FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
We're in store for another hot, humid, and hazy day across Southwest Florida.
After highs in the mid 90s yesterday, there's been no relief from the heat as overnight lows have remained close to 80°. We'll start the day off with ample sunshine and warm temperatures. Dry high pressure will continue to dominate our weather pattern today, keeping our atmosphere dry and stable. This will keep our rain chances today on the slim side with the opportunity for only a stray shower or two to develop during the afternoon and evening hours. Otherwise, the vast majority of us will stay hot and dry with hazy sunshine due to African dust.
Highs today will easily climb into the middle 90s with heat index values in the low 100s.
Tonight, our skies will stay mostly clear with lows in the upper 70s.
By Saturday, the African dust should start to thin out, as a bit more moisture makes its way into the area. This will give us a slight uptick in our rain prospects with mainly afternoon showers and storms. Sunday looks to be the wetter day as a tropical wave moves closer. This will give us a better coverage of showers and storms during the day.
This will be a brief return to our typical rainy season pattern, before some drier and hotter weather returns by the middle of next week.

For the past four years, Bryan Clay has held the title: 'World's Greatest Athlete.'
It's an award bestowed upon the Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon.
While Clay ultimately failed to qualify for the 2012 Games in London, he used advanced technology to prepare for the long jump.
MELVIN RAMEY, USA Track & Field
When a person jumps to try to go far, they are becoming a projectile.
The mechanics of projectile motion are critical to Clay's performance in the long jump.
Clay's velocity has two components: horizontal velocity, his sprinting speed, represented by 'X'; and vertical velocity, his lift-off speed, represented by 'Y'.
By measuring Clay's horizontal and vertical velocities, it's possible to find a crucial element of the jump - the take-off angle - which will ultimately determine the length of the jump.
As part of a sponsorship package with the U.S. Olympic Committee, BMW is lending its engineering expertise by adapting a cutting-edge stereoscopic camera system to measure Clay's jump.
PHIL CHEETHAM, USOC
It actually has two lenses and so it can triangulate everything that it sees in the field of view. They've made it recognize a template and that template happens to be a white baseball hat.
The stereoscopic camera tracks the white cap on Clay's head, the most stable part of the body in motion, and takes pictures 60 times per second to calculate his horizontal and vertical velocities at take-off.
MELVIN RAMEY, USA Track & Field
While the athlete is in the air, we have already captured those velocities. So the advantage that we have now is that the coach can come and look at the performance immediately.
BRYAN CLAY
Now you can find the optimal take off angle.
Vital information for decathletes like Clay who train and push themselves on the track six or seven hours a day.

LOSING A PIECE OF JEWELRY CAN BE UPSETTING. EVEN WORSE, WHEN IT'S AN ENGAGEMENT RING WHICH ENDS UP AT THE BOTTOM OF LAKE ERIE.
MELISSA HOLMES HAS THE STORY OF A REAL-LIFE TREASURE HUNT.
Return to index of stories...
"Just losing that ring off my finger, I felt. not complete."
IN THE DARK AND MURKY WATERS OF LAKE ERIE IN ANGOLA, SOMEWHERE WAS SAMANTHA PECKENS' ONE-CARAT, PRINCESS CUT
DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING.
THE RING SLIPPED OFF SUNDAY WHEN SHE WAS PLAYING FOOTBALL IN THE WATER WITH HER FIANCEE ADAM AND FRIENDS.
"I screamed, "my ring fell off' to everybody, and everyone just instantly started looking. And, you know, he's telling me calm down, you know, no one got hurt, this and that as I'm sobbing."
ADAM WAS THERE TO CONSOLE SAM, AS HE'S ALWAYS BEEN.
THE TWO HAVE BEEN TOGETHER 15 YEARS, SINCE SAM WAS JUST 12.
AND THAT'S WHY THIS RING JUST CAN'T BE REPLACED.
"We went through so much together as kids, and growing up together, and. it was everything to me. It never came off my finger. And when it did, especially in the water, it just broke my heart. Absolutely broke my heart."
AS MANY AS 30 PEOPLE SEARCHED THAT FIRST DAY AND FOUND NOTHING.
ENTER DREW SUPON.
"I do a little treasure hunting on my own."
AND HE HEARD ABOUT HIS FRIEND'S SEARCH AND KNEW HIS UNDERWATER METAL DETECTOR WOULD COME IN HANDY.
"Picking up a lot of trash and bottle caps and pop tops. You'd be amazed how much junk is out there."
BUT IT WAS THE END OF DAY TWO NOW, AND STILL NO RING.
"We were starting to give up."
"We were finding it. I just. had a really good feeling about it."
BACK IN THE WATER ON DAY THREE, DREW SAID HE JUST HAD A FEELING ABOUT ONE SPOT.
"I just decided to slide my hand into the sand and raise it up, and it was so dark. And once it settled, the sun hit it at the right angle,
and what I thought was another Pepsi pull tab was Sam's ring in my hand."
JAWS HIT THE BOTTOM OF THE FLOOR OF LAKE ERIE, AND DREW HANDED THE RING OVER TO SAM'S FIANCEE.
"And Adam, my fiancee, he had come up to me and said, 'did you find the ring yet?' I was like, 'no, I didn't find it yet.' And he had it in his hands like that, and I started flipping out. Oh my god, oh my god. I started crying. It was like he proposed to me again, all over again."
ONCE JUST AN ACQUAINTANCE, DREW MIGHT NOW BE AN HONORARY BEST MAN AT THE WEDDING.
"I keep on saying he's my hero."
"Three, four feet of water. Five inches of sand. It was basically a needle in a haystack, so I'm pretty amazed that we found it."
EVERY TIME SAM LOOKS DOWN NOW AND SEES THAT RING ON HER FINGER, SHE KNOWS IT'S FATE.
"If you lose it and it comes back, it's meant to be. And that's exactly how I feel about this. I just. I don't know, I feel like it's good fortune for the rest of our relationship."
