A REACTION FROM TRAYVON'S MARTIN'S FAMILY.
JAY GRAY LOOKS AT BOTH SIDES THIS AFTERNOON.
Return to index of stories...
AFTER LISTENING TO GEORGE ZIMMERMAN'S EXPLANATION OF THE NIGHT THEIR TEENAGED SON WAS KILLED. DURING HIS FIRST MEDIA INTERVIEW ON FOX NEWS CHANNEL'S HANNITY SHOW.
"I'm not a racist and I'm not a murderer."
TODAY, TRAYVON MARTIN'S PARENTS SAY THEY ARE SPEAKING OUT. FOR THEIR SON. WHO CAN'T.
"He had no regards for Trayvon's life, he had no regrets for taking Trayvon's life."
DURING HIS INTERVIEW. ZIMMERMAN DID SAY HE WISHED HE COULD CHANGE THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THAT DEADLY NIGHT.
"I do wish that there was something, anything I could have done that wouldn't have put me in a position where I had to take his life."
HE SAID THE UNARMED 17-YEAR-OLD INITIATED THE CONFRONTATION. PUNCHING HIM. THREATENING HIS LIFE. AND ULTIMATELY WRESTLING FOR THE GUN ZIMMERMAN HAD STRAPPED TO HIS WAIST.
"At that point I realized it wasn't my gun, wasn't his gun. it was the gun."
"Those are George Zimmerman's words. George Zimmerman said they were fighting over the gun. George Zimmerman is here to tell his side of the story Trayvon is dead."
ZIMMERMAN REPEATEDLY SAID HE WAS "SORRY" FOR THE LOSS OF THEIR CHILD.
AND HE APOLOGIZED FOR THE CONTROVERSY THAT HAS FOLLOWED THE SHOOTING.
BUT HE ALSO INSISTED THERE WAS NOTHING HE WOULD HAVE OR COULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY THE NIGHT MARTIN WAS KILLED.
"I feel that it was all God's plan and for me to second guess it or judge it um.shakes his head
MARTIN'S MOTHER CALLED THE RESPONSE -QUOTE- "RIDICULOUS".
"I don't believe it's God's plan for him to kill an innocent teenager."
AND ZIMMERMAN'S PARENTS SAY THEIR PLAN HASN'T CHANGED. THEY WILL CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR WHAT THEY CALL "JUSTICE" FOR TRAYVON.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
After a wet start to the week, our weather pattern is drying out and heating up.
The upper level low that brought us the soggy rains continues to weaken across the southeast states today with the rain focused across central and north Florida. Skies will start off mostly clear with most locations in the middle and upper 70s.
The tropical airmass that has been entrenched across the area will be replaced by dry high pressure building in from the Atlantic along with Saharan dust. This will bring hot, hazy, and humid conditions to Southwest Florida for Thursday and Friday, while keeping rain chances to a minimum. With the seabreeze making its way in this afternoon, a stray afternoon/evening shower is possible otherwise the vast majority of the area will stay dry. Temperatures will soar into the mid 90s with heat index values in the 101°-105° range.
Moisture will return for the weekend, bringing our typical rainy season pattern back with dry mornings and afternoon storms.

THE THOUGHT OF GOING BACK-TO-SCHOOL IS A DOWNER FOR MOST KIDS ON SUMMER BREAK. FOR RETAILERS, HOWEVER, THINGS ARE LOOKING UP.
THE NATIONAL RETAIL FEDERATION'S ANNUAL SURVEY OF BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOPPERS FINDS THE AVERAGE PERSON WITH SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WILL SPEND $688.62, UP ABOUT 85 DOLLARS FROM LAST YEAR, FOR A TOTAL OF MORE THAN 30 BILLION DOLLARS IN RETAIL SALES.
When you think about how much people are spending, a lot of them have tried to make do with what they had over the last several years and they want to make sure that their kids have everything they need to go back to school.
THE BULK OF BACK-TO-SCHOOL MONEY WILL BE SPENT ON CLOTHING -- ABOUT 246 DOLLARS, FOLLOWED BY ELECTRONICS, 217.
SHOES, JUST OVER 129.
AND ABOUT 95 DOLLARS ON SUPPLIES.
RETAILERS HOPE A ROBUST BACK-TO-SCHOOL SEASON CAN SNAP A THREE-MONTH STREAK OF DECLINES IN SALES, AS CONSUMERS REMAIN CAUTIOUS.
HALF OF THOSE SURVEYED SAID THEY'LL BE SEEKING DISCOUNTS. RETAILERS SAY THEY'LL FIND PLENTY IN-STORE AND ONLINE.
STILL, BACK-TO-SCHOOL AND BACK-TO-CAMPUS SHOPPERS ARE EXPECTED TO SPEND A COMBINED 83-POINT-EIGHT BILLION DOLLARS THIS YEAR, A BUYING SEASON RETAILERS SAY RANKS SECOND ONLY TO THE WINTER HOLIDAYS.

THE WRONG WAY CAR HIT A FORD EXPEDITION.
"Stay in the car."
"Stay in the car."
AL FANNING OPENED THE DOOR OF THE EXPEDITION AND TWO FEMALE OCCUPANTS WALKED OUT BASICALLY UNHURT.
"We sat there in the ditch together."
THE DRIVER OF THE WRONG WAY CAR, 58-YEAR OLD EDWARD FAIRLEY, SUFFERED A BROKEN SHOULDER AND OTHER NON-LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. FANNING SAYS POLICE BELIEVE A MEDICAL CONDITION MAY HAVE CAUSED HIS WILD DRIVING. FANNING HIMSELF HAS BEEN CHEERED FOR HELPING AND NOT JUST RECORDING. THOUGH RECORDING WHILE DRIVING GOT FANNING A SCOLDING.
"Because he's not focused on the roadway himself. "

AND IF YOU NEED A NEW CARD.
IT MIGHT BE A GOOD PLACE TO START YOUR SEARCH.
BUT THERE ARE LIMITS.
BOB HANSEN REPORTS.
Return to index of stories...
WHEN IT COMES TO OUR CREDIT CARDS, WE ARE OFTEN SLOW TO CHANGE.
"I kind of just stick to one credit card."
"Once every 20 years, had the same credit card for many years."
BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY WITH OUR CARDS. IN FACT THE FEDERAL CONSUMER FINANCIAL PROTECTION BUREAU JUST A LAUNCHED A WEBSITE THAT TRACKS COMPLAINTS AGAINST THE COUNTRY'S LARGEST BANKS AND THEIR CREDIT CARDS.
"Where you can actually go in as a consumer into the database and see the complains that have been filed by other credit card users."
THE CONSUMER COMPLAINT DATABASE BREAKS DOWN THE ENTRIES BY BANK, BY CATEGORIES, BY ZIP CODE AND MORE. THERE'S NO PERSONAL NAMES USED. AND ONLY ONE LINE IF IT'S BEEN RESOLVED OR NOT. THIS IS BY NO MEANS A COMPLETE REPORT.
"It is some information but users need to understand that it's not a full picture of the credit card industry."
NEVER-THE-LESS, SAN DIEGO STATE FINANCIAL PROFESSOR DAVID ELY SAYS IT COULD ENCOURAGE BIG BANKS TO RESOLVE MORE CONSUMER COMPLAINTS.
"No issuer wants to be identified as the institution that has the most complaints filed against it."
"While it's important to read those complaints, it may not be the first thing you want to look at if you're considering changing credit cards."
"I think i would definitely check out the benefits. I know some credit cards have cash back."
"One that has good security, internet security."
"Umm, the interest rate."
AND NONE OF THAT INFORMATION IS IN THE DATABASE. IT DOES SHOW THAT THE #1 CONSUMER COMPLAINT IS BILLING DISPUTES FOLLOW BY INTEREST RATES, ACCOUNT CANCELATIONS AND CREDIT REPORTS.
WHILE IT'S CREDIT CARDS NOW. THE DATABASE COULD EXPAND TO INCLUDE COMPLAINTS ABOUT MORTGAGES AND OTHER FINANCIAL PRODUCTS.

Temperatures will soar into the mid 90s with heat index values in the 101°-105° range.
Moisture will return for the weekend, bringing our typical rainy season pattern back with dry mornings and afternoon storms.

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS --
THE GROUP OF GUYS WOKE UP EARLY, SPEARFISHING 12 MILES OUT.
ONE OF THEM JUMPS IN, AND THE FIRST THING HE SEES IS A SHARK STARING BACK AT HIM.
WE TALKED TO STEVE MALDONADO ON THE PHONE FROM HIS HOME ON THE SPACE COAST.
"And as he was getting out, I mean, you could see the fin behind him, following him back to the boat."
IT WAS THE SCARE OF A LIFETIME.
EVERYONE JUMPS BACK, SAFE ON THE BOAT.
"We were all kind of screaming and hollering and."
"Just kind of in unbelief."
AND THERE -- IN THE WATER BELOW -- IS WHAT APPEARS TO BE A GREAT WHITE SHARK.
"The shark kept circling several times around the boat. I could see the silhouette clearly. I mean, the water was crystal clear."
THEY COULDN'T BE CERTAIN.
MAYBE IT WAS A TIGER SHARK WITH NO STRIPES.
MAYBE JUST A GIANT BULL SHARK.
"We kind of wanted to get him real close to the boat, so we could get a good video of him."
"So, when they finally arrived back on land, they got to the nearest computer. They uploaded the video, and singled out these still frames of the shark. And from the looks of it, almost definitely a great white."
"I think he was curious to want to know how somebody tasted."
LUCKILY, THE SHARK DIDN'T BITE.
BUT IT FOLLOWED THEM FOR 20 MINUTES.
JUST A FEW MILES OFF THE COAST OF FORT PIERCE, ONE OF THE MOST FEARED PREDATORS, POSING FOR THE PICTURE OF A LIFETIME.
"Just a reminder to all the divers and swimmers and people that are in the water, they are out there. So just try to be aware of your surroundings and have a healthy respect for the ocean."

FINALLY THIS AFTERNOON.
HANDS OFF THE HOFF!
ICED COFFEE ADS OF DAVID HASSELHOFF ARE DISAPPEARING FROM CONVENIENCE STORES ACROSS NEW ENGLAND.
RYAN SCHULTEIS FINDS OUT WHY.
Return to index of stories...
His face is everywhere trying to tempt you to buy a refreshing iced coffee.
But coffee isn't the hot item here -- it's the ads themselves, with his picture on them.
They're being stolen from stores all over New England.
"One of my friends whose nickname at school is Hasselhoff so we saw this sign and my roommate took it for him. It's in her house right now when we got back to school it will be in my friend's room."
"The signs are so popular, they have stores keep a close eye on them so they don't walk out the door."
"I've never had anyone steal any but it doesn't surprise me."
One store in Braintree hasn't had any stolen yet but that doesn't mean people don't want get their hands on the Hoff.
"It's crazy. They keep offering. They come in -- we probably get customers probably every night asking to buy the Hasselhoff poster."
Reporter: "Why do you think people want those posters so bad?"
"I don't know, man. I don't know. It's just like Germany, the Hasselhoff thing is really hot I guess. I don't know."
Cumberland Farms said, "Although we are flattered our customers have become attached to our iced coffee ads, we do not encourage theft. The Hoff is there for all to enjoy."
They also said they don't know how many ads have been stolen but they keep getting calls from stores for replacements.
Here in Somerville, they're just waiting for the Hoff to take off.
"It ain't gonna last by the night, but it's still there."
