FIRST ALERT FORECAST-CLIP

FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

We're in store for a hotter and drier weather pattern as we round out the work week as a strong ridge of high pressure builds westward from the Atlantic.

Our mornings will start off warm and muggy with temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s. With plenty of sunshine overhead through the afternoon hours, highs will be running a couple of degrees above the norm as most locations will climb into the middle 90s, with our beach and coastal locations nearing the 90° mark. Combine the actual air temperature with the humidity and the "feels like" temperature will feel a lot hotter than what the thermometer is actually reading. In fact, heat index values will soar into the low 100s.

Due to a drier airmass settling across the Florida peninsula, rain prospects will remain slim to none with the mention of only a late afternoon stray shower.

Not much cooling will take place, as temperatures through the evening hours will be slow to fall. Tonight, expect mostly clear conditions with lows in the upper 70s to near 80° along the coast with mid 70s across our inland communities.

Not much change is in the forecast as we head into the weekend as our weather pattern remains quite stagnant. Rain chances will stay lower than normal as sunshine and hot temperatures dominate through early next week. Return to index of stories...

THE MARKETS HIT THE GROUND RUNNING AFTER THE OPENING BELL THIS MORNING WITH THE DOW UP AS MUCH AS 250 POINTS IN EARLY SESSION TRADING AND FINISHING THE DAY UP 211 POINTS.

FINANCIAL ADVISOR, NICK CHLUMSKY JOINS US LIVE IN THE STUDIO.

NICK, ARE HEADLINES IN EUROPE STILL STEERING MARKETS OR IS THE ECONOMY SHOWING SIGNS OF STRENGTHENING? Return to index of stories...

WELLS ADVISORS-PLASMA

Well first, it's amazing what a few positive words from the President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, can do for markets around the world, not to mention our own markets here in the US. And as we all know, the continued uncertainty throughout Europe in regard to their economy, their borrowing costs, and the weakness in their banking sector has continued to drag markets down and make for very volatile conditions for the past several months. Return to index of stories...

WELLS ADVISORS-CG

And with the world now truly one global economy, this uncertainty and the threat of a possible Euro breakup has sent reverberations through the rest of the world's financial markets. Today, to help instill confidence in the markets and banking sector throughout Europe, Mario Draghi said that the European Central Bank would now do whatever it takes to preserve the Euro, including possibly buying Spanish and Italian bonds.

So to answer your first question, unfortunately, yes the headlines out of Europe are still steering our markets. But like we've talked about before it's news like we got today from Mario Draghi and other potentially positive developments out of Europe that could increase the risk of a market 'melt up." And we saw that today.

As to the second question of how investors should continue navigating through these markets, I would say with cautious optimism. Cautiously because we don't have a plan set in stone to make everything right in Europe quite yet. Cautiously because we don't know whether or not there is an imminent slowdown in China and/or throughout the globe.

And cautiously because we don't know what's going to happen to the tax and spending structure in the US in 2013. Many people refer to this risk as the Fiscal cliff.

But investors should be optimistic about the markets as valuations for equities are still relatively low compared to bonds or fixed income. In fact, at current interest rate levels, there is relatively little upside opportunity for appreciation in bonds. Optimistic because economic data here in the US is, generally, trending positively. Optimistic because eventually the trillions of dollars sitting on the sidelines in savings accounts and money market accounts is eventually going to find their way to riskier asset classes like stocks. And lastly, optimistic because stocks generally do pretty darn well during election years.

Now, as for the next several months, I think you can expect continued volatility. And we've already seen this in the month of July. The Dow started the month off at about 12,880, it has moved a total of 1,500 points, and is still at 12,880.

As for the mid-to-long term, we are optimistic about the stock market. Return to index of stories...

AT THE SAME TIME, WITH STORMS AND OTHER DISASTERS THE DEMAND IS STILL HIGH.

IN TODAY'S HEALTH MATTERS AMY OSHIER REPORTS ON A NEW DONOR CENTER THAT IS HOPING TO GET SOME FOOT TRAFFIC. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

A NEW STOREFRONT RECENTLY SET UP SHOP IN SOUTH FORT MYERS. IT'S IN THE BUSINESS OF BLOOD.

NANCY HENDRICK/LEE MEMORIAL BLOOD CENTER

RUNS:

2:40 We need about 800 units a week just to keep up the demand of all the hospitals and outlying sites that use blood.

THIS IS LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEMS FIRST OFF-SITE BLOOD DONOR CENTER. THE REST ARE IN HOSPITALS. THEY HOPED TO MAKE THIS LESS CLINICAL AND MORE FRIENDLY.

NANCY HENDRICK/LEE MEMORIAL BLOOD CENTER

RUNS:

:23 We have five donor beds and we have our platelet machine to take platelet donations. They can enjoy their time here, watch TV, nice flat screen TV we have in here. The colors and everything are kind of earth tones to make you feel comfortable.

IT COULDN'T COME AT A BETTER TIME. THE SUMMER DOLDRUMS DRAIN LOCAL BLOOD SUPPLIES.

NANCY HENDRICK/LEE MEMORIAL BLOOD CENTER

RUNS:

3:06 So we really need to rely on our community members here to have them step up to the plate and maybe donate one more time than their normal donation period.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

If you want to get people in the door, you have to go where the people are. Being in a strip mall is a good way to catch the eye of passersby.

JIM SHERMAN HAD NO PROBLEM FINDING THE NEW LOCATION.

JIM SHERMAN/PLATELET DONOR

RUNS:

1:34 it's very convenient, I mean it really is. Easy to get into, to get out of, and so I would encourage anyone to come and do it. You're doing something for someone else and you're also doing something for yourself.

HE'S USED TO ROLLING UP HIS SLEEVES. THE BLOOD CENTER IS LOOKING FOR MORE LIKE HIM. WHILE DONATIONS DRY UP IN THE SUMMER, THE NEED FOR BLOOD DOESN'T.

NANCY HENDRICK/LEE MEMORIAL BLOOD CENTER

RUNS:

3:38 There's still a lot of traumas. Some people take time to get hip replacement or surgery scheduled and that's a need, and also Cancer Center uses a lot of blood and blood products.

THIS IS ONE BUSINESS WHICH ISN'T TRYING TO MAKE A PROFIT AND PLANS TO GIVE EVERYTHING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

OLYMPIC SAFETY HELMETS-OC

ALL WEEK WE'VE, IN PREPARATION FOR THE LONDON OLYMPICS, WE'VE BEEN HIGHLIGHTING THE SCIENCE OF THE SUMMER OLYMPICS-

FROM RUNNING TO SWIMMING. HOW SCIENCE IS BEHIND THE SPORT.

WELL-- DON'T OVERLOOK SAFETY HELMETS, WHICH HELP PROTECT ATHLETES AS THEY GO FOR THE GOLD.

NBC'S LIAM MCHUGH EXPLAINS. Return to index of stories...

OLYMPIC SAFETY HELMETS-PKG

As Olympic athletes push themselves to jump higher, pedal faster, and hit harder, one of their most important pieces of equipment is the safety helmet.

SOT - QUEEN UNDERWOOD/BOXING:

IT DOES GET ROUGH IN THERE, YOU KNOW. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, GET WILD AND GET CRAZY.

Whether it's boxing headgear that absorbs multiple blows - or a cycle or riding helmet that cushions a single impact, safety helmets are designed for peak performance and maximum protection by engineers like Nikhil Gupta.

SOT - NIKHIL GUPTA

ALL HELMETS HAVE A THREE-PART CONSTRUCTION. THIS IS A HARD OUTER SHELL. THEN THERE IS A STIFF LAYER OF FOAM INSIDE. AND THEN THE INNERMOST PART IS A FLEXIBLE FOAM.

One way to determine the strength of a helmet's hard outer layer is by using a drop impact test.

SOT - NIKHIL GUPTA

IF YOU LOOK CAREFULLY THE DAMAGE WAS MORE ON THE FRONT SIDE COMPARED TO THE BACK SIDE HERE.

To test the strength of inner layer materials, Gupta uses a compression gun that fires a steel rod into the foam.

SOT - NIKHIL GUPTA

NOW YOU CAN SEE THAT EVERYTHING IS COMPLETELY CRUSHED HERE AND ALL THE WALLS ARE NOW MESHING WITH EACH OTHER. SO IN THIS CASE, THIS FOAM CANNOT PROTECT ANYBODY ANY MORE.

While cycle and equestrian helmets are designed to protect wearers for just a single impact, other helmets, such as the headgear worn by boxer Queen Underwood….

….cover the parts of the head and face that are most likely to receive blows, but it's also lightweight enough that the boxer can still bob and weave to avoid contact altogether.

SOT - QUEEN UNDERWOOD, BOXING

I'M NOT TRYING TO GET HIT IN MY FACE, YOU KNOW, OR TAKE ANY-- UNNECESSARY BLOWS.

SOT - NIKHIL GUPTA

FIELD TESTING IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT BECAUSE OF FUNCTIONALITY AND ALSO COMFORT PERSPECTIVE.

Gupta's tests are helping guide the design and development of better safety helmets, giving athletes the protection they need as they go for the gold in London. Return to index of stories...

DIABETES DAYCARE-OC

IT'S A CASE THAT RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW FAR CHILD CARE WORKERS SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO GO IN ADMINISTERING MEDICAL CARE.

IT'S A GROWING PROBLEM ACROSS THE COUNTRY - parents with children who have CHRONIC ILLNESSES are FINDING IT DIFFICULT TO get CHILD CARE.

For instance, THE PARENTS OF A 2-YEAR-OLD texas GIRL WITH DIABETES CLAIM A DAY CARE IS VIOLATING THE LAW BECAUSE IT REFUSES TO GIVE HER INSULIN SHOTS.

SCOTT GORDON REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

DIABETES DAYCARE-PKG

2-YEAR OLD CAROLINE CAMPBELL LOOKS LIKE ANY OTHER LITTLE GIRL, AND SHE IS. EXCEPT FOR ONE THING.

SHE HAS TYPE 1 DIABETES. AND NEEDS AN INSULIN SHOT AFTER SHE EATS.

A ROUTINE SO COMMON, SHE DOESN'T EVEN FLINCH.

FOR MONTHS, HER FATHER SAYS, WORKERS AT CAROLINE'S DAYCARE, GAVE HER THE SHOTS SHE NEEDS.

"It worked for 4 months just perfect."

THEN, IN JANUARY, HE SAYS THEY SUDDENLY TOLD HIM THEY WOULDN'T DO IT ANYMORE.

"They said it was a liability issue?"

"It's an ongoing issue across the country."

THE GROUP "DISABILITY RIGHTS TEXAS" HELPED CAMPBELL FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT, CLAIMING THE DAYCARE IS DISCRIMINATING AGAINST CAROLINE AND VIOLATING THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT.

"I think there's a good chance the Department of Justice will take a particular interest in this case and and we're hopeful, like the Campbells and other clients, we are hopeful the law is enforced."

"We asked the Children's Courtyard for its response. The daycare sent us an email that doesn't address this specific case, but does say the company follows the law and makes reasonable accommodations for children with special needs."

"It could easily be fixed. The daycare at this point refuses to budge on what we feel is right as parents."

CAMPBELL NOW LEAVES HIS JOB A FEW TIMES A DAY AND GOES TO THE DAYCARE TO GIVE CAROLINE AN INJECTION HIMSELF BUT HE SAYS HE WANTS TO SEE THE COMPANY CHANGE ITS POLICY FOR HER - AND OTHER CHILDREN LIKE HER. Return to index of stories...

NEW AT 4-

FORT MYERS MIDDLE ACADEMY JUST EARNED A 'D' FOR STUDENT PERFORMANCE ON THE F-CAT.

NEARLY 90 PERCENT OF IT'S STUDENT POPULATION COMES FROM A LOW-INCOME BACKGROUND.

BUT NOW THE SCHOOL IS LAUNCHING A BRAND NEW PROGRAM TO GET IT'S STUDENTS COLLEGE AND CAREER READY.

NBC 2'S KIM BROWN REPORTS ON HOW THEY HOPE IT LEADS CHILDREN TO SUCCEED. Return to index of stories...

FM MIDDLE SCHOOL REVITILIZATION-PKG

ON THE SURFACE.

THESE FORT MYERS MIDDLE STUDENTS ARE SWEEPING THE PAVEMENT.

BUT THEY'RE ACTUALLY BUILDING THE FIRST TWO OUTDOOR CLASSROOMS AT THE SCHOOL.

IT'S PART OF A COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS PROGRAM LAUNCHING THIS YEAR TO GET KIDS READY FOR THE FUTURE.

It's actually kind of helping us out to see what we want to go to in life.

I feel like its a really good experience.

THE STUDENTS WORK ON PROJECTS WITH DIFFERENT BUSINESSES TO SEE IF IT INTERESTS THEM.

TODAY THEY'RE WORKING WITH LOWE'S AND ROCK SOLID PAVEMENT DOING CONSTRUCTION.

They're getting an authentic real life experience so that at the end of the day they can say, 'oh I really enjoyed doing this I want to pursue a career in this' or, 'no this is not something I'm really interested in.'

THE SCHOOL RECEIVED A ONE POINT EIGHT MILLION DOLLAR GRANT FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO TRAIN TEACHERS FOR THE PROGRAM.

BUT THE SUPPLIES, LABOR, AND TIME FROM THE BUSINESSES ARE ALL DONATED.

The things that were trying to instill in our leaders this year is think, act, and lead differently. And that kind of goes in line with what were doing here.

ALL STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL CAN TAKE PART.

SOME OF THE OTHER PROJECTS INCLUDE COOKING, MODELING, AND EXPLORING PROFESSIONAL CAREERS LIKE LAW AND MEDICINE.

I can tell the 6th graders they can look up to the 8th graders and be like oh that's nice I want to help out with that too.

ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR THE KIDS - AND THEIR SCHOOL SINCE THE BUILDING IS OLDER AND BEING REVITALIZED.

NOW, THESE KIDS GET TO BE PART OF THE SCHOOL'S HISTORY - WHILE BUILDING THE FOUNDATION FOR THEIR FUTURE.

We're building hope for our kids. We have a lot of students who are brilliant and capable and they want to achieve in life,
