TOO MANY OF US GET PUMPED UP TO START A SWIM SUIT DIET AND ARE DEFLATED BEFORE SUMMER'S END. DIETITIANS SEE IT ALL THE TIME. PEOPLE SETTING THEMSELVES UP FOR FAILURE.

JULIE STACEY/REGISTERED DIETITIAN

RUNS:

4:22 Whenever we have somebody come in, we'll take a look at their what they're currently doing.

ONE OF THE TOP DIET PITFALLS: SKIPPING MEALS. WE MIGHT THINK SHRINKING THE NUMBER OF TIMES WE EAT WILL TRIM OUR FIGURE, BUT IT DOESN'T ADD UP.

JULIE STACEY/REGISTERED DIETITIAN

RUNS:

3:27 Say we wake up and we skip breakfast, we've gone say 12, 15 sometimes 17 hours and haven't had anything to eat. Our body will go into that starvation mode. It tends to hold onto our weight more and metabolism tends to slow a little bit.

BESIDES, WAITING UNTIL YOUR RAVENOUSLY HUNGRY IS A RECIPE FOR OVEREATING. ANOTHER PITFALL IS MINDLESS BINGING. WE MIGHT BE DOING GREAT UNTIL SOMETHING BREAKS OUR RESOLVE.

JULIE STACEY/REGISTERED DIETITIAN

RUNS:

8:33 It's different really for each person I mean as far as emotional eating. Some people may eat if they're happy, sad, they may be stressed out and they eat because of that reason.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Maybe the mother of all diet busters, is eating out. Between high calorie foods and big portions. The simple fix is to choose wisely.

JULIE STACEY/REGISTERED DIETITIAN

RUNS:

16:13 We used to eat out maybe once a month years ago, now it's a part of our lifestyle. So if you're gonna eat out you've really got to make those good choices. Anything grilled, baked, broiled, roasted is usually going to be better.

A FINAL NO-NO, IS THE WORD DIET. WE'RE TELLING OURSELVES WE'RE GOING TO EAT BETTER, FOR A WHILE.

JULIE STACEY/REGISTERED DIETITIAN

RUNS:

10:36 Any change that you decide that you want to make, you have to ask yourself, can I do this forever?

IF IT'S NOT SUSTAINABLE, YOU COULD BE STUMBLING INTO THE SAME PITFALLS TIME AND TIME AGAIN. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

Gia, Forever Family - With thousand of Florida children in Foster Care small faith based agencies like this one 4Kids are giving hope to these children every day

Tom, 4Kids Executive Director: We started very small with just one lady and one church in 1997 fifteen years later we have been able to shelter over 16,000 children. This house where we are now is a home that a donor gave to us when he saw the need for siblings when they come into foster care they usually get split-up because very few people have enough room to take two or three or four kids in one home. And that is what 4Kids is about coordinating collaborating bringing the faith community together to be there to help that group of people.

Gia - So what is faith based foster care?

Tom: It is just the church being the church. Being there to help out a family a child. So they need to know somebody cares and when that one person shows true care true compassion true love for them and they know it is real, that gives them the hope they need to carry on day after day until they get through this.

Gia - And with so many children still waiting for that special kind of support. More and more are joining their cause. Return to index of stories...
