NBC 6PM SATURDAY |
STORMS FOR SUNDAY AND MONDAY
The tropics are definitely heating up. We're watching three systems right now.
First, one very close to home. An area of low pressure just off the east coast of Florida. The National Hurricane Center is giving it a 10% chance of developing further. So, the chances are slim to none. This area will shift to the northwest overnight and provide us with a lot of moisture for afternoon storms along the sea breeze Sunday and Monday.
Some of these could get strong to severe. I have a heads up!
Lows will be in the upper 70s, and they'll be very uncomfortable with humidity rising. Highs will stay in the lower to mid 90s.
Next, Tropical Storm Ernesto continues to churn in the Caribbean. It has slowed slightly, but it still on a westard track toward the Yucatan. We expect it to hit the Yucatan by Wednesday as a Category 1 hurricane. It will have NO impact on southwest Florida.
Lastly, Tropical Storm Florence is billowed up in the just off the coast of Africa. It's encountering cooler sea surface temperatures and a lot of wind shear. That'll work against the storm, and we expect to not strengthen much. The good news this storm will stay in the open waters and not effect any land areas.
The peak for Hurricane season is September 10th. Of course keep it locked to NBC-2 online, mobile, and on-air for constant updates.

Well, it's pretty risky, but we need to have a relatively precise landing, because we have an area that we want to land, near the base of the mountain in the middle of Gale crater. If you can imagine going into the Grand Canyon, where we can look at the history of Earth, really, in that area, as we look at various strata. That's what landing in the crater allows us to do.
CURIOSITY LAUNCHED LAST NOVEMBER.
NASA SAYS THE MISSION'S BEEN FLAWLESS SO FAR--
SO THEY EXPECT THE ROVER TO LAND ON SCHEDULE.

EDISON STATE COLLEGE WILL START THE SCHOOL YEAR OFF WITH BIG CHANGES.
A NEW PRESIDENT.
NEW DORMS.
WITH HOPE FOR A NEW ERA.
We've had some bumps but we've addressed those and we're continuing to address those things and we're working to constantly get better at what we do. This institution is a tremendous resource for this area.
THE SCHOOL IS TRYING TO ACHIEVE RE-ACCREDITATION.
THAT WAS A CONCERN FOR INCOMING FRESHMAN NIKOHL KROUSER.
That was the only worry I had.
BUT THE OPTION TO LIVE ON CAMPUS IN THE LIGHTHOUSE COMMONS DORMS CONVINCED HER TO ENROLL.
With class schedule I have it's quite a distance and having to drive back and forth about 4 times a day about 5 times a week.
THE DORMS ARE LOCATED ON THE LEE CAMPUS.
STUDENT HOUSING IS A FIRST FOR EDISON STATE - MEANT TO ATTRACT MORE STUDENTS TO THE CAMPUS.
INTERIM VICE PRESIDENT RUSSELL WATJEN SAYS OF THE 405 DORM ROOMS, 325 OF THEM ARE BOOKED.
I think this first year we probably won't be a hundred percent, but once we get through this year I think next year on we're going to have waiting lists to get in there.
WATJEN SAYS THEY'RE PLANNING MORE ON-CAMPUS EVENTS FOR STUDENTS AT NIGHT.
WITH THE GOAL OF MAKING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE BETTER THAN BEFORE AND ADDING A NEW FLARE FOR THE SCHOOL.
