NBC2 TRACKING RAIN AT NOON.

SOME SHOWERS DOTTING RADAR AROUND THE INLAND AREA.

LET'S TURN IT OVER TO TYLER MAULDIN TO SEE IF IT WILL IMPACT US TODAY. Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

We'll close the work week out with a very muggy airflow coming in off the Gulf of Mexico. This will keep hit or miss morning coastal showers and storms in the forecast with a slightly higher chance for rain in the afternoon mainly east of the I-75 corridor.

Clouds will mix in with our sunshine on this Friday, but that won't prevent our temperatures from climbing into the lower to middle 90s. Humidity will be plentiful, and that will keep our heat index value or "feels like" temperature well over 100°.

A couple of isolated downpours are possible through the evening with skies clearing overnight. Temperatures will be slow to cool and will eventually settle into the mid and upper 70s by morning.

A weak flow out of southwest will hang on through the weekend with the opportunity of morning and midday showers across the urban corridor, before winds become a bit more easterly by the middle of next week.

In the tropics, things are relatively quite for mid August. We have tropical storm Gordon in the central Atlantic, which may strengthen into a category 1 hurricane over the weekend. Either way, this system poses no threat to Southwest Florida as it stays out to sea. Return to index of stories...

TALKING POLITICS,

MITT ROMNEY IS OFFERING NEW INFORMATION ABOUT HIS TAX RETURNS.

THIS, AS HIS NEW RUNNING MATE ADJUSTS TO LIFE ON THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN TRAIL.

NBC'S RON MOTT IS IN THE BATTLEGROUND STATE OF VIRGINIA. Return to index of stories...

POLITICS TODAY-PKG

MITT ROMNEY GOT A BRIEF REPRIEVE FROM PERSISTENT QUESTIONING ABOUT HIS TAXES. THANKS IN LARGE PART TO HIS PICK OF PAUL RYAN AS HIS V-P RUNNING MATE.

BUT THURSDAY. THE THORNY ISSUE NIPPED AT HIM ONCE MORE. PROMPTING THE FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR TO AGAIN RESPOND TO ACCUSATIONS HE'S WITHHOLDING THE RELEASE OF MORE TAX RETURNS BECAUSE HE PAID LITTLE OR NO TAXES OVER THE PAST DECADE.

I did go back and look at my taxes and over the past 10 years I never paid less than 13 percent. I think the most recent year is 13.6 or something like that. So I paid taxes every single year.

IT'S THE FIRST SUBSTANTIAL DISTRACTION FOR THE CAMPAIGN AWAY FROM RYAN'S MUCH-DISCUSSED DEBUT ON THE NATIONAL STAGE. A WEEK FILLED WITH A LIFE-CHANGING ANNOUNCEMENT LAST SATURDAY.

. A SUNDAY HOMECOMING IN WISCONSIN.

"It is good to be home!"

. THIS CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH A PROTESTER COME MONDAY.

. AND A CHALLENGE THURSDAY FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA TO BRING THE FIGHT ON MEDICARE. A CENTRAL ATTACK POINT OF RYAN'S CONTROVERSIAL BUDGET PLAN.

You think raiding Medicare to pay for Obamacare is an achievement? Crowd: Noooooo! Neither do I.

PAUL'S APPOINTMENT AS ROMNEY'S NUMBER-2 HAS BEEN MET WITH CHEERS FROM THE RIGHT.

. AND BOTH CHEERS AND JEERS FROM THE LEFT. WHICH VIEWS HIM AS A HITTABLE TARGET.

So far the challenge has been that Romney's campaign seems to wants to embrace Ryan for his boldness, and the fact that conservatives like him, but they don't seem eager to actually embrace the details of the policies he's advocating.

REPUBLICANS HAVE ESSENTIALLY ADOPTED RYAN'S SO-CALLED "ROADMAP FOR AMERICA'S FUTURE". INCLUDING TRANSFORMING MEDICARE BY INCORPORATING A VOUCHER SYSTEM.

AND SOME ANALYSTS SAY WINNING *THAT* BATTLE. ABOVE EVEN THE ECONOMY. COULD DETERMINE WHETHER ROMNEY-RYAN IS ULTIMATELY A SUCCESS STORY.

They're gonna have to explain to the American people why their approach and their plan is better than what the president has offered, and if they can successfully articulate that, they have a much better shot of winning the White House. Return to index of stories...

FUGITIVE FRIDAY-5 SS

We're starting off our list with a man accused of abducting his own grandson, keeping the 12 year old from his mother for an extended amount of time before finally returning the boy, but then fleeing from the law. Last fall, a warrant was issued for the arrest of 58 year old Donald Byrd for obstruction of custody and child stealing after the on-going dispute with his daughter. Deputies say Byrd, who had worked as a teacher in Collier County for 25 years, withheld the boy from his mother, despite court orders to return the child. But once mother and son were reunited, grandpa went on the lamb. Knowing that he was facing jail time for his actions, Byrd grabbed his belongings and went into hiding. When deputies went to his Collier home, they found it cleared of clothing and all belongings other than major appliances. Although Byrd did have strong connections in Collier County, there's a good chance he'd fled the area. But deputies are willing to go wherever it takes to bring Byrd into custody and ensure that he gets his day in court.

And in Lee County, deputies are on the hunt for a man with who simply can't take "no" for an answer, violating five separate restraining orders and now wanted for violating his probation following an arrest for aggravated stalking. 26 year old Raymond DeJesus is no stranger to a life of crime, with a laundry list of arrests on his rap sheet, starting with felony charges of burglary and grand theft at the age of just 14. Since then, he's been jailed for battery, shoplifting, resisting arrest and several charges of domestic violence. In his most recent episode, DeJesus was found hiding in the backyard of the victim's home, after leaving numerous violent messages and texts, as well as physically damaging the woman's house. When she spotted DeJesus in her yard, she immediately called 9-1-1, at which point DeJesus fled on a bicycle and went into hiding. This Fort Myers fugitive was last known to be living in the Dunbar area, and is known to have gang affiliations. He has several tattoos, including a tear drop on his face, the Puerto Rican flag on his left arm and the ever popular "Only God can judge me" phrase on his right arm.

Also trying to lay low this Friday afternoon is Kenny Lee Rice, a long time and well versed con man, currently wanted on a growing list of charges, all related to the passing of bad checks throughout Southwest Florida. Detectives say Rice has been writing checks for very large amounts, mostly to automotive businesses to the tune of thousands of dollars. It's believed he's then trading the fraudulently purchased items for drugs, which has been his MO for years. Thus far, Rice has been arrested 35 times in Lee County, and during one arrest alone, he was charged with 62 separate counts of fraud and theft. A few years back, he even scammed a small family day care, using their credit card number to go on a $6,000 shopping spree for himself and a friend. Rice is a registered convicted felon, who could be in the North Fort Myers or Punta Gorda area. Upon his arrest, he will be held without bond.

And last, but certainly not least, is Nelson Sanderson, the latest addition to Crime Stoppers 10 Most Wanted list. This 71 year old fugitive has been on the run for nearly a month now, on the heels of a warrant for two counts of the lewd or lascivious molestation of a child under the age of 12. According to the arrest warrant, Sanderson is accused of performing extremely repulsive acts on a child on one or more occasions between July 2010 and July 2012. The victim was a young girl to whom Sanderson was an authority figure, however his accused actions terminated that level of trust. Sanderson was last known to be living in North Fort Myers, and if he's convicted of the charges, he'll be facing two life felony sentences. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

KIDS & ANTIBIOTICS-CLIP VO IN PLASMA

FOR DECADES WE'VE RELIED ON ANTIBIOTICS TO KILL OFF BAD BACTERIA.

NOW THERE'S A CONCERN ABOUT THEIR IMPACT TO GOOD BACTERIA.

ONE DOCTOR SAYS THERE'S A DIRECT LINK TO OBESITY IN KIDS.

HERE'S STEPHANIE CHUANG. Return to index of stories...

KIDS & ANTIBIOTICS-PKG

ELISA NICHOLSON CALLS SOPHIE… HER MIRACLE BABY.

SHE WAS TOLD SHE WOULD NEVER CONCEIVE. BUT THREE YEARS AGO…

SOPHIE WAS BORN…

"She is everything that I wanted."

SO WHENEVER THERE'S AN EARACHE… IT'S IMMEDIATELY OFF TO THE DOCTORS FOR ANTIBIOTICS.

"If she needs it I want to give it to her."

IT'S THE SAME WITH CASH AND ESPECIALLY… LITTLE CATCHER…

AT THE SIGN OF ANY FEVER… TANYA SCHEVITZ IS ON A MISSION TO FEED HER SONS ANTIBIOTICS.

"When he gets an ear infection he gets a really high fever immediately. He goes to 104 and its pretty scary …and I'm just not willing to wait it out."

MOST KIDS GET REPEATED EAR INFECTIONS ACCORDING TO THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF OBESITY.

IT'S 80 TO 90-PERCENT OF TODDLERS UP TO AGE THREE AND ANTIBIOTICS IS THE MOST POPULAR REMEDY.

BUT DOCTOR JOHN MORTON SAYS RELYING ON ANTIBIOTICS… IS RISKY…

"They've looked at kids who got repeated antibiotic treatments versus kids that just got the tubes in their ears and drained them. And the kids who got antibiotics were the ones who ended up gaining more weight."

MORTON IS THE DIRECTOR OF BARIATRIC OR WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY AT STANFORD…

HE SAYS ESSENTIALLY… EVERYONE HAS GOOD AND BAD BACTERIA IN THE STOMACH…

INTRODUCING TOO MANY ANTIBIOTICS INTO THE BODY MAY THROW THAT BALANCE OF BACTERIA OUT OF WHACK AND DISRUPT THE PROCESS OF DIGESTING FOOD AND METABOLIZING VITAL NUTRIENTS… ESPECIALLY FOR KIDS.

"It's at its most vulnerable point… at that point in time, even a few courses of antibiotics can upset that balance and may not have bacteria you need to have good healthy weight down the road."

AND TO SEE HOW IT WORKS IN REAL LIFE… MORTON POINTS TO THE AMERICAN FOOD INDUSTRY.

HE SAYS IT MANIPULATES BACTERIA LEVELS IN ANIMALS BY FEEDING THEM ANTIBIOTICS…

"The only thing it does is upset that bacteria level which allows them to become bigger. That's how you get bigger cattle, bigger chickens… sometimes bigger pork."

NINE-YEAR OLD CASH MAY BE THE MOST SUSCEPTIBLE…

HE WAS BORN WITH KIDNEY PROBLEMS…

"…so he was on antibiotics from the day he was born for 3.5 years…"

AND SO WAS CATCHER.

SCHEVITZ SAYS SHE'LL KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON FUTURE STUDIES …

BUT FOR NOW, ALL SHE AND NICHOLSON SAY THEY CAN DO IS LISTEN TO THEIR GUT TO DO WHAT'S BEST FOR THEIR LITTLE ONES.

"Follow the mother's intuition, do what you think is best for your child." Return to index of stories...
