WE START OUT IN THE ATLANTIC THIS AFTERNOON.

A NEW TROPICAL DEPRESSION IS FORMING AS WE SPEAK.

METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING IS TRACKING THE FORECAST - AND THE TROPICS FOR US.

JASON - GOOD AFTERNOON - Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER JASON-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Tracking higher rain chances Tuesday"

Today could be an interesting day in our world of weather as we're tracking a few items on the weather map this morning. First, we're monitoring a cluster of storms just south of Florida that's quickly spreading north, and we could very well see some of this hold together and push into southern portions of the viewing area before sunrise. The main impact from these cells will be gusty winds along with some heavy rain.

The next feature we're watching is a front that's stalling out over Central Florida, and while we don't expect the actual front to move into Southwest Florida, chances are high that some of the associated showers and storms will build southward into Southwest Florida by the afternoon. These storms, too, will have the potential to produce gusty winds along with heavy rain and frequent lightning. There's some degree of uncertainty in terms of how the storms to the north will evolve today, but it looks as though these will have at least have a good chance of impacting our northern counties.

With more moisture building in today, our sky will be cloudier than the last two days, and as a result, temperatures will be a little cooler with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s.

The third item we're keeping a close eye on is a tropical wave that could develop into Tropical Depression Nine later this morning. It's quickly moving toward the Lesser Antilles and should arrive there by Wednesday night. Forecast models continue to develop the system further in the next couple days, so this could be the next named storm of the season in the next couple days. The long-range forecast models are projecting this storm to moving toward Puerto Rica and Cuba later this week and potentially approaching south Florida early next week. The system's interaction with Cuba and Hispaniola will be critical in determining its strength, but the bottom line is this will be one to watch over the coming days. Return to index of stories...

LABOR DAY TRAVEL FORECAST-OC

THANKS JASON.

THE LONG LABOR DAY WEEKEND IS COMING UP - AND EVEN WITH RISING GAS PRICES AND A SLUGGISH ECONOMY, A NEW SURVEY FINDS MANY OF US - ARE READY TO PACK UP AND GO ON ONE LAST SUMMER FLING.

KARIN CAIFA REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

LABOR DAY TRAVEL FORECAST-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS --

THE LAST MAJOR TRAVEL HOLIDAY OF THE SUMMER IS EXPECTED TO BE A BUSY ONE.

ACCORDING TO A NEW FORECAST FROM TRIPLE-A, 33 MILLION AMERICANS WILL ENJOY A LABOR DAY WEEKEND GETAWAY AT LEAST 50 MILES FROM HOME. THAT'S AN INCREASE OF TWO-POINT-NINE PERCENT OVER LAST YEAR.

THEY'LL ALSO SPEND A LITTLE BIT MORE ON THEIR LONG WEEKENDS, 749 DOLLARS ON AVERAGE, UP FROM 702 IN 20-11.

THE AVERAGE TRIP WILL BE ABOUT 626 MILES. BUT ABOUT HALF OF TRAVELERS WILL STAY A LITTLE CLOSER TO HOME, BETWEEN 100 AND 400 MILES ROUND-TRIP.

2.3 MILLION AMERICANS WILL TRAVEL BY RAIL, BUS AND CRUISE SHIP.

2.5 MILLION WILL TAKE TO THE SKIES, THANKS TO A SLIGHT DIP IN AIRFARES.

AND THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF TRAVELERS WILL GO BY CAR -- 85 PERCENT OF THEM, OR ABOUT 28-POINT-TWO MILLION.

THAT'S DESPITE THE RECENT UPTICK IN GAS PRICES. GASOLINE IS STILL LOWER THAN AN APRIL PEAK OF 3-94 PER GALLON, BUT HIGHER THAN WHEN TRIPLE-A DID ITS LABOR DAY FORECASTING LAST AUGUST.

OF THOSE LOOKING TO TRIM TRAVEL COSTS MOST WILL SKIP HOTEL ROOMS AND STAY WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS. OTHERS WILL CUT THEIR TRIP A LITTLE SHORTER OR TAKE A LESS EXPENSIVE MODE OF TRANSPORTATION.

FOR CONSUMER WATCH, I'M KARIN CAIFA. Return to index of stories...

TWO TRUCKS HURTLING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WITH A WOMAN WALKING A LINE BETWEEN THE TWO, BARRELING TOWARDS A TUNNEL.

WILL SHE GET SPLATTERED IN WHAT LOOKS LIKE A SCENE RIGHT OUT A MOVIE LIKE MISSION IMPOSSIBLE.

OR WILL SHE SURVIVE LIKE TOM CRUISE.

AND WHO IS THIS WOMAN?

"Faith is nuts. And only a crazy person would try anything like this."

TAKE IT FROM THE DIRECTOR, HENRY ALEX RUBIN, WHO SHOT THIS LAST YEAR ON A BRAND NEW, HADN'T YET OPENED HIGHWAY IN CROATIA.

"Many countries said no before Croatia."

WHAT FAITH DICKEY IS DOING IS CALLED SLACKLINING.LIKE WALKING A TIGHTROPE ONLY SLACK AND BOUNCY.

"I've high-lined much higher than this before. I've high-lined longer lines in harsher winds but I've never slack-lined moving forward before."

SHE'S THE WOMEN'S WORLD RECORD HOLDER IN VARIOUS CATEGORIES OF SLACKLINING.. WHICH IS WHY THEY GOT HER FOR THIS, WHAT'S CALLED THE BALLERINA STUNT. THE OBJECT WAS TO GET ACROSS THE LINE BEFORE THE TRUCKS GOT TO THE TUNNEL.

SHE FELL ONCE. THEY DID 3 TAKES. FAITH WAS WEARING AN ANKLE SAFETY HARNESS.

"THE QUESTION IS WHAT IS THIS AN AD FOR?"

IS IT FOR SHOES? IS IT FOR THE CAMERA ON HER HEAD? NOPE, IT'S FOR TRUCKS.

VOLVO TRUCKS. PRETTY RISKY FOR A BRAND ASSOCIATED WITH SAFETY. AS ONE OF THE PRECISION DRIVERS REMARKS.

"Too far apart, the rope breaks. too near together, she falls off."

THE TRUCKS HEADED FOR THE TUNNEL AT A TOP SPEED OF ABOUT 50 MILES PER HOUR.

SOME THOUGHT MORE THAN THE ROPE WAS BEING STRETCHED. FAKETASTIC.MEGA FAKE.POSTERS SAID. TO WHICH THE DIRECTOR REPLIED.

"A little Hollywood editing makes everything seem more exciting and obviously we cut 3 takes together."

BUT RUBIN SAYS SHE CAME WITHIN SECONDS OF THE TUNNEL ENTRANCE.

"She did do it. she did that stunt. and it was pretty sick. I mean the crew applauded her afterwards."

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS --

"THIS HOUSE WAS THE END OF THE TRAIL FOR A GANGSTER AND HIS MOM ON JANUARY 16, 1935. AND NOW ALMOST 80 YEARS LATER, IT'S UP FOR SALE."

"They wanted to rent a house out here in this area."

"The chair when you turn it around, it still has the bullet holes in the back of the chair."

YOU'RE INSIDE WHAT WAS ONCE A GANGSTER'S "SWANKY HIDEOUT" -- A TWO THOUSAND SQUARE FOOT LAKE FRONT HOME WHERE IN 1935, MA BARKER AND HER SON FRED WERE KILLED IN THE LONGEST GUN BATTLE IN F-B-I HISTORY.

"From what we understand, Fred Barker would run from room to room here, and shoot out different windows in an effort to try and confuse the FBI."

OVER 15-HUNDRED ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION POURED INTO THE HOUSE FOR SIX HOURS.

THE BARKER BODIES WERE FOUND HERE.

"Two people were shot to death inside this house-- is that at all a concern of yours, you're trying to sell this house. ya know, some might think it kinda gives them the heebie-jeebies?"

"That's entirely possible and some folks might have difficulty in staying in the house. We're marketing the historical value of the house."

THE BULLET HOLES HAVE BEEN PATCHED UP, BUT EVERY THING HERE HAS BEEN PRESERVED SINCE THE SHOOTOUT.

"Fred has moved on, but they say Ma is still here."

RUMOR HAS IT- THE HOUSE IS HAUNTED.

OTHER'S SAY THE BANK ROBBERS' STOLEN LOOT-- IS STILL HIDDEN IN THE WALLS.

"Been around the house, under the house looking for money, my grandkids digging up holes, thinking they're going to find something."

"haven't found anything yet?"

"No."

BUT IF YOU WANT TO CONTINUE THE SEARCH, THIS HOUSE CAN BE YOUR FOR A COOL MILLION. Return to index of stories...

WELCOME TO PRAGUE. HOME OF THE NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE INFANT JESUS AND OF COURSE, THE KOLACHE FESTIVAL.

BUT ON THIS FIRST DAY BACK TO SCHOOL, THE TOWN IS BECOMING MORE WIDELY KNOWN FOR SOMETHING ELSE.

"That four-letter word is what got me in trouble, so."

AS KAITLIN NOOTBAAR SETTLES IN TO HER FRESHMAN DORM AT SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY. SHE'S GETTING CALLS. LITERALLY FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. SUPPORTING HER QUEST TO GET HER HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA.

"I did not think it would get that big at all."

DURING KAITLIN'S GRADUATION SPEECH, SHE TALKED ABOUT PEOPLE ASKING HER WHAT SHE WANTS TO BE.

"You know they're going to ask us what we want to be and we're going to say, 'Who the hell knows,' and that's it."

KAITLIN'S WORDS MIRRORED ANOTHER GRADUATION SPEECH FROM ONE OF THE "TWILIGHT" MOVIES.

"Who the hell knows?"

LAST WEEK, KAITLIN'S FATHER DESCRIBED THE REACTION FROM HER HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL.

"Went to the office and asked for the diploma and he says, 'Your diploma is right here but you ain't getting it.' Close the door; we have a problem."

THE PRINCIPAL TOLD HER SHE COULD NOT HAVE HER DIPLOMA UNLESS SHE WROTE A LETTER OF APOLOGY FOR USING THE WORD "HELL" IN HER SPEECH.

"I don't want to because I'm not sorry, so writing an apology letter, that's just going to be a lie. Which if they're saying that my cursing is sinning, that would be another sin, so don't want to have two sins on my hands."

KAITLIN'S DILEMMA HAS GONE VIRAL; CNN, THE HUFFINGTON POST, MSNBC AND THE NEW YORK POST ALL PICKING UP THE STORY.

TOWNS PEOPLE ABUZZ ABOUT THE CONTROVERSY. WEIGHING IN ON THE CURSING DEBATE.

"I think that's absurd. A lot of people say 'hell' and I'm sorry but she's graduated. Give her her diploma, let her go on her way."

"There's other things in this world that are more important and she's a valedictorian. She earned her diploma, she should get it, without an apology."

KAITLIN HOPES THE DISTRICT CHANGES ITS MIND.

BUT FOR NOW, WILL FOCUS ON HER MAJOR OF MARINE BIOLOGY.

BUT SAYS THAT COULD CHANGE.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

RADIATION THERAPY-CLIP OC

ON THE MEDICAL FRONT THIS AFTERNOON,

THERE'S A NEW RADIATION THERAPY THAT COULD HELP BREAST CANCER PATIENTS.

BARBARA MORSE SILVA TAKES A CLOSER LOOK. Return to index of stories...

RADIATION THERAPY-PKG

IT'S CALLED THE ACCUBOOST SYSTEM. IT DELIVERS RADIATION TO TREAT BREAST CANCER.

"We've been using it the past three or four years to deliver the boost portion of whole breast treatment."

NOW IT'S BEING USED IN A NEW WAY.RHODE ISLAND HOSPITAL TESTING IT TO TREAT ONLY THE PORTION OF THE BREAST WHERE THE CANCER IS FOUND. FOLLOWING THE REMOVAL OF THE CANCER. PARTIAL BREAST CANCER RADIATION IS NOT NEW BUT.

"Most of the techniques are invasive. We either have to put multiple needles in to the breast or a catheter in to the lumpectomy cavity and that needs to remain in place for the whole course of treatment which is about a week."

DR. JAROSLAW HEPEL SAYS FOR THE WOMAN, IT CAN BE INCONVENIENT, UNCOMFORTABLE AND THERE'S A RISK OF INFECTION.

"What's nice about the accuboost system is that it's not invasive, there's nothing that's placed inside the breast but we're able to achieve the same level of precision as these invasive approaches."

IT STARTS WITH MAMMOGRAPHY-LIKE IMAGING.

"With this approach we actually immobilize the breast by compressing it gently and image the breast for each and every treatment. That's how we're able to see the lumpectomy cavity and target it very precisely for each treatment."

THAT RADIATION DELIVERED THROUGH CATHETER LIKE WIRES THROUGH THIS DEVICE. PRECISELY TO THE SPOT. THE EXPECTATION THAT WOMEN WILL HAVE FEWER SIDE EFFECTS AND BETTER COSMETIC OUTCOMES. THE HOPE? THIS NON INVASIVE TREATMENT WILL BECOME THE STANDARD OF CARE.

"Patients who are eligible for this study are women over the age of 50 who have early stage breast cancer who've undergone a wide local excision of their tumor." Return to index of stories...
