MIXED NEWS OUT OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL TONIGHT.
AT LEAST ONE AIRLINE IS ADDING MORE NON-STOP FLIGHTS.
BUT THE AIRPORT'S CREDIT RATING IS IN DANGER BECAUSE THEY'RE SEEING LESS TRAVELERS OVERALL.
NBC-2'S CLIFTON FRENCH REPORTS ON WHAT ALL OF THIS NEWS MEANS FOR THE AIRPORT--AND PASSENGERS.
Return to index of stories...
Typically in business. It comes down to supply and demand.
And at RSW. At least on airline, is answering the demand for more direct flights.
Marge Rubash and Arland Rubash 55:54-58 "It's very exciting, it makes it easier for us to go back and forth more often."
Spirit Air added seasonal direct flights to dallas fort worth, boston, and minneapolis st paul.
Because the airline saw the potential to fill more seats.
SOT 43:36-46 "In an industry that is facing a lot of talk about consolidation and reduction in capacity we're looking forward to putting some of that capacity back in, in markets that really have the demand for it."
But overall demand at RSW has been down.
So far this year the airport has seen about 6 percent fewer travelers.
Because of that, the credit rating firm, Fitch Ratings has put out a warning. that the airport could be dropped from its A rating.
So what does that mean?
According to analyists with the firm, the airport would be a higher risk investment and would have to pay more to borrow money.
But in the airport, passengers shouldn't see much of an effect.
And the addition of new flights will hopefully, help to get more people through this building.
56:43-45 "We're thrilled to have more options."

AFTER THE SHOOTING, THE GUNMAN WALKED BACK DOWN THE STREET, THE SAME WAY HE ARRIVED.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
MORE SHOWERS TOMORROW
Hang in there! It's been a very wet few days in southwest Florida and it looks like we have more showers tonight and tomorrow morning to track. Rain totals at Page Field are now over 8.00" for the month of July and this puts at a surplus of over 3.00" this month! In fact, for the year we are now just about 'caught up' for rain. If the Page Field airport receives more that.75" tonight and tomorrow our yearly rainfall average will start to go above normal.
The forecast this evening does call for more showers to move in from the Gulf and for downpours and thunderstorms to develop inland. I expect some areas will continue to see on/off showers through midnight. An area of low pressure in the northern part of the state continues an onshore flow in southwest Florida and we will track more rain, at times, through tomorrow.
After tomorrow the weather looks to change noticeable. High pressure in the Atlantic will build across the state and basically cut off the flow of moisture. On Thursday and Friday I expect skies to be mostly sunny and temperatures to rebound in to the mid 90's with heat index readings above 100 degrees. We will trade off the rainy weather for hot weather and by the weekend there will be a few more afternoon storms to track.
