Today's Weather Story
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
We'll notice some changes in the rain department today as our rain chances take a little bit of a dip, but we'll still be in line for some hit or miss afternoon storms during the peak heating of the day.
The difference between today and yesterday, though, is today's rain will likely cover much less ground; rain coverage will be considerably lower at 30% instead of Monday's 70%.
It also appears the best chance of getting wet will be over northern portions of the viewing area, so if you live in Collier County, your chances of seeing a storm will be lower than in Charlotte County.
Aside from the isolated afternoon storms, today will be mainly sunny and hot. Temperatures will have the potential to warm into the mid 90s, and the heat index will be near 100 degrees.
Rain chances will dwindle even more Wednesday as some drier air briefly takes hold of Southwest Florida, so the main focus will be on the heat as temperatures soar into the mid 90s.
By Thursday and Friday, afternoon showers and storms will make a comeback, and it looks like the afternoon thunderstorm pattern will be in place through the upcoming weekend as well.
In the tropics, Ernesto is struggling with some dry air at the moment, which has prevented the storm from strengthening into a hurricane overnight. Ernesto still has very warm water to work with as well as an overall favorable environment for future strengthening before landfall tonight near Belize and the Yucatan peninsula. Once Ernesto crosses the Yucatan, the system is expected to briefly move into the southern Gulf, and its final destination will likely be the coast of Mexico Friday morning.
Elsewhere, the former Tropical Storm Florence is no longer a tropical threat as what was left of the system eroded due to dry air and wind shear.

DESKS STAND SPOTLESS. LABELED WITH EACH STUDENT'S NAME, LIKE THIS ONE FOR CAYDEN. MS. CAMPAGNE'S KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOM IS ALL SET FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.
"I'm ready! I'm excited. Yay!!! I'm very excited."
THIS YEAR AT NEIL ARMSTRONG ELEMENTARY, THE STUDENTS WILL LEARN MORE THAN JUST MATH AND READING. THEY'LL ADOPT NEW HABITS.- 7 OF THEM.BEFORE THEY EVEN CRACK OPEN THE BOOKS.
"It's not enough to just teach academics you also have to teach them how to be a good person."
THE HABITS AREN'T BAD ONES. LIKE NAIL BITING OR CRACKING YOUR KNUCKLES ,THEY'RE POSITIVE. LIKE "BEING PROACTIVE"AND "THINKING WIN WIN."
"The whole point of the habits are to start young so they can grow up with these so they can change their lives."
THE 7 HABITS COME FROM A PROGRAM CALLED "THE LEADER IN ME".
NEIL ARMSTRONG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HAS USED IT FOR A FEW YEARS NOW--
THIS YEAR IT'S TAKING A NEW TITLE. NOW CALLED A "LIGHT HOUSE SCHOOL"
IT'S WHERE THE SCHOOL SERVES AS A MODEL OF LEADERSHIP AND MENTORS TO OTHER SCHOOLS IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA. SO THEY, TOO CAN APPLY THE 7 HABITS.
"It's teaching them about manners and what's fair, to be kind and use nice hands"
AND THE PROOF IS IN THE NUMBERS
THE FIRST YEAR NEIL ARMSTRONG ELEMENTARY APPLIED THE PROGRAM, IT CUT DISCIPLINE BY 60 PERCENT.
"This is setting up expectations up from day 1, saying 'this is the way we are going to do it'. It's like magic."
SO EVERY YEAR FOR CAYDEN. AND 800 OTHER NEIL ARMSTRONG STUDENTS,. IS A PRODUCTIVE ONE.
TEACHING THEM SKILLS. FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.
"They're taking what I've taught them and applying it to the 21st century learning which is a huge part of being a lighthouse school and preparing them for a future."

Full Forecast
