But now, we have a subtle change in wind direction to track and the more south/southwesterly flow will bring a few coastal showers in the morning and hit or miss storm in the early afternoon. AFTER TRADING NEARLY SIDEWAYS FOR PAST 6 TRADING DAYS THE DOW SHOT UP 85 POINTS TODAY TO END THE SESSION AT 13,250.
NICK, ALTHOUGH THERE'S BEEN UPS AND DOWNS, THE MARKETS HAVE BEEN STEADILY RISING SINCE THE LOWS BACK IN EARLY JUNE.
NOW THAT EQUITY MARKETS ARE AT FOUR AND A HALF YEAR HIGHS, CAN INVESTORS REALLY EXPECT THE MARKETS TO GO HIGHER FROM HERE?
Return to index of stories...
Well, to answer that question, we have to look at what has happened historically, particularly during election years, but we also have to take into consideration what is happening right now and in the months to ahead in terms of the macro-environment, fiscal and fed policy, and the fundamentals of both the equity and the fixed income markets.
Return to index of stories...
So first, and I think Jim pretty well covered the historical part of this on Tuesday, election years bode very well for the equity markets. In fact, as Jim pointed out, election year market returns have been positive 80% of the time since 1928. But here's really another more timely statistic…The return in the last 7 months of the year has been negative only twice in the past 15 elections since 1950.
Therefore, from a historical point of view and statistically speaking, I would say, since we're in an election year, yes, there's a pretty good chance that markets will go higher from here.
In regard to the here and now and in the months to come…
Looking at the macro-environment, it appears that the US economy will continue to grow at a modest pace. Economic reports including retail sales, unemployment claims, and the housing continue to trend positively. And although there's been some concern about the economies of China and India slowing in the recent months, these two economies will continue to be drivers for global growth for decades to come.
o Stocks are still cheap relative to bonds
Looking at the fundamentals, stocks are still looking cheap relative to bonds. American companies continue to impress the investing community with not only positive earnings but also earnings growth. And the fact that interest rates are still at near zero also tells me that the upside opportunity in stocks is probably much greater than that of bonds.
On the political front, I think if we can see republicans and democrats meet halfway on issues like the budget, healthcare reform, and the expiration of the Bush Tax cuts…markets could move appreciably higher as investors get more clarity on taxes and other legislation that could potentially impact their investment returns in the future.
Return to index of stories...
Barring some unforeseen natural disaster or geopolitical event, I believe that although the ride may be bumpy in the interim, I would expect to see stocks move higher in the mid-to-long term as the US economic recovery continues to gain traction. More unity and compromise out of our leaders in Washington would only serve to help push equity markets higher.
