THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
"HOTTER AND DRIER THAN NORMAL"
We're in store for a hotter and drier weather pattern as we round out the work week as a strong ridge of high pressure builds westward from the Atlantic.
Our mornings will start off warm and muggy with temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s. With plenty of sunshine overhead through the afternoon hours, highs will be running a couple of degrees above the norm as most locations will climb into the middle 90s, with our beach and coastal locations nearing the 90° mark. Combine the actual air temperature with the humidity and the "feels like" temperature will feel a lot hotter than what the thermometer is actually reading. In fact, heat index values will soar into the low 100s.
Due to a drier airmass settling across the Florida peninsula, rain prospects will remain slim to none with the mention of only a late afternoon stray shower.
Not much cooling will take place, as temperatures through the evening hours will be slow to fall. Tonight, expect mostly clear conditions with lows in the upper 70s to near 80° along the coast with mid 70s across our inland communities.
Not much change is in the forecast as we head into the weekend as our weather pattern remains quite stagnant. Rain chances will stay lower than normal as sunshine and hot temperatures dominate through early next week.

A CONNECTICUT RESTAURANT BOUGHT A 17-POUND LOBSTER.
THAT WAS GOING TO BE SOMEONE'S DINNER!
BUT ONCE IT BECAME A LOCAL ATTRACTION--
THE RESTAURANT DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
AMANDA RAUS HAS THE STORY.
Return to index of stories...
SEAFOOD IS NORMALLY THE BIGGEST ATTRACTION AT THE DOCK RESTAURANT IN WATERFORD. BUT THIS WEEKEND, "LARRY THE LOBSTER" STOLE THE SHOW. THE 17-POUND SHELLFISH BECAME THE CENTER OF ATTENTION.
"People were so excited to see him, especially the kids, they loved him."
BUT WHEN THEY HEARD LARRY'S NEXT HOME WOULD BE A LOBSTER POT, THEY WEREN'T TOO EXCITED.
ENTER DON MACKENZIE, WHO IS THE VP OF BOATS INCORPORATED. LOCATED JUST ACROSS THE NIANTIC RIVER FROM THE RESTAURANT.
HE COULDN'T LET THE LOBSTER BE SOMEONE'S DINNER.
"If he is 70 to 100 years old, he's seen a lot of history, and speaking to the people at the aquarium, there's a lot more history to come. He could live to be over 100 years old, so instead of someone enjoying him for 15-20 minutes in a pot or butter and bit, let's let him find a home."
SO MACKENZIE BOUGHT THE LOBSTER FROM THE RESTAURANT. HE WOULDN'T SAY HOW MUCH IT COST HIM. ONLY THAT IT'S THE MOST EXPENSIVE LOBSTER HE'S NEVER EATEN.
"He sold me the lobster at his cost, and today Larry's free."
WHERE THE LOBSTER WAS ACTUALLY RELEASED IS STILL A MYSTERY LOCATION. THEY WANTED TO MAKE SURE THE LOBSTER HAD A CHANCE TO SURVIVE.
"We made sure he's in plenty of deep water; the water's the right temperature, and there are plenty of rocks around him so he can start eating again."
AND ENJOYING LIFE. RIGHT WHERE HE BELONGS.
"He brought so much joy and so many smiles here this weekend that we felt that he should be off the hook."

GIVEN TO ABC NEWS. KATHERINE, THE JACKSON CLAN MATRIARCH, SURROUNDED BY HER
CHILDREN JERMAINE, JANET AND REEBIE, ALONG WITH REEBIE'S DAUGHTER AND AN
EMPLOYEE OF THE RESORT WHERE SHE'S BEEN STAYING.
UPSOUND: There are rumors going around about me that I have been kidnapped
and held against my will. I am here today to let everybody know that I am
fine and I'm here with my children. And my children would never do a thing
like that, hold me against my will. It's very stupid for people to think
that.
LATE SATURDAY NIGHT KATHERINE'S NEPHEW TRENT REPORTED HER MISSING. AND PARIS
TWEETED, "MY GRADMOTHER IS MISSING I HAVEN'T SPOKEN WITH HER IN A WEEK. I
WANT HER HOME NOW."
UPSOUND: One reason why I haven't called is I just gave up my phone and I
didn't want to have any phone calls while I was here. My assistant Janice
Smith have been calling back home to see how things are going and she has
been keeping in contact with my nephew, I mean my grandson. and he says
everything is going fine but I was still thinking about the children and I
still worry about them but they're fine.
HERE, BY THE WAY, IS THE MIRAVAL RESORT IN TUSCON, ARIZONA. JERMAINE HAS
EXPLAINED, SHE'S THERE ON DOCTOR'S ORDERS.
UPSOUND: They saw that I needed rest and they wanted to take me away for a
while, just a short vacation to rest up. / They have taken very good care
of me and they have made sure that I got the rest I needed
MICHAEL JACKSON'S WILL NAMES KATHERINE AS THE GUARDIAN OF HIS CHILDREN. BUT
WEDNESDAY IN COURT, TEMPORARY CUSTODY OF PRINCE, PARIS AND BLANKET WAS
HANDED OVER TO THEIR COUSIN, 34-YEAR-OLD TJ JACKSON.
UPSOUND: I am devastated that while I've been away, that my children--my
grandchildren, have been taken away from me.
IN COURT THE JUDGE SAID KATHERINE IS QUOTE, "BEING PREVENTED FROM ACTING AS
GUARDIAN BY ACTS OF A 3RD PARTY."
UPSOUND: The ruling in court today was about the guardianship and I think
was based on a bunch of lies. but I have a good idea who's doing
that.

DRAMATIC NEWS IN THE WORLD OF MEDICINE!
NEW RESEARCH SHOWS THAT *LIPOSUCTION*--
COULD GIVE NEW LIFE TO PATIENTS WITH HERT PROBLEMS.
THE MIDWEST IS SUFFERING THROUGH ONE OF THE WORST DROUGHTS ON RECORD.
AND THE IMPACT GOES WAY BEYOND FARMING.
WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A TRIP DOWN THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER, TO SHOW YOU HOW LIFE IS CHANGING.

THE WATER LEVEL ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER AROUND MEMPHIS IS ABOUT THREE FEET AWAY FROM A RECORD LOW.
REPORTER NICK KENNEY TOOK A BOAT TOUR WITH THE COAST GUARD TO GET A CLOSER LOOK.
Return to index of stories...
The yellow line marks high water from a year ago.
A level now dropped dramatically.
Which matters surprisingly little to the local Coast Guard station here.

"As far as operational tempo, it pretty much remains the same. We're always keeping an eye on the river."
We hitched a ride with them on the river.
For a firsthand.
Up close and personal.
Water level view of the mighty Mississippi.
While not a record.
It hasn't been this low since the late 1980's.
A complicated buoy system has been adjusted for current depths.
Sand bars that are typically either entirely or mostly covered.
Now rise out of the river like massive sand dunes.
But for as much of the bank is visible.
For as visually stimulating as this tour may be.
The real-life effects on most of us are very minimal.
Unlike a year ago, homes are not threatened by low water levels.
The rules are no different for recreational boaters.
And river traffic passes through freely.

"The navigational channel is open. Commerce is flowing well. The, uh, navigational channel is good for the commercial vessels moving up and down."
Up and down is a way of life on the Mississippi.
A year ago it was up.
Right now, it's way down.

IT'S A CASE THAT RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW FAR CHILD CARE WORKERS SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO GO IN ADMINISTERING MEDICAL CARE.
IT'S A GROWING PROBLEM ACROSS THE COUNTRY--
PARENTS WITH CHILDREN WHO HAVE CHRONIC ILLNESSES ARE FINDING IT DIFFICULT TO FIND CHILD CARE.
FOR INSTANCE, THE PARENTS OF A 2-YEAR-OLD GIRL WITH DIABETES CLAIM A DAY CARE--
IS VIOLATING THE LAW BECAUSE WORKERS REFUSE TO GIVE HER INSULIN SHOTS.
SCOTT GORDON REPORTS FROM TEXAS.

2-YEAR OLD CAROLINE CAMPBELL LOOKS LIKE ANY OTHER LITTLE GIRL, AND SHE IS. EXCEPT FOR ONE THING.
SHE HAS TYPE 1 DIABETES. AND NEEDS AN INSULIN SHOT AFTER SHE EATS.
A ROUTINE SO COMMON, SHE DOESN'T EVEN FLINCH.
FOR MONTHS, HER FATHER SAYS, WORKERS AT CAROLINE'S DAYCARE, GAVE HER THE SHOTS SHE NEEDS.
"It worked for 4 months just perfect."
THEN, IN JANUARY, HE SAYS THEY SUDDENLY TOLD HIM THEY WOULDN'T DO IT ANYMORE.
"They said it was a liability issue?"
"It's an ongoing issue across the country."
THE GROUP "DISABILITY RIGHTS TEXAS" HELPED CAMPBELL FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT, CLAIMING THE DAYCARE IS DISCRIMINATING AGAINST CAROLINE AND VIOLATING THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT.
"I think there's a good chance the Department of Justice will take a particular interest in this case and and we're hopeful, like the Campbells and other clients, we are hopeful the law is enforced."
"We asked the Children's Courtyard for its response. The daycare sent us an email that doesn't address this specific case, but does say the company follows the law and makes reasonable accommodations for children with special needs."
"It could easily be fixed. The daycare at this point refuses to budge on what we feel is right as parents."
