THREE AREAS IN THE TROPICS WE'RE TRACKING.

ONE COULD MEAN MORE RAIN IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA THIS WEEKEND.

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M KELLY CRESWELL.

TODAY IS SATURDAY, AUGUST 4TH.

LET'S GO RIGHT TO JASON DUNNING. HE'S IN THE FIRST ALERT HURRICANE TRACKING CENTER KEEPING AN EYE ON THE TROPICS. Return to index of stories...

TODAY'S WEATHER-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Our weekend weather will get a little more interesting as we watch a tropical wave meandering off the east coast of Florida near the Bahamas. This disturbance has a slim chance of organizing into a tropical system, but it's proximity to Southwest Florida means we'll likely see an uptick in afternoon showers and storms.

Despite the better chance of rain through the weekend, our Saturday morning will be mainly sunny and dry with very warm temperatures in the 70s and 80s, but clouds will continue to build in through the afternoon eventually leading to scattered showers and storms. The chance of getting wet today will be close to 50%, and the storm cell movement will mostly be from east to west. Today's storms will also have the capability of producing very heavy rain and frequent, intense lightning.

By sunset tonight, most of the rain will fade as our sky becomes partly cloudy.

On Sunday, it's possible to start the day with a few morning showers on the radar, but most of us will be in store for a mix of sun and clouds and very warm conditions. By midday Sunday, the rain machine will get going again, and we'll see more scattered showers and thunderstorms.

In the tropics, Ernesto is gradually strengthening in the eastern Caribbean. The storm will likely continue its strengthening trend while it moves west, staying south of the island chain from Cuba to Puerto Rico. There appears to be two main scenarios with Ernesto: one, the storm tracks farther south and heads for Central America, or two, Ernesto finds a weakness in the ridge and moves toward the Yucatan and the northern Gulf. Both scenarios keep this storm away from Southwest Florida.

We also have a new tropical depression this morning in the far eastern Atlantic. It's possible this may strengthen into Florence over the next couple days, but this tropical wave will have a battle on its hands with lots of dry air and wind shear downstream. Return to index of stories...

IT WON'T BE LONG UNTIL THESE BUSES GET MOVING-

AND THIS SCHOOL YEAR, THEY'LL BE MOVING A LITTLE EARLIER.

THATS'S BECAUSE BELL TIMES ARE CHANGING -

HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL START CLASS 10 MINUTES EARLIER AND GET OUT 10 MINUTES EARLIER.

So ten minutes it's not that bad.

IT'S NOT MUCH OF A CHANGE TO THE LEIVA FAMILY.

TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR ROBERT MORGAN SAYS THE ADJUSTMENT WILL SAVE THE DISTRICT ONE AND HALF MILLION DOLLARS BECAUSE THEY WON'T HAVE TO PAY DRIVERS OVERTIME.

It's a win win for both sides. We save money financially. The students are not on the bus as long and to further emphasize how good it is the routes are safer.

THE IDEA OF CHANGING THE BELL TIMES CAME FROM AN AUDIT THAT WAS DONE ON THE DISTRICT'S TRANSPORTATION SERVICES TWO YEARS AGO - AND WAS APPROVED BY THE BOARD LAST DECEMBER.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BELL TIMES ARE CHANGING TOO.

HALF OF LEE COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WILL BEGIN AND END 5 MINUTES EARLIER-

THE OTHER HALF, 20 MINUTES EARLIER.

Whether its five minutes in the morning or 10 minutes in the afternoon, bit as a direct result of them 10 minutes here and ten minutes there in a cumulative time of the day it saves up. It saves time.

THE CHANGES ARE MEANT TO BE MINIMAL TO FAMILIES. AND MAKE THE DISTRICT'S BUSING OPERATIONS MORE EFFICIENT AND COST LESS.

I don't really see a difference it's only 10 minutes, but you know it'll encourage people to get up earlier I guess.

TRUE! BUT STILL NOT ENOUGH JOBS. IN FACT FOR MORE THAN 40 STRAIGHT

LAST MONTH MARKED FIVE YEARS SINCE A COLLIER COUNTY BUSINESS MAN WAS MURDERED IN IMMOKALEE.

FAMILY MEMBERS ARE STILL OFFERING A 200-THOUSAND DOLLAR REWARD FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO THE ARRESTS AND CONVICTIONS OF TWO SUSPECTS.

TRISH ROUTTE TALKS TO THE FAMILY AND INVESTIGATORS ABOUT THEIR PLEAS FOR THE PUBLIC'S HELP. Return to index of stories...

CRIME STOPPERS-PKG

Crime Stoppers segment for 8/4/12 - TRT: 1:41

Anchor lead: Last month marked five years since a Collier County business man was murdered in Immokalee. Family members are still offering a $200,000 reward for information leading to the arrests and convictions of two suspects - who remain unidentified and on the run. Trish Routte talks to the family and investigators about their pleas for the public's help.

Janeth Hassam - "He was the most giving man I'll ever know and he'll always be my hero."

For more than a decade, Homar Hassam was known as a generous business man - someone who would give food off the very shelves he stocked so that no one would go hungry. But in July 2007, two unknown gunmen brought Hassam's life to an end - and now investigators, along with Hassam's widow and two children, are pleading for answers and hoping for justice.

Janeth Hassam - "He lived a very humble life… he got along with everyone. Everybody loved him."

According to investigators, two suspects walked into Hassam's store on Lake Trafford Road in Immokalee around 1 p.m. The store was being renovated, and the men were supposedly looking for work - but Hassam had no jobs at the moment.

Det. Kevin O'Neill - "They come back a second time, Mr. Hasaam graciously says it's going to be awhile before he could use them. That's when the encounter occurs."

Trish Routte: Hassam was murdered in the store he worked so hard to build for 13 years - robbed of his wallet and his life. Numerous witnesses have come forward, and detectives have been able to come up with two sketches of the suspects - now they just need names to go with the faces.

Investigators describe both suspects are very dark skinned males, with acne marks on their faces. The family is putting together a $200,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the men responsible for Hassam's death - hoping the financial incentive will encourage someone to provide the information that will put two killers behind bars.

Janeth Hassam - "It does not bring him back - nothing ever will. But it brings some justice and the justice system works… Please come forward - do not be afraid."

For Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, I'm Trish Routte.

Anchor tag: Anyone with information on the murder of Homar Hassam is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-780-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous and will be eligible for up to $1,000 from Crime Stoppers - and up to $200,000 from the Hassam family. Tips may also be made online at www.swflcrimestoppers.org or via the TipSubmit app on any iPhone or by texting a tip to CRIMES Keyword: REWARD. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL
