GOOD MORNING-1SHOT

GOOD MORNING-

IT'S SATURDAY JULY 21ST-

I'M KELLY CRESWELL-

WE HAVE A LOT OF NEWS TO GET TO THIS MORNING, INCLUDING THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MASS SHOOTING IN COLORADO.

BUT FIRST, WE WANT TO GET A QUICK CHECK ON THE WEATHER THIS MORNING WITH METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX CNTR

"Rain chances return for the weekend"

After a couple days of high heat and low rain chances, moisture is now starting to build back over Southwest Florida, leading to a better coverage of afternoon storms this weekend.

Despite the increasing storm chances, though, we'll still enjoy abundant sunshine all over Southwest Florida through the morning and for most of the afternoon. With all the sunshine around today, temperatures will be quite hot again with afternoon highs expected to spike into the mid 90s, placing the "feels like" temperatures between 100 and 110 degrees.

Beyond 3pm, all of us will be fair game for a pop up shower or storm. The storms will be isolated and hit or miss in nature with the rain hitting about 30-40% of the area.

Rain chances will get another boost on Sunday as moisture from the tropics settles over South Florida. We might also notice an earlier start to the rain Sunday, so instead of holding off until 3-4pm, the rain may start developing as early as 1-2 pm. Rain chances go up to 60% Sunday.

The good thing about the extra rain is it will help keep our temperatures lower Sunday as well as early next week. Look for highs in the lower 90s from Sunday into early next week.

Higher than normal rain chances will continue through Monday before another batch of dry air moves in Tuesday and Wednesday, reducing our rain chances down to the 20-30% range. Return to index of stories...

THEATER SHOOTING LATEST-CLIP-HALF SCRN

WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ALL NIGHT TO TRACK THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE SHOOTING IN AURORA-

HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW-

OVERNIGHT, POLICE IN AURORA HAVE STARTED MEETING WITH THE FAMILIES OF THOSE KILLED IN THE SHOOTING AT THE THEATER-

POLICE SAY, 12 PEOPLE WERE KILLED EARLY FRIDAY MORNING WHEN 24 YEAR OLD JAMES HOLMES OPENED FIRE IN THE MOVIE THEATER.

11 PEOPLE ARE STILL IN CRITICAL CONDITION AT AREA HOSPITALS.

POLICE NOW SAY THEY ARE GOING TO WAIT UNTIL THIS MORNING TO TRY AND GET INTO HOLMES' APARTMENT.

THAT'S BECAUSE OF BOOBY TRAPS SET IN THE APARTMENT.

THE AURORA POLICE CHEIF SAYS PHOTOS OF THE APARTMENT APPEARED TO SHOW TRIP WIRES, JARS FULL OF AMMUNITION AND LIQUID, AS WELL AS OTHER ITEMS.

NBC2 HAS LEARNED HOLMES WILL BE IN COURT MONDAY MORNING.

WE HAVE ALSO FOUND OUT FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT IN COLORADO THAT HOLMES IS NOT COOPERATING AND HAS ASKED FOR A LAWYER. Return to index of stories...

OBAMA REACTS TO SHOOTING-OC-SOT-OC

THIS MORNING, PRESIDENT OBAMA AND HIS STAFF WILL BE FOLLOWING THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS FROM AURORA-

THE PRESIDENT'S WEEKLY ADDRESS TODAY WILL BE ON FRIDAY MORNING'S SHOOTING.

WE STILL HAVE NOT HEARD IF PRESIDENT OBAMA WILL TRAVEL TO COLORADO TO MEET WITH THE VICTIMS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

YESTERDAY, THE PRESIDENT WAS IN FORT MYERS.

MISTER OBAMA WAS SCHEDULED FOR A CAMPAIGN RALLY, BUT INSTEAD SPOKE ON THE TRAGEDY IN A SPEECH TO THE NATION.

We will take every step possible to ensure the safety of all of our people. We're going to stand by our neighbors in Colorado during this extraordinarily difficult time. And I had a chance to speak with the mayor of Aurora, as well as the governor of Colorado to express, not just on behalf of Michelle and myself, but the entire American family, how heartbroken we are.

THE PRESIDENT ALSO SAID THAT THE NATION NEEDS TO EMBRACE THOSE WHO LOST LOVED ONES, AND LET THEM KNOW WE WILL BE HERE FOR THEM AS A NATION.

HE WAS ALSO SUPPOSED TO SPEAK IN WINTER PARK YESTERDAY, BUT CANCELLED THAT EVENT TO RETURN TO THE WHITE HOUSE. Return to index of stories...

ROMNEY REACTS-OC SOTVO

MITT ROMNEY ALSO CUT CAMPAIGN EVENTS SHORT YESTERDAY IN LIGHT OF THE SHOOTING.

SPEAKING IN NEW HAMPSHIRE, ROMNEY ONLY ADDRESSED THE TRAGEDY IN COLORADO.

"There will be justice for those responsible, but that's another matter for another day. Today is a moment to grieve and remember, to reach out and to help, to appreciate our blessings in life.".

BOTH ROMNEY AND THE PRESIDENT HAVE, FOR NOW, PULLED ALL CAMPAIGN ADS IN COLORADO. Return to index of stories...

SHOOTING VICTIM HOSPITAL-VO

AND WE ARE NOW HEARING FROM ONE OF THE PEOPLE SHOT IN THE MOVIE THEATER-

HE SAYS AT ONE POINT, HE THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO DIE.

STEPHEN BARTON AND HIS FRIEND WERE IN THE AURORA THEATER VIEWING OF "THE DARK KNIGHT RISES" JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT WHEN A GUNMAN OPENED FIRE.

BARTON WAS SHOT IN THE NECK AND KNEW THAT IF THE BULLET HAD HIT JUST A FEW MILLIMETERS ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH DIFFERENT FOR HIM. Return to index of stories...

SHOOTING VICTIM HOSPITAL-SOTVO

S/ Stephen Barton / Shooting Victim:10

"he was just unloading into the crowd. it seemed to me to be very purposeful and methodical."

BARTON AND ANOTHER SHOOTING VICTIM WERE ACTUALLY TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL IN THE BACK OF A POLICE CRUISER. Return to index of stories...

MARK KELLY, GABBY GIFFORDS REAX-OC-SOT-OC

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS NOT THE FIRST MASS SHOOTING IN RECENT YEARS-

IN JANUARY OF LAST YEAR, FORMER ARIZONA REPRESENTATIVE GABRIELLE GIFFORDS WAS SHOT IN THE HEAD DURING A POLITICAL EVENT IN TUCSON.

SIX PEOPLE WERE KILLED IN THAT SHOOTING.

GIFFORDS' HUSBAND, MARK KELLY SAYS IN SITUATIONS LIKE THIS, A STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY IS VITAL.

Well I think for the folks that were directly affected by this, the victims, the ones that were not killed, and the family members. I mean it really helps ti come together as a community. That happened in Tucson, I think these towns like Tucson tend to rise to the occasion, and I think that support really helps the people that are experiencing this.

GIFFORDS' ALLEGED SHOOTER, JARED LOUGHNER, IS AWAITING TRIAL.

SHE LEFT OFFICE EARLIER THIS YEAR TO RECUPERATE FROM HER INJURIES. Return to index of stories...

FAMILY REACTION TO SHOOTING-VO

THE SHOOTING IN COLORADO GOT US WONDERING, WHAT SHOULD YOU TELL YOUR KIDS ABOUT THE TRAGEDY?

PSYCHIATRISTS TELL US THAT PARENTS MAY BE STRUGGLING WITH HOW TO TALK TO THEIR KIDS.

SAYING THAT PARENTS SHOULD KEEP THEIR ANSWERS SIMPLE, LEAVING OUT THE DRAMATIC DETAILS.

WITH YOUNGER KIDS, PARENTS SHOULD STRESS THAT THERE IS NO NEED TO WORRY -- WE ARE SAFE.

BUT WITH OLDER KIDS PARENTS SHOULD REMIND THEM THAT SHOOTINGS ARE RARE AND TO HAVE A SAFETY ROUTINE IN PLACE.

WHAT PSYCHIATRISTS SAY IT BOILS DOWN TO IS AGE AND MATURITY LEVEL. Return to index of stories...

FAMILY REACTION TO SHOOTING-SOTVO

dr.mabel lopez/psychiatrist "just want to know is this going to happen to us or in our community and we have to reassure them we are as safe as we can be and it doesnt directly affect them." 11 sec

AS FAR AS SAFETY IS CONCERNED -- A-M-C THEATERS IN NORTH FORT MYERS SAYS IT IS STEPPING UP SECURITY -- AND WILL NOT ALLOW ANY GUESTS IN WHO ARE WEARING COSTUMES THAT MAKES OTHER GUESTS FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE.

AND THE THEATERS WON'T PERMIT FACE COVERING MASKS OR FAKE WEAPONS. Return to index of stories...

KIDS AND SUMMER-PKG

ANNA CATALINA GROSS IS A STAY-AT-HOME MOTHER OF THREE YOUNG CHILDREN.TWO OF WHOM ARE IN SCHOOL.

HER KIDS AREN'T THE ONLY ONES WHO ENJOY SUMMERTIME.

It's kind of nice to be able not to have any schedules. We're all together and i really like it.

BUT SHE HAS ONE MAIN CONCERN.

There's things like handwriting and math that you do need to do everyday to not lose um just your focus and you do kind of backtrack a little bit if its been 8 weeks, 9 weeks that you haven't done math.

ONCE KIDS HAVE GOTTEN TO ENJOY THEIR SUMMER, THIS GUIDANCE COUNSELOR SAYS KIDS NEED TO BE ENGAGED IN ACTIVITIES.

It could be sports related, arts and crafts related, or just visiting family and friends.

BUT, ALONG WITH THESE THINGS, SHE HAS THIS ADVICE FOR PARENTS:

To make sure that they are reading, reading, reading and to make sure that they are working on skills that perhaps they were a little deficient in and also um to improve upon those skills that they were really good in just to kind of keep them above the curve.

AS FOR THE FAMILY SUMMER VACATION.

The major major fun activities and vacations all that need really cease about 1 to 2 weeks before school starts. A good two weeks would be great as a rule of thumb.

AND GREAT TO KEEP YOUR KIDS ON TRACK.

WHO IS JAMES HOLMES?-CG REVEAL-ONCAM

NBC2 IS CONTINUING TO FOLLOW THE LATEST ON THE MASS SHOOTING IN AURORA COLORADO-

12 PEOPLE ARE DEAD AFTER POLICE SAY JAMES HOLMES OPENED FIRE EARLY FRIDAY MORNING INSIDE A THEATER WHERE PEOPLE WERE WATCHING A MIDNIGHT SHOWING OF THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.

MORE THAN 50 PEOPLE WERE HURT.

THE SHOOTING IS NOW CONSIDERED ONE OF THE WORST SHOOTINGS IN U-S HISTORY.

AURORA POLICE ALSO SAY HOLMES FIRED 7000 ROUNDS AND MULTIPLE MAGAZINES FROM WEAPONS HE PURCHASED ONLINE.

AND NOW POLICE SAY THEY ARE GOING TO WAIT UNTIL LATER TODAY BEFORE TRYING TO GET INTO HOLMES' APARTMENT.

THEY SAY THE THEATER SHOOTING SUSPECT BOOBY-TRAPPED THE HOME WITH TRIP WIRES AND JARS OF AMMUNITION.

MEANWHILE, DREW GRIFFIN TAKES A LOOK AT HOLMES' LIFE LEADING UP TO YESTERDAY'S MASS SHOOTING. Return to index of stories...

WHO IS JAMES HOLMES?-PKG

HE HAD BEEN LIVING NOT FAR FROM THIS MOVIE THEATER FOR THE PAST YEAR BECAUSE IT WAS ALSO CLOSE TO THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO MEDICAL SCHOOL WHERE HOLMES WAS A GRADUATE STUDENT IN NEUROSCIENCE'S.

ACCORDING TO THE SCHOOL, HE WAS, "IN THE PROCESS OF WITHDRAWING" AS A STUDENT LAST MONTH.

THE SCHOOL FRANKLY WON'T TELL US MUCH ABOUT HIS GRADES, THE CLASSES HE TOOK, OR ANYTHING ELSE.

WE DO KNOW HE GAVE A STUDENT LECTURE THIS PAST MARCH ON SOMETHING CALLED "MICRO-RNA BIOMARKERS."

IF YOU LOOK IT UP, IT'S ABOUT AN EMERGING AREA OF NEUROSCIENCE; THE STUDY OF NERVES THAT RELATES TO CANCER RESEARCH.

AND THE SCHOOL SAYS HOLMES WORKED IN A PAID POSITION THERE AS WELL.

BUT NO DETAILS.

BEFORE THAT, A MIDDLE UPPER CLASS UPBRINGING IN CALIFORNIA.

HIGH SCHOOL IN SAN DIEGO.

AN UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA IN RIVERSIDE IN 2010.

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS THERE SAID HE HAD AN OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC RECORD.

"He was an honors student, so academically he was at the top of the top. He really distinguished himself from an academic point of view in the four years with us graduating with the highest honors."

SO HOW IS IT THIS HONOR STUDENT, THIS Ph.D. CANDIDATE, THIS BUDDING NEUROSCIENTIST BECOMES A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSON, DRESSED AND ACCORDING TO POLICE ARMED TO KILL?

"The suspect was dressed all in black, he was wearing a ballistic helmet, a tactical ballistic vest, ballistic leggings, a throat protector and a groin protector and a gas mask and black tactical gloves."

WAS THE PERSON DELUSIONAL, WAS THERE MENTAL ILLNESS INVOLVED?

AS WE TRY TO PIECE THIS TOGETHER, I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU WHAT NEW YORK CITY POLICE COMMISSIONER RAY KELLY HAD RELEASED ON WHAT HE LEARNED OF THE SUSPECT THAT MAY HAVE A TIE TO THE ACTUAL MOVIE.

"We have some information, I believe most of it public, clearly he looks like a deranged individual. He had his hair painted red, he said he was "the Joker." Return to index of stories...

IT ALLOWS A SHOOTER TO FIRE CONTINUOUSLY BY HOLDING THE TRIGGER DOWN.

ALSO REPORTEDLY USED WERE A MODEL 8-70 REMINGTON 12-GAUGE SHOTGUN AND A 40-CALIBER GLOCK HANDGUN.

6:42 FIRST ALERT FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

ZIMMERMAN FOLLIES-ONCAM

BARBARA WALTERS ALMOST ALWAYS GETS THE INTERVIEW SHE WANTS.

BUT, THIS TIME AROUND -- SHE DIDN'T.

JEANNE MOOS REPORTS ON THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY. Return to index of stories...

ZIMMERMAN FOLLIES-PKG

THIS IS THE STORY OF WHAT HAPPENS WHEN BARBARA WALTERS, THE QUEEN OF "THE GET", DOES NOT GET HER MAN. AND SEAN HANNITY DOES.

It is an interview that never took place. When we come back I will tell you why. It's like a mystery. woo woo woo.

THAT WAS 6 MINUTES INTO THE VIEW. BY 12 MINUTES AFTER, BARBARA WAS EXPLAINING HOW SHE'D FLOWN DOWN TO FLORIDA WEDNESDAY TO INTERVIEW GEORGE ZIMMERMAN, AN INTERVIEW SHE THOUGHT SHE'D BEEN GUARANTEED.

Zimmerman came in. He had already taken off the suit he was wearing for the interview with Hannity. wearing a t-shirt should have been my first clue.

BARBARA SAID ZIMMERMAN REFUSED TO DO THE INTERVIEW UNLESS ABC MET ONE CONDITION, WHICH BARBARA WOULDN'T AGREE TO AND WOULDN'T REVEAL. AFTER ANOTHER COMMERCIAL BREAK, BARBARA GOT GRILLED.

You know what that tells me, tells me he wants money. Yes or no? she can't say. Leave her alone.

I think the viewers want to know.

IF YOU MUST KNOW, NOSEY VIEWERS, ZIMMERMAN'S LAWYER CONFIRMED THAT HIS NEARLY BROKE CLIENT ASKED ABC FOR 30 DAYS STAY IN A HOTEL WITH SECURITY.

George was thinking I don't want money in my pocket I want my wife safe for a month.

MEANWHILE BACK AT THE VIEW, 32 MINUTES INTO THE SHOW.

I was just told Mr. Zimmerman wanted to talk to me on the phone. We will be back and who knows what we're gonna get.

BY 37 MINUTES IN.

We're still waiting to see if we're going to receive a call from George Zimmerman.

BUT WHILE THEY'RE WAITING, WHY NOT SQUEEZE IN A MARRIAGE PROPOSAL.

SHE'S A VIRGIN FROM TLC's "VIRGIN DIARIES" WHO'S BEEN SAVING HERSELF 'TILL MARRIAGE.

Will you marry me? yes

BUT WILL BARBARA CONSUMMATE HER INTERVIEW? 50 MINUTES INTO THE HOUR-LONG SHOW, WE FINALLY FIND OUT.

In my little earpiece I'm telling, Zimmerman called, yes, that he just called and Mr. Zimmerman, if you could not do the interview yesterday, I don't think we should do a quick one today.

NO QUICKIES FOR BARBARA WALTERS.

We will now continue our program and with the people who agreed to interviews and then come here.

MAYBE SHE DIDN'T GET HER MAN, BUT SHE DID GET BACK AT HIM.
