nats:

"Mr. Holmes do you have any questions about the initial advisement."

THE TEN MINUTE PROCEEDING WAS REALLY LITTLE MORE THAN LEGAL HOUSE KEEPING.

THE JUDGE SETTING THE RULES ON WHAT BOTH SIDES IN THE CASE CAN DISCUSS PUBLICLY. ALLOWING THE DEFENSE -WITH 24 HOURS NOTICE- TO EXAMINE THE CRIME SCENE AND SUSPECT'S APARTMENT.

CHARGES IN THE CASE. LIKELY MORE THAN 100 COUNTS. WILL COME NEXT MONDAY.

A DECISION ON THE DEATH PENALTY WILL TAKE MUCH LONGER. AFTER DISCUSSIONS WITH SURVIVORS AND FAMILIES OF THE VICTIMS.

"If the death penalty is sought that's a very long process that will impact their life for years, so we would want to get their input before we make any sort of decision on that."

PROSECUTORS STRESS THIS IS STILL A VERY ACTIVE. ON-GOING INVESTIGATION.

"We're still looking at the enormous amount of evidence and we would never presume that it would be slamdunk."

TODAY'S HEARING THE START OF WHAT WILL BE A LENGTHY LEGAL CASE.

nats

BUT AS THE MEMORIALS GROW. AND THE MOURNING CONTINUES -- IT'S CLEAR THE EMOTIONAL TRIALS THIS COMMUNITY MUST NOW FACE. WILL BE MUCH MORE DIFFICULT AND LAST A WHOLE LOT LONGER.

According to the lawsuit, environmentalists say the corps is violating the clean water act by not managing the lake to keep the river at appropriate water standards.

The corps operates three locks that allow water to flow from the lake to the gulf.

Emvironmrntalists want the river to move at minimum flow, or 300 cubic feet per second, but right now they say it's not.

They say if the lock gates were open more it would help the situation. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

DRIER WEATHER COMING

An abundance of tropical moisture which arrived over the weekend and hung on today will gradually give way to some drier air by Wednesday. For the balance of this evening I expect a few more downpours and thunderstorms to wash in from the Gulf of Mexico on the southwest wind we have in place. It looks reasonable to expect passing showers or a storm through midnight. Temperatures will not drop off too much tonight and we will stay in the upper 70's by tomorrow morning with high humidity.

The forecast for tomorrow calls for a few showers in the morning and midday with gradually improving weather by late day. Our high temperatures will hit the low 90's tomorrow afternoon as more sunshine prevails. It's possible that a few inland thunderstorms will pop up on Tuesday afternoon and drift inland toward Lake Okeechobee.

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I expect hot weather and mainly quiet afternoons. The chance for a thunderstorm will drop to 20% or less for these days. High temperatures for the week will continue to climb into the lower 90's and hit the middle 90's by the end of the week. Return to index of stories...

MEASURING A CHAMPION-PKG

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, timed events will be measured to one one-thousandth of a second - one millisecond - and that requires a high-tech timekeeping system built with cameras, lasers, computers and very accurate clocks.

LINDA MILOR

And the accuracy of today's timing circuitry is a thousandth of a second. So it's one hundred times more accurate than a stopwatch.

To make timekeeping more accurate and precise, engineers use technology to remove the possibility of error.

In track events, an electronic pistol starts the race.

NAT SOT: gunshot

Speakers behind the starting blocks allow each runner to hear the gun at the same time.

If a runner applies pressure in under 100 milliseconds, faster than any human can react, the system signals a 'false start' - and the race is stopped.

At the finish line runners interrupt a laser beam and their time is recorded - while a high-tech camera records more than 2,000 digital images per second.

LINDA MILOR

So these cameras allow us to get an image and show the result much more quickly than we used to in the past.

In swimming events -

NAT SOT

Take your mark.

- the start blocks also have speakers and measure reaction times.

NAT SOT

start sound, swimmers diving in

But at the finish, the athletes stop their own timer by touching pressure-sensitive pads that cover the end of each lane.

High definition video cameras above and below the water also record the finish -

NAT SOT

Here comes Lezak. Unbelievable at the end! He's done it!

- taking 100 pictures per second from different angles for judges to examine in a close contest.

With more than 3,000 athletes in 300 events at the 2012 Games in London - it will take timekeeping technology that is both accurate and precise to place the right athletes on the medal stands. Return to index of stories...

A TRAUMATIC CAR CRASH ---

IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE, ANYTIME.

ONE LOCAL POLICE OFFICER KNOWS THAT FIRST HAND.

HIS PELVIS WAS SHATTERED EARLIER THIS YEAR.

HIS ROAD TO RECOVERY IS ALMOST COMPLETE THANKS TO ORTHOPEDIC TRAUMA SURGERY.

AMY OSHIER REPORTS IN TODAY'S HEALTH MATTERS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER OSCAR BASORA WAS WORKING A CALL WHEN HIS CAR VEERED OFF THE ROAD AND INTO A TREE.

OSCAR BASORA/RECOVERING FROM BROKEN PELVIS

RUNS:

:52 When that happened it sent the weight of my body forward and my right knee struck the dashboard. And apparently in doing so it put a lot of pressure on the femur bone and on the pelvis causing my pelvis to fracture.

HE WAS RUSHED TO THE TRAUMA CENTER AT LEE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. HIS HIP WAS DISLOCATED, HIS SOCKET WAS SHATTERED. TRAUMA DOCTORS STABILIZED OSCAR, BUT HIS BROKEN BONES NEEDED HELP.

DR. PAT LEACH/ORTHOPEDIC TRAUMA SURGEON

RUNS:

3:48 Our trauma surgeons had put the hip back in place but still had the broken part of the hip socket to deal with. And that's where I became involved.

ORTHOPEDIC TRAUMA SURGEONS HANDLE COMPLEX FRACTURES, COMMON IN WRECKS AND ACCIDENTS.

DR. PAT LEACH/ORTHOPEDIC TRAUMA SURGEON

RUNS:

2:26 Anything that gets a human being moving faster than we're designed to be moving - cars, motorcycles, ATVs, dirt bikes. And particularly in Florida where we do have a large segment of the population that's older they get fractures a little more easily. Those are more difficult to treat because you don't have as good of a bone stock to work with.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

The pelvis can be a focal point for trauma injuries and a trouble spot for surgeons. To get to the fracture requires navigating through muscle then manipulating bone fragments.

THIS XRAY SHOWS OSCAR'S PELVIS TODAY.

DR. PAT LEACH/ORTHOPEDIC TRAUMA SURGEON

RUNS:

4:08 The back rim of the hip socket, which would be back here, and we did an operation where we exposed that, put it all back in place, and supported it with metal plates and screws.

TWO SCREWS HOLD THE BONE TOGETHER.

DR. PAT LEACH/ORTHOPEDIC TRAUMA SURGEON

RUNS:

:09 But if we just left those the bone would crack around it so then we support the bone by laying this plate over the top. And then screws go to normal bone above and below the fracture to hold that in place.

NOW A MAN OF STAINLESS STEEL, OSCAR IS BACK ON THE FORCE AND BACK ON THE ROAD.

OSCAR BASORA/RECOVERING FROM BROKEN PELVIS

RUNS:

6:24 Three and a half months for this type of injury, I think that's rather quick. I'm grateful that I healed quickly.

FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

7 GROSSEST THINGS IN FOOD-2 SHOT, VIDBOX RVL

WHEN WE FIRST HEARD ABOUT PINK SLIME - WE SCRUNCHED OUR NOSES OVER THE MYSTERY FOOD ADDITIVE IN PROCESSED MEAT.

BUT THERE ARE ACTUALLY SURPRISING SECRETS IN FOOD THAT COULD BE ON YOUR GROCERY LIST.

RESEARCHERS HAVE FOUND A LAUNDRY LIST OF ADDITIVES IN CHICKEN - INCLUDING ANTIBIOTICS, ANTI-DEPRESSANTS AND ALLERGY MEDS.

A WAY TO AVOID THE MEDICATED POULTRY IS BUYING ORGANIC.

ORGANIC REGULATIONS BAN THE ROUTINE USE OF ANTIBIOTICS.

SOME CEREALS CONTAIN "CELLULOSE" WHICH IS MADE FROM WOOD PULP OR COTTON.

THE CHEAP FILLER IS STUFFED INTO FOODS TO BUMP UP THE FIBER.

YOU CAN AVOID IT BY CHECKING THE LABELS OF YOUR FOOD.

RESEARCHERS ALSO FOUND DUCK FEATHERS IN PROCESSED BREADS.

THE FEATHERS ARE FOUND IN AN INGREDIENT CALLED "L-CYSTEINE".

IT SOFTENS DOUGH AND IS FOUND IN BAGELS, COOKIE DOUGH AND BREAD.

TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FEATHER FREE FEAST - CHECK WITH THE MANUFACTURER TO SEE IF THEY USE "L-CYSTEINE." Return to index of stories...

BEST DAYS TO SHOP-PKG

REBECCA CAIN IS ADJUSTING TO LIFE AS A NEW MOM. HER NEWBORN BABY GIRL NOW HAS HER SHOPPING FOR THINGS SHE'D NEVER SHOPPED FOR BEFORE.

"I was shopping for some baby clothes, babies outgrow clothes pretty quickly and i was looking for some value priced play clothes for the summer and Old Navy ran a special that was only good for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday."

FINDING A SPECIAL ON PARTICULAR DAYS IS COMMON ACCORDING TO JEFF NOBBS, CEO OF THE WEBSITE EXTRABUX.COM. WHICH ALSO HELPS CONSUMERS "BANK" MONEY.

"They just search for Target on our site they click our link to Target, and we receive a commission from Target on anything they purchase, we keep a little bit of that and pass the rest to the shopper as cash back."

REBECCA'S BEEN USING THE SITE FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS NOW. HAVING STARTED WHEN SHE WAS PLANNING HER WEDDING.

"I've racked up close to a thousand dollars in cash back from the site over time. for doing nothing more than going to the site and clicking."

JEFF TELLS US, EXTRABUX TRACKS WHAT THEIR CUSTOMERS ARE SHOPPING FOR. AND WHEN. AND ALSO THE PRICE HISTORY OF THE ITEMS.

"We had a hunch that the prices change and would fluctuate throughout the week, depending on which day of the week it was. So we took all this data, we analyzed it, and we found some pretty cool trends."

THEY FOUND THAT THE BEST DAY OF THE WEEK TO GET A DEAL ON CONSUMER ELECTRONICS. IS ON A MONDAY.

SAME DAY FOR VIDEOGAMES AND TV'S.

"Our thesis there is that shoppers are doing a bit of window shopping throughout the weekend, they're not necessarily buying online. Then Monday morning comes around, when most people do their online purchasing, so retailers want to have their price as low as possible."

ANOTHER ITEM COMMONLY PURCHASED ONLINE, JEWELRY. AND JEFF SAYS *WOMEN* ARE THE MAIN ONES LOOKING FOR THAT ONLINE.

"Wednesday is the cheapest day of the week to buy jewelry."

BEST DAY TO BUY A BOOK. SATURDAYS!

AND IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A HOME APPLIANCE, HOLD OFF UNTIL SUNDAY.

"Sunday is probably when home appliance projects are top of mind. So a lot of shoppers are out there looking for microwaves and dishwashers, and ovens. And so retailers want to make sure their prices are great on Sundays for those items." Return to index of stories...
