THIS IS ALL THAT'S LEFT OF THE 26-FOOT VESSEL.
IN AN NBC-2 EXCLUSIVE, ALEX SEMPF TALKS TO OUR SAUNDRA WEATHERS ABOUT HOW HE SAVED HIMSELF AND HIS SON.
Return to index of stories...
Alex Sempf's legs are covered in Bandages.
60 percent of his body- covered in burns.
And His outlook on life- a lot different than it was a month ago.
I know I'm a walking miracle. And praise God. God is alive and he heals and I am walking proof of that.
Sempf got the burns last month when his 26 foot boat exploded.
He says the fire started when he tried to clean up a gas spill with a shock vacuum.
there was some fumes inside the vac and as soon as I turned it off, the vac had fire inside of it and since there was spilled gas on the carpet. It turned into to a flash fire.
Sempf's 11-year old son Kristoff, was also on board the burning boat.
my son was in the back of the boat helping me. I screamed at him to get out so he was able to run out of the boat.
But this single father of two got the worst of it.
While I was standing there on fire watching myself burn I had to stay calm and say if you don't get this lock open and gonna get out of this boat and you're gonna be dead.
But he survived and so did his son Kristoff- Who only suffered from burns to his legs and feet.
He's recovering with family near the burn unit in Tampa and is expected to back home in time for school.
As for this single father of two, he's home and doing a lot better than expected.
originally I was told six months to two years so here I am after 5 weeks.
He credits his healing process on prayer and his faith in god and says now he's going to focus on his true purpose in life.
Being a father and accomplishing some of his dreams.

JUST WEEKS AFTER A MEAT SALESMAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED IN CAPE CORAL--
TWO PHONE REPAIRMEN ARE SHAKEN TONIGHT AFTER A HOMEONWER PULLED A GUN ON THEM.
POLICE SAY ROBERT PAGANO THREATENED THE MEN WHEN THEY KNOCKED ON HIS DOOR YESTERDAY MORNING.
NBC-2'S STEVE CAMPION TALKED TO PAGANO'S WIFE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED.
Return to index of stories...
With his finger on the pistol's trigger and threats leveled -- cape coral police officers claim Robert Pagano pointed the revolver at two cable workers.
His wife tells only NBC2 -- no way.
Mariss Pagano, wife
1328 "in a million years, he would never raise a pistol at someone."
She explains rage and anger don't describe her husband.
After a century link employee knocked on pagano's front door to alert him about phone repairs yesterday, Investigators claim Pagano scared them and made them fear for their lives.
Century link representatives tell us despite the run-in they reported for work today.
Brian Hamman, Century Link
0834 "we'll knock on the door and identify ourselves. We wear marked uniformed. We'll reinforce safety measures."
Brian hamman with century link doesn't see much more his workers could do to safeguard their lives -- neither do police.
Lt. Tony Sizemore, CCPD spokesperson
0508 "common sense needs to come into play. That they have an obligation to tell them about repairs is not justification for any type of threatening action."
Lt Sizemore explains stand your ground only applies when a reasonable person would feel threaten.
In this case, he argues it doesn't pass the test.
Pagano's wife counters the arrest is a big misunderstanding.
Pagano, wife 1353 "I've never see him raise a pistol. He might have been startled but he wouldn't raise a pistol."

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
A BREAK FROM RAIN … FOR NOW
Tonight, the weather will be much different from last night as we track only a few showers across southwest Florida. It will certainly be mild and muggy tonight, but the outlook for big downpours is low. In fact, a check of the charts today is showing that we will have another quiet day tomorrow. Morning low temperatures on Wednesday will start out in the upper 70's and our afternoon high temperatures will reach the mid 90's. Humidity and heat will make tomorrow another very hot day. Rain showers and storms will be few and far between on Wednesday as we track a little dry air moving above Florida. I think there will be only one or two areas of rain to track tomorrow … if we are lucky.
Looking ahead, the moisture will return to southwest Florida by the end of the week and there will be more storms to track this weekend. Forecast computer guidance is telling me that our chance for those pesky afternoon storms goes back to 50% - 60% on Saturday and Sunday….plan accordingly!
In the tropics, no storms are pointing at Florida. Ernesto is now a Hurricane and should make landfall on the west side of the Yucatan Peninsula tonight.
