temperatures will stay in the 70s and 80s through the morning, and most of us won't get beyond 90 degrees.

While much of the rain will diminish by sunset, a few stragglers will linger through the first part of the night. Otherwise, our sky will stay mostly to partly cloudy with temperatures cooling into the mid 70s.

Rain chances will start to take a dip Wednesday as the rain becomes more isolated and focused deeper inland.

By Thursday, our rain chances will fall even more as a much drier air mass settles over Southwest Florida. The result will be more sun along with some very toasty temperatures. Afternoon high temperatures will likely peak in the mid to upper 90s, and our "feels like" temperature will be over 100 degrees.

It still look like the heat will back off a little by the upcoming weekend as we get into a more typical weather pattern for July; afternoon temperatures will range from the low to mid 90s, and rain chances will bump up to near 40%. Return to index of stories...

PEOPLE VISITING LONDON FOR THE OLYMPICS WILL NEED TO KEEP AN UMBRELLA HANDY!

THIS HAS BEEN THE WETTEST SUMMER IN BRITAIN IN MORE THAN A CENTURY.

BUT THE CITY IS READY TO HOST the GAMES - RAIN OR SHINE!

STEPHANIE GOSK REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

OLYMPIC WEATHER-PKG

As olympics organizers busily handle the flood of teams and athletes pouring into the country in the coming days, there has been a lot of hand-wringing over an element of these games that can't be controlled: the weather. On the defensive, London's mayor pointed out a statistic that seems hardly believable.

"It rains more in Rome than it does in London, that's the key statistic. It does. Let me tell you, I can give you the official meteorological statistics; it is officially not raining in London 94 percent of the time."

To be British is to plan for bad weather, but even this country is surprised by how bad this summer has been.

In recent weeks the torch has made its tour around the country despite driving rain, wind and cold but fingers are crossed that bad weather could break by opening ceremonies in just 10 days.

The bookies are taking rain bets on just about every event.odds are two to one the men's 100m will be a wash out.

The world record holding Chinese hurdler Liu xiang actually left london in search of drier weather in Germany.

But ultimately, the athletes will have to suffer through whatever mother nature dishes out.

"It's always pretty pointless apologizing for the British weather, isn't it? It's a fact of life over here. No, top class sportsmen in any sport know that they have to compete in all conditions."

"So bring the brollies and the wellies. it is London after all. Stephanie Gosk, NBC News, London." Return to index of stories...

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS --

SCHOOL IS OUT, AND, WHILE OTHER TEENAGERS MAY PLAY A LITTLE PING PONG THIS SUMMER, 16-YEAR-OLD ARIEL HSING HAS A MUCH DIFFERENT SUMMER VACATION PLANNED.

SHE'S GOING TO THE OLYMPICS.

HSING WILL REPRESENT THE U-S IN WOMEN'S TABLE TENNIS IN LONDON -- HER FIRST ATTEMPT AT OLYMPIC GLORY.

"When I made the Olympic team, I just felt so lucky. Going to the Olympics is about representing your country. It's about the flag that you know, you're holding up. So, when I go to the Olympics, I'm going to fight for every single point. I am going to try until the very, very end, because I want to bring home a medal for my country."

ARIEL STARTED PLAYING TABLE TENNIS AT AGE SEVEN, AND EARLY ON IN HER CAREER, SHE GAINED A PRETTY NOTABLE FAN -- WARREN BUFFETT.

"I met Uncle Warren when I was nine years old. It was his 75th birthday party and, as a gift, one of his friends decided to give him a table tennis lesson from a local coach. And the local coach thought it would be funny if there was just this little girl that came and also played, and that little girl just happened to be me. He's just been really nice, been so supportive, and he's given me a lot of advice."

ARIEL'S JOURNEY TO LONDON HASN'T BEEN WITHOUT SACRIFICE.

A JUNIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL, EVERY DAY SHE WAKES UP AT SEVEN A-M TO PRACTICE BEFORE SCHOOL.

AFTER MORNING CLASSES, HER DAD PICKS HER UP FOR LUNCH AND A NAP IN THE CAR ON THE WAY TO ANOTHER ROUND OF PRACTICE.

TWO SESSIONS, EACH TWO TO THREE HOURS.

FINALLY RETURNING HOME FOR DINNER AND, OF COURSE, HOMEWORK BEFORE BED.

"I really do try to balance my academics and table tennis because, in the U.S., it's really hard to become a professional player and make a living out of it."

"Well, I want to go Stanford University because that's always been my dream."

: "EVEN WITH ALL OF THE ADDED RESPONSIBILITY AND PRESSURE, ARIEL IS STILL A 16-YEAR-OLD AT HEART, SO SHE'S GOT SOME TEENAGE-STYLE EXPECTATIONS OF HER FIRST OLYMPICS."

"I'm really excited to be able to stay in the Olympic Village with so many other athletes. I really want to meet Michael Phelps and get a picture with him. I think that'd be amazing." Return to index of stories...

"Fans have been pretty good so far."

NASH LATER TWEETED OUT THE VIDEO, SAYING THANKS FOR THE WARM WELCOME, THOUGH WE'RE HOPING THE CAN OF KEYSTONE LIGHT WAS COLD. THE ROWDY FANS OPENED THEIR OWN TWITTER ACCOUNT CALLING THEMSELVES 'LA BEER BROS.' AND THEY POSTED VIDEO OF THE VIEW FROM THEIR SUV AND THE CELEBRATION FOLLOWING THE HAND-OFF.

THE LA BEER BROS TWEETED THAT THEY WERE 'ON THE WAY TO THE DODGERS GAME, GUY IN BACK SAYS 'THAT'S STEVE NASH".SLOWED DOWN TO CHECK.SURE ENOUGH!'

"ONE GUY POSTED ON YOUTUBE THAT THE VIDEO WOULD BE A GREAT COMMERCIAL.'KEYSTONE LIGHT, GOOD ENOUGH TO MAKE STEVE NASH OPEN HIS WINDOW.'"

BUT THE MAKERS OF KEYSTONE LIGHT SEEMED TO DISTANCE THEMSELVES, TELLING CNN WE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS VIDEO. SOME ONLINE DISTANCED THEMSELVES FROM KEYSTONE LIGHT, NOT EXACTLY A PREMIUM BEER. NASH SHOULD HAVE REALIZED IT WAS A KEYSTONE AND THROWN IT BACK POSTED ONE. OF COURSE THERE COULD HAVE BEEN MORE RAZZLE DAZZLE.

"Hey, pass me a beer."

LIKE THE TWO GUYS WHO MADE AN ENTERTAINING VIDEO CATAPULTING A BEER, KICKING A BEER, SKATEBOARDING A BEER, AND BOUNCING ONE. BUT MERELY PASSING A BEER BETWEEN CARS WHIZZING ALONG THE FREEWAY IS ALREADY UNSAFE AND ILLEGAL. THOUGH SO FAR, THERE HAVE BEEN NO CHARGES.

"WE HAVEN'T SEEN A PRODUCT HAND-OFF LIKE THIS.SINCE GREY POUPON."

"Pardon me, would you have any Grey Poupon?"

"But of course."

"This is the same bear."

THIS IS VIDEO FROM BACK ON APRIL 10-TH, SHOT HIGH ABOVE FROM K-T-L-A'S SKY5 CHOPPER.

IF YOU RECOGNIZE IT, IT'S PROBABLY BECAUSE THIS VIDEO HAS GONE VIRAL ON YOUTUBE.

WATCH HERE ON THE UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE SCREEN, A MAN TEXTING NOT KNOWING A 500-POUND BEAR IS STARING HIM IN THE FACE.

IT WAS AFTER THIS VIDEO SURFACED, SO DID A CATCHY NICKNAME FOR THE BEAR.

"We didn't know it was the one they were talking about, what is it Meatball? Yeah, they told me it was Meatball."

"It's not uncommon, the bears are going to look for food and water and familiar surroundings and that led him down back here." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

WATERBEDS FOR COWS-PKG

"shhhh"

A FAMILY RUN BUSINESS FOR THREE GENERATIONS.

"come on girls."

NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED HERE AT VAN LOON DAIRY FOR 42 YEARS

"my grandpa moved up from CA and started it."

nats

mooo

THAT'S UNTIL GRANDSON *BEN VAN LOON AND HIS BROTHER JEREMY HEARD ABOUT A UNIQUE IDEA FROM WISCONSIN.

"In January we installed one section of these waterbeds."

YES--YOU HEARD HIM RIGHT-- WATERBEDS.

"You see how you're just constantly floating."

"There's 14 gallons in each."

"As the cow gets ready to lie down water moves to the front bag where her knees will come first therefore cushion it more."

THE VAN LOONS BOUGHT MORE THAN A 100 OF THESE BEDS TO TEST THEM OUT.

"The positives are just phenomenal."

"It looks pure like a dust."

THIS GRASSY BYPRODUCT IS WHAT FARMERS HAVE BEEN USING FOR YEARS TO FILL THE STALLS.

"Those stalls over the week get holes because they kick out that stuff."

PLUS--FARMERS SAY THE WATERBEDS ARE MORE SANITARY.

"bacteria doesn't really grow on any rubber."

AND BACTERIA CAN TAKE A COW OFF THE LINE. COSTING THE FARMER THOUSANDS.

IT SEEMS THOSE COWS SLEEPING ON WATERBEDS SEEM TO HAVE FEWER CASES OF BACTERIA.

"This side one case in six months and maybe six or seven on that side."

nats

THAT PROMPTED THE VAN LOONS TO BUY ANOTHER 200 BEDS.

6:33 scoot over about that much

FOR THE REST OF THEIR COWS.AT A COST OF 100-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

A SMALL PRICE TO PAY.

"We definitely like our milk."

FOR HEALTHIER. HAPPIER COWS. Return to index of stories...
