Saundra weathers-look live

These saw palmetto berries may not look like much but nutritionists tell us they're used to help treat prostate cancer. They're also a hot commodity in Immokalee. So hot the owners of a local produce company say someone stole 40,000 dollars worth of them.

Vo

Ashley Sanchez and her family have been buying and selling Saw palmetto berries for more than a decade.

Nats

Sot 41:35 ashley

People that are out of jobs or just want some extra money, they'll go pick them themselves and then we'll dump them into the big bins and we ship them off like that.

The berries go for about 80 cents a pound and once they collect enough-their worth adds up-especially for the people who need them the most.

Sot

41:20 ashley

They take them to Orlando to big buyers and they'll dry them and sell them as medicine for prostate cancer and urinary diseases.

That's why Sanchez and her family were so distraught when they discovered someone broke into their gate-where the berries were-and stole an entire truck full of them.

43:02 ashley

It was helping someone else. I think it's worse because you not only hurt us, you hurt people who are really sick and who really need the product.

Naples Neurologist, Dr. David Perlmutter says he gives the berries to his patients.

01:04 Perlmutter

The importantance of saw palmetto berries is actually been proven in the journal o the American medical association to really help men with prostate problems. It improves their ability to urinate and it improves their flow ability.

Which its not a cure, it's enough for the Sanchez family to do everything to track their stolen berries down.

The owners tell us the semi truck shouldn't be hard to find. They say its a green freight liner with pin stripes on it. It has silver on the front and the tag number reads B513RJ.

if you have any information contact the sheriffs office. Family is also offering reward. In Immokalee Sw nbc Return to index of stories...

-me & antonio ray-"aqui se queda el aqua. Todo negro aqui."

Antonio ray lives on jacaranda parkway. Today the swales in front of his northwest cape coral home are empty. But last weekend they were overflowing with storm water runoff.

-heavy rain noise

Heavy rain if flooding parts of the northwest cape, putting a damper on the quality of life for people - like ray - who live here.

-ray being animated.

Today, city staff unveiled a stormwater master plan aimed at fixing flooded streets.

-steve neff/PWD-"generally were looking at increasing pipe sizes, adding some additional pipes to drain the water for the flooding issues."

But those much-needed drainage improvements cost money.

-neff-"as always there's limited funding for everything you do in life."

So the city has come up with a criteria to determine which streets get fixed first.

Problematic areas will be ranked according to the number of developed properties, duration and severity of flooding, size of area impacted and cost.

-bill edwards/avalon engineering-"this would alleviate those concerns being able to get to their residences, swales not being full with water for 3-4 days."

Which means affected homeownes - like ray - can shift his attention to cleaning out his garage Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

SCATTERED STORMS THIS WEEK

The weather pattern marches forward with little change for southwest Florida. After looking at the newest computer models this afternoon, it seems like the forecast for tonight and tomorrow will feature the same story as the past few days. A few showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop through sunset with some areas getting a good downpour, gusty winds and lightning. The storms will generally fire up east of the interstate and then drift slowly back to the west after sunset. Mild temperatures and very humid weather continues tonight and through tomorrow morning with a low in the mid/upper 70's on Thursday. Tomorrow's weather will be hot and humid with scattered afternoon and evening downpours and storms.

In the tropics, we are close to seeing another tropical storm developing in the Atlantic. This storm will likely become "Gordon" and the future track keeps this well away from Florida. In fact, the models predict at this point that the storm would turn north even before reaching Bermuda. Elsewhere … no developing system appear to be pointing at Florida for the rest of the week and weekend. Return to index of stories...
