FIRST WEATHER-OMNITOPS-ANIBOXES

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

LOTS OF SUN, LITTLE RAIN

I'm forecasting a fairly quiet week of weather.

We're stuck in a stagnant pattern with winds from the west-southwest. This pushes the sea breeze well inland, and consequently, keeps the rain east of I-75.

From time-to-time a brief downpour will sneak into our urban areas late in the day when the sea breeze retreats back to the coast. So, an isolated late evening rain event cannot be ruled out.

The above scenario will be in play each day - rain stays inland during the afternoon, and then brief downpours for the populated regions after 7 PM.

High pressure is to thank for all this, and it's not leaving until next week. So, get used to the nice August weather!

Highs will be a tad warmer, too, because the air underneath a high pressure sinks. The sinking air will compress and force the air to heat up. The current thinking is for readings to be around 93 to 95 now through the weekend. Of course it will feel uncomfortable because of humidity values. It should feel over 100!

When it comes to tropical weather, there are two areas we're watching.

First, the remnants of Tropical Depression will hit Central Mexico. It's just a tropical wave and will not strengthen further.

Next, an area in the middle of the Atlantic will likely strengthen into our next Tropical Depression. We expect it to stay out to see, and it will not bother any land areas. Return to index of stories...

VOTING ISSUES-PKG

Take pkg

Ed Kiesel, voter

1528 "the litmus paper if you want to talk about politics or if you wanna complain about politics and you didn't vote. Keep your mouth shut."

So american and so precious -- the right to vote is a right of passage.

Take Nats

While candidates' supporters sometimes outnumber the voters turning out at precincts in southwest Florida at any given time -- this mother and daughter voted together.

Ally and Gena Burtch, daughter and mom

2232 "I just wanted to come with here and give here a little support for the 1st time. It's a little intimidating."

Fresh off her first ever vote -- 19 year old ally Burtch tells us she researched and closely reviewed who'd get her support.

In almost every way -- she's the opposite of voter apathy.

Burtchs, voters

2315 "people don't think it will make a difference. Steve: you think it will? I think every vote counts."

Voter turnout is nowhere near a presidential election -- despite the fact many elections will be decided with today's vote.

Sharon Harrigton, Lee County supervisor of elections

0419 "a lot people think this is a republican primary but there are a lot of non-partisan races on the ballot, school board, democratic senate race. There is something out there for everybody."

Lee county's supervisor of elections -- explains it costs atleast 350,000 dollars to hold today's election.

If every single registered person made it to the polls -- that is about 93 cents a vote.

Harrington, "you're cost per vote goes up. The money we have to spend is very high."

And no matter the hike, time, or heat -- some tell us showing up today to be counted -- is a civic responsibility.

Kiesel, voter

1653 "as a citizen of this nation, you need to get out and be a part of the process." Return to index of stories...

Empty streets on fifth avenue in naples isn't uncommon this time of year but this massive construction project is. Local business owners say its the price they have to pay to prevent flooding.

Take Vo

We spoke with city engineers today about the storm water improvement project.

They tell us it's been in the works for years-but they had to make sure it was done at the right time-once season was over.

The project will prevent businesses and streets from flooding on an entire stretch of fifth avenue.

This intersection actually floods in very heavy storms and the work that they're doing will connect this intersection to a much bigger storm water system.

The project is expected to be wrapped up as early as tomorrow if the weather permits. And once it's done, these business owners will no longer have to worry about the potential of weather flooding their stores.

Some of these tests that we do, some of this evidence that needs to be tested and validated it doesn't happen within 40 minutes and tv commercials like csi or something. It takes a little hit of time and there are certain rules we have to play by."

because of those rules- sheriff mike Scott says they had to let jaye and retherford go.

Before he was shot deputies say retherford killed Greg imhoff as well.

A tragedy Scott says the system allowed.

Sot Scott

" the criminal justice system as we know it and how it has evolved front hat night, is failing us with people like Billy ray retherford. "

Retherford has been convicted of 14 felonies in lee county alone from 1988 to 2007.

The affidavit states " the defendant rushed me and grabbed my gun hand and attempted to get my weapon away from me. At this time I became fearful for my safety."

And while Billy served more than 15 years in state correction facilities for that and other crimes, Law enforcement believes he still committed more.
