THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Warm, humid weekend with showers possible"
Very warm and humid weather will continue through the weekend as our wind flow keeps coming off the Gulf of Mexico.
Along with the warm and muggy air, we can expect a good chance of a passing shower or storm through the course of your Saturday.
The rain will tend to form near the coast and the urban corridor earlier in the day before the west coast sea breeze carries the bulk of the showers and storms inland this afternoon. With that said, a pop up storm will still be possible for those of us close to the coast and I-75 at any time since the atmosphere is so packed with moisture.
With a fair amount of sunshine around today, temperatures in most areas will peak in the low to mid 90s, and the heat index will be close to 100.
By tonight, a lot of the rain will diminish, but we can't rule out a stray shower. Otherwise, our sky will stay partly cloudy with lows in the mid to upper 70s.
Sunday will offer a similar forecast, featuring the potential for a few morning coastal showers with the bulk of the rain moving deep inland later in the day.
As we head into next week, a weak front will try to slowly dip into Central Florida, sending more moisture our way and bringing our rain chances up Tuesday and Wednesday.
In the tropics, Tropical Storm Helene will continue moving toward Mexico today and won't be a worry for Southwest Florida. Meanwhile in the open Atlantic, Gordon has strengthened into a hurricane this morning, but like Helene, Gordon is moving away from the U.S. and will not be an issue for us. There's also a new tropical wave to monitor just south of the Cape Verde Islands. Forecast models indicate this cluster of storms will have the potential to develop into the next named system of the season, Isaac. This system will keep moving west over the next seven days, and since it's over 3000 miles away from Southwest Florida, there's still plenty of time t watch it.

Return to index of stories...

AND TODAY, LEE COUNTY OFFICIALS, CONSERVATIONIST AND VOLUNTEERS HIT THE WATER TO COUNT THE CREATURES.
NBC2'S CLIFTON FRENCH IS LIVE AT THE PINELAND MARINA ON PINE ISLAND WHERE MORE THAN 150 VOLUNTEERS ARE JUST GETTING IN THE WATER.
LIVE:
ABOUT 40 BOATS, AND ABOUT 150 SNORKLERS ARE OUT HERE IN THE SOUND, SIMPLY COUNTING.
VO:
DECADES BACK, POOR WATER QUALITY AND DISAPPEARING SEAGRASS NEARLY KNOCKED OUT THE BAY-SCALLOP POPULATION.
TODAY, THE WATER QUALITY IS IMPROVING, SEAGRASSES ARE COMING BACK, AND SO ARE THE SCALLOPS, WHICH IS IMPORTANT FOR ANYONE LIVING NEAR THE WATER.
SOT:
"IF YOU EAT SEAFOOD, 70-90 PERCENT OF YOUR SEAFOOD IS GOING TO COME OUT OF A PLACE LIKE THIS WITH SEAGRASS AND MANGROVES, IT WILL HELP PROTECT AGAINST STORMSURGE, IT FILTERS WATER QUALITY WHICH ACTUALLY CAN IMPROVE AIR QUALITY." TRT: 17
RIGHT NOW VOLUNTEERS ARE JUST COUNTING SECTIONS OF THE BAY TO GET A SNAPSHOT OF THE POPULATION.
IF THE SCALLOP IS HEALTHY, THAT MEANS THE WATER QUALITY IS STILL IMPROVING.

THE NBC 2 INVESTIGATORS ARE DISCOVERING THE RISE IS COSTING FLORIDA TAX PAYERS.
INVESTIGATOR DAVE ELIAS LEARNED THE STATE HAS ALREADY BORROWED MILLIONS TO PAY ON THE CLAIMS.
Return to index of stories...
Jennifer White is among the more than 27-thousand unemployed people in Lee County alone who files here into the Florida Works office in hopes of landing a
job.
So is most of the surrounding area. Collier County has a 9.7% unemployment rate while charlotte is a little lower and DeSoto and Glades County
have even higher rates and Hendry County the highest at 16.1%. All of this costing the state millions. Representative Matt Caldwell tells me the
plan now is to pay back the federal government by 2013. He says borrowing the money allowed the state to pay on the claims without increasing
the tax rate on employers.many of which were forced to layoff people like Margaret Chapman.
And for many it has done just that.
But the latest numbers are an improvement.especially when you consider last year at this time the unemployment rate was 11.8%.
