FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Look like we are in for a few mainly dry, but hot, days. The low pressure area in northern Florida continues to drift farther north and will keep southwest winds over the area for the rest of today and tonight. This will lead to some isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and evening - mainly inland and east of the interstate. Temperatures will continue to be muggy and mild this evening with a low in the 70's tomorrow morning.
Computer models continue to show an area of high pressure in the Atlantic building over Florida on Thursday and Friday. This weather pattern looks to set up some very hot days for us and my forecast calls for 95 to 96 degrees both days. There will still be sufficient humidity to bring our heat index over 100 degrees both days. Afternoon thunderstorms will take a break for a few days but despite the outlook for mainly dry weather, I think there could be an isolated storm developing on Friday.
For forward planning this weekend … expect hot and humid days with a few storms on Saturday and better coverage of afternoon storms on Sunday.

SUGARY, GUMMY CANDIES THAT STICK BETWEEN THE TEETH. IF YOUR CHILD DOESN'T FLOSS OFTEN ENOUGH, THE CANDY STAYS AND THE TEETH ROT.

From its iconic wave-like roof to its majestic swimming pools, the London Aquatics Center is a feat of design and engineering.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics, this venue will not only showcase the top swimmers in the world, it will also feature one of the most technologically advanced pools ever built, something competitive swimmers call a fast pool.
MISSY FRANKLIN
You can kind of learn as you go along and you go to all these different pools, what you like and what you don't like.
What elite swimmers like Missy Franklin don't like is water turbulence created by waves.
MISSY FRANKLIN
When there's a lot of swimmers in the water, even at practice, if we have a lot of kids in one lane, it's almost impossible to really go fast.
To minimize the amount of waves in the Olympic pools at the London Aquatics Center, engineers have used a combination of advanced technology and design, especially along the sides and at the bottom.
ANETTE HOSOI, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Pools are designed in such a way to minimize waves, to dissipate energy. You see engineering everywhere when you build these pools.
At the Aquatics Center, the bottom of the pools can be adjusted to different depths.
Along the sides and ends of the main competition pool, engineers have lined it with a special trough designed to swallow waves, preventing them - and their energy - from rebounding back into a swimmer's lane.
In addition, high-tech lane lines stretching the entire 50 meters of the pool are engineered to quell waves by decreasing their energy before they travel into another swimmer's lane.
ANETTE HOSOI, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
When the wave hits the lane line, it's allowed to spin, and so that energy goes into turning the lane line rather than propagating the wave.
With its state of the art design, advanced technology, and engineering, the London Aquatics Center will dazzle fans from around the world and create the optimal fast pool for swimmers at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

DOCTORS HAVE LONG SEARCHED FOR A RELIABLE SCREENING TEST, IN PARTICULAR FOR HIGH RISK GROUPS INCLUDING SMOKERS OVER THE AGE OF 55, THOSE WITH A HISTORY OF SECOND HAND SMOKE EXPOSURE AND ANYONE WITH OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE TO INHALED CHEMICALS. MANY DOCTORS USED CHEST XRAYS TO LOOK FOR EARLY TUMORS.

Instead of giving up, researchers looked deeper into more advanced xray technology to find something more reliable that might save lives.

RUNS:
2:44 There's a better alternative now. There's something called a Low Dose Computerized Tomography, or low dose CAT scan, which basically looks at the lungs and the chest in a way that gives much more information than on a regular x-ray.
A LOW DOSE, SPIRAL CT SCAN GENERATES A 3D IMAGE IN A MATTER OF SECONDS WHILE KEEPING RADIATION EXPOSURE TO A MINIMUM. IT IS MORE SUCCESSFUL AT FINDING LESIONS. STUDIES FIND IT BETTER THAN STANDARD XRAYS.

2:44 They could actually compare to plain x-rays decrease risk of mortality of lung cancer by 20 percent. Which is a significant number.
SIXTY PERCENT OF LUNG CANCERS ARE CURRENTLY PICKED UP IN LATE STAGES. SOMETHING WITH THE POTENTIAL TO FIND CANCER EARLY, COULD BE THE GAME CHANGER DOCTORS ARE LOOKING FOR. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER.

Nat: "a skywest plane.crashed into the parking lot around a bunch of vehicles."
The Skywest commuter jet.
A popular plane used for short routes.
was hoisted out of the airport parking lot Tuesday.
Inside. police discovered the body of murder suspect. And Skywest pilot - Brian Hedglin.
Sot: "deceased in the plane from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound"
Police say Hedglin arrived at Utah's St. George airport overnight Monday.
Detectives believe he used a rug to scale a barbed wire fence.
Then walked up to the Sky West Jet parked at the gate - a CRJ 200 - that seats 50.
Hedglin pushed open - the always unlocked - cockpit door.
Fired up the engines.
And began to taxi away from the terminal.
Sot: "At that time his left wing on the aircraft clipped the jetbridge probably making it non-operable."
Hedglin didn't get far.
The pilot tore thru the terminal wall.
the airports security fence.
And rammed the plane into several cars.
"He would have been able to take off the plane from the runway and got airborne, hence in this particular situation, it's very good that he clipped the wing."
Police say Hedglin was a fugitive on the run.
Friday the suspects girlfriend - 39 year old Christina Cornejo - was found dead inside her Colorado Springs home.
Shortly before the murder.
Hedglin was arrested for harassing Cornejo.
Out of jail on a 10 thousand dollar bond.
Hedglins was named the prime suspect.
"They had some suspicions that he may flee the area/ this included SkyWest to say that 'We do know that he is a pilot with you; you may want to deactivate his access card,' which they did."
With a home in Colorado.
Detectives don't know why Hedglin fled to this small airport in Utah 700 miles away.
A commercial airline pilot turned murder suspect who was on the run. but who never made it off the runway.
