6:02 FIRST ALERT FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Warm, humid weekend with showers possible"

Very warm and humid weather will continue through the weekend as our wind flow keeps coming off the Gulf of Mexico.

Along with the warm and muggy air, we can expect a good chance of a passing shower or storm through the course of your Saturday.

The rain will tend to form near the coast and the urban corridor earlier in the day before the west coast sea breeze carries the bulk of the showers and storms inland this afternoon. With that said, a pop up storm will still be possible for those of us close to the coast and I-75 at any time since the atmosphere is so packed with moisture.

With a fair amount of sunshine around today, temperatures in most areas will peak in the low to mid 90s, and the heat index will be close to 100.

By tonight, a lot of the rain will diminish, but we can't rule out a stray shower. Otherwise, our sky will stay partly cloudy with lows in the mid to upper 70s.

Sunday will offer a similar forecast, featuring the potential for a few morning coastal showers with the bulk of the rain moving deep inland later in the day.

As we head into next week, a weak front will try to slowly dip into Central Florida, sending more moisture our way and bringing our rain chances up Tuesday and Wednesday.

In the tropics, Tropical Storm Helene will continue moving toward Mexico today and won't be a worry for Southwest Florida. Meanwhile in the open Atlantic, Gordon has strengthened into a hurricane this morning, but like Helene, Gordon is moving away from the U.S. and will not be an issue for us. There's also a new tropical wave to monitor just south of the Cape Verde Islands. Forecast models indicate this cluster of storms will have the potential to develop into the next named system of the season, Isaac. This system will keep moving west over the next seven days, and since it's over 3000 miles away from Southwest Florida, there's still plenty of time t watch it. Return to index of stories...

TAMPA POLICE PREP FOR RNC-PKG

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT TAMPA POLICE HOPE WON'T HAPPEN AT THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION. THIS DEMONSTRATION BY TPD TODAY SHOWS JUST HOW CRAZY THINGS CAN GET.

We've been preparing for a year-and-a-half, as I said, and a great deal of our success is going to be predicated on the relationships we have in law enforcement. Everybody has come together to prepare for this, and to ensure that it is a safe and secure event, and that it reflects very positively on the Tampa Bay area.

TAMPA POLICE CHIEF JENNY CASTOR SAYS THE CITY IS MORE THAN READY TO SERVE AND PROTECT DURING RNC. IN FRONT OF A PACKED HOUSE OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND BUSINESS LEADERS, CHIEF CASTOR AND HER TEAM -- AS WELL AS OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES -- SHOWCASED WHAT THEY'VE BEEN WORKING ON FOR MORE THAN 18 MONTHS, GIVING INSIGHT INTO SPECIFIC PROCEDURES THEY HAVE IN PLACE TO PROACTIVELY PROTECT THE AREA IN AND AROUND THE EVENT ZONE, AS WELL AS THE PLAN OF ACTION IF THINGS GET OUT OF CONTROL.

We don't anticipate that things will get out of hand. Again, its our sense of urgency, identifying those individuals that are bent on disruption and destruction, and getting them out of the crowd immediately.

WHILE LAW ENFORCEMENT CAN'T PREDICT EXACTLY WHAT WILL HAPPEN, THEY DO SAY THE PRESENCE OF 3,500 TO 4,000 OFFICIALS IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA WILL REALLY HELP. THEY WILL BE PREPARED FOR WHATEVER MAY HAPPEN AS THE WORLD WATCHES TAMPA IN LESS THAN A COUPLE WEEKS. Return to index of stories...

MADDISON KANE KNOWS HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOPPING.

THIS COLLEGE SOPHOMORE SPENT TODAY LOOKING THROUGH THE AISLE OF A LOCAL THRIFT STORE.

"50 percent of my wardrobe, I'd say is thrift store stuff so I've saved a lot of money."

SAVING BY PICKING UP VINTAGE AND DESIGNER NAMES AT A FRACTION OF RETAIL.

"And compared to stores like Forever 21 and Urban stuff, you can find the same stuff and it's like 90 percent cheaper."

PENNY PINCHING PARENTS KNOW KIDS CAN QUICKLY GROW OUT OF THEIR CLOTHES, SO LOOKING FOR BARGAINS AT THRIFT AND CONSIGNMENT STORES CAN HAVE A HUGE IMPACT IN SAVINGS ON THE FAMILY BUDGET.

"I think it's a great selection and then price wise you get at least, I would say 50 percent off if not more."

JUST LIKE THE MALLS, THIS GOODWILL STORE SAYS BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIME IS ONE OF THEIR BUSIEST OF THE YEAR. THEY SAY THRIFT STORE SHOPPERS INCLUDE ALL RANGES OF AGE, STYLE AND INCOME, THE ONE COMMON THREAD. THE DESIRE TO SAVE MONEY.

"No more than 20 bucks for an entire outfit. And that can include shoes and accessories and everything else."

"So how much can you expect to save at a thrift store? This gap dress shirt is selling for 4 dollars. These 7 jeans would probably cost you 100 dollars at a regular retail store, here they are 20 bucks."

BUT YOU CAN'T COUNT ON FINDING THOSE JEANS EVERY TIME YOU COME. IN FACT THE BEST ADVICE FOR BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING AT THE THRIFT STORE. YOU HAVE TO BE FLEXIBLE.

"Well that's part of the fun because you never know what you're going to find."

"You've got to be persistent because we turn over items every single day."

"You can't go with something in mind, cause if you go oh, i'm going to find a blazer today, you can't really do that." Return to index of stories...

6:42 FIRST ALERT FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

OVER THE LAST COUPLE WEEKS WE'VE SEEN A LOT OF OLYMPIANS WITH THEIR DREAMS EITHER FULFILLED OR SHATTERED.

ONE VIRGINIA WOMAN WAS AN OLYMPIC HOPEFUL, UNTIL AN ACCIDENT LEFT HER UNABLE TO WALK AND TALK.

SHE HAD BEEN AN ALTERNATE ON THE OLYMPIC EQUESTRIAN TEAM IN YEARS PAST, SO SHE HAD A REAL CHANCE TO FINALLY MAKE THE TEAM.

DOREEN GENTZLER SHARES HER STORY. Return to index of stories...

BACK IN THE SADDLE-PKG

"I was at the second to last jump and I made a mistake. The horse misread the jump and hit it and we both fell."

YOU CAN HEAR IT IN JAN BYYNY'S VOICE. THAT FATEFUL FALL SHE TOOK LAST YEAR, WAS MORE THAN A MISHAP. WHAT SHE THOUGHT WAS A "SIMPLE" BROKEN ARM, TURNED MUCH WORSE.

"All of a sudden, I couldn't talk. They knew right away something was going on."

SEVEN HOURS AFTER HER ACCIDENT, BYYNY WAS HAVING A STROKE.

"She landed in a way that caused her neck to become stretched and that caused a tear from the corrated artery that goes from the chest to brain."

BLOOD CLOTS FORMED IN THE TORN ARTERY AND TRAVELED TO HER BRAIN. CAUSING A STROKE IN AN AREA THAT CONTROLS LANGUAGE AND MOVEMENT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BODY. IT LEFT HER UNABLE TO WALK AND TALK.

AND DOCTORS SAID HER PROGNOSIS WAS GRIM.

"He said, your whole life is going to be different from now on. He said, you might not ever ride again and I was like, what do you mean, of course, I am."

BARELY 18 MONTHS LATER. BYYNY IS BACK IN THE SADDLE. SHE TOOK THAT SAME DETERMINATION THAT HELPED HER BECOME AN OLYMPIC-LEVEL ATHLETE AND USED IT FOR HER RECOVERY.

MEDSTAR NATIONAL REHABILITATION HOSPITAL DR. ALEXANDER DROMERICK WORKED ON HER REHABILITATION:

"Honestly, I was not expecting that she would return to this level of competition, but you know, she's a pretty tough, determined woman."

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY WASN'T EASY. IT INVOLVED RELEARNING A LOT OF THINGS SHE USED TO TAKE FOR GRANTED. ESPECIALLY TALKING.

"My mind goes much quicker than my mouth, so I have to make sure I really take my time."

AND REBUILDING ENOUGH STRENGTH TO RIDE AND JUMP WITH HER HORSE. SHE'S NOW AT THE SAME LEVEL SHE WAS BEFORE. EVEN COMPETING IN THE 20-12 OLYMPIC TRIALS. SHE DIDN'T MAKE THE TEAM THIS TIME, BUT SHE'S NOT GIVING UP."

"My hope for the future is to still compete at the international level. I'm not done yet, I can tell you that." Return to index of stories...

WET MAMMAL SHAKE-ONCAM

BEHOLD IN SLOW MOTION HOW DOGS SHAKE THEMSELVES DRY.

WET DOGS SHAKING HAVE LEFT RESEARCHERS SHAKING THEIR HEADS IN AWE.

JEANNE MOOS REPORTS IT'S BETTER THAN A BLOW DRY. Return to index of stories...

WET MAMMAL SHAKE-PKG

IT MAY NOT BE RESEARCH THAT'S EARTHSHAKING.

BUT IT'S DEFINITELY DOG-SHAKING. AND PIG SHAKING. AND EVEN RAT-SHAKING.

MOST OF US TRY TO AVOID GETTING SHOWERED BY THE DOG SHAKE.

BUT RESEARCHERS AT GEORGIA TECH DECIDED TO STUDY IT.

They can actually do a miraculous job of drying themselves

THEY USED A HIGH SPEED CAMERA TO RECORD THE SHAKES, RESULTING IN IMAGES SO STIRRING THAT THE JOURNAL NATURE PUT THEM TO WALTZ MUSIC.

A MOUSE SHAKES AROUND 30 TIMES PER SECOND.

They basically compensate for their size by shaking faster.

WHILE DOGS SHAKE ABOUT 4 TIMES A SECOND LEAVING THEM 70 PERCENT DRY WITHIN ONE TO 4 SECONDS.

Now we humans don't want loose flesh, but on a dog it comes in handy.

THAT LOOSE SKIN INCREASES THE SPEED AT WHICH THE WATER IS WHIPPED AWAY. WHILE THE DOG'S BACKBONE GOES BACK AND FORTH ONLY 30 DEGREES.

The skin goes 90 degrees right, 90 left. Only possible way it's loose enough to perform whipping action around the body.

INCREASING THE FORCE 9 TIMES. MAMMALS HAVE MASTERED WHAT DEVO PREACHED BACK IN THE 80S.

HEY, A VIGOROUS WHIPPING SURE BEATS SITTING UNDER THE BLOW DRYER. THE RESEARCHERS EVEN WENT TO THE ZOO AND RECORDED A LION. DR. DAVID HU SAYS FURRY MAMMALS PROBABLY DEVELOPED THE SHAKING MECHANISM TO AVOID STAYING WET AND GETTING HYPOTHERMIA. GOATS DO IT. EVEN SHEEP SHAKE.

The sheep has some style when it shakes

THE GEORGIA TECH TEAM EVEN MANAGED TO X-RAY SHAKING. THIS GUY LOOKS LIKE A RAT AT A DISCO.

Now maybe you think a big butt is easier to shake.

Oh they capture attention.

But try telling that to a kangaroo.

IT'S BUILT FOR HOPPING, NOT SHAKING.

It can't really shake. has this sort of large buttock and it can't really shake that around so it just shakes its head.

HEY, WHOSE BUTT YOU CALLING BIG?
