BREAKING NEWS.THE BRAND NEW ELEVEN A-M UPDATE ON TROPICAL STORM ISAAC IS OUT.

ALL OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA IS WATCHING ITS MOVEMENT AS WE REMAIN INSIDE THE CONE.

METEOROLOGIST KIRA MINOR IS TRACKING THE STORM AND THE BRAND NEW ADVISORY. Return to index of stories...

ISSAC WX-WX WALL

Through the day today, there will be the chance for showers and storms to work their way ashore and head inland at any time today. It will be another hot and humid day today with high temperatures headed to near 93 degrees.

There is also activity in the tropics. Tropical Storm Isaac is nearly two thousand miles away from Southwest Florida, but it's quickly moving toward the Lesser Antilles and should arrive there tonight. Forecast models continue to strengthen the system Thursday and Friday, and it could potentially develop into a Category 1 hurricane by then.

One of the keys in determining how strong the storm will get is its interaction with Cuba and Hispaniola, where 10,000 foot mountains have been known to rip hurricanes apart. The system's interaction with Cuba and Hispaniola will be critical in determining its strength, and just a change of 50 miles could make all the difference. It's just too early to resolve the finer details at this point.

The bottom line is TS Isaac will be a storm to watch closely for anyone in South Florida, and IF this storm were to affect our weather, it would most likely be early next week around Monday or Tuesday. Return to index of stories...

FLASHBACK TO 1992 HURRICANE ANDREW WREAKED HAVOC ON SOUTH FLORIDA. THE DEADLY STORM FLATTENED ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOODS, HOMES REDUCED TO PILES OF RUBBLE.

FAST-FORWARD 20 YEARS LATER AND THERE'S A BIG PROJECT UNDERWAY AT THE FIU HURRICANE RESEARCH CENTER TO HELP MAKE HOMES BUILDINGS AND BRIDGES STRONGER. THE UNIVERSITY HAS BEEN USING THESE OLD FANS TO PRODUCE HURRICANE FORCE WINDS BUT NOW THEY'RE TRADING UP.

AND TALK ABOUT A BIG UPGRADE HERE'S A LOOK AT THE NEW SYSTEM THE WALL OF WIND ON THE FIU CAMPUS YOU SEE IT GOING RIGHT THERE -- IT'S COMPOSED OF 12 DIFFERENT WIND TURBINES EACH ONE WITH A DIAMETER OF ABOUT SIX FEET. HERE'S A LOW SPEED WIND TEST RIGHT HERE THE WINDS GUSTING RIGHT NOW AT ANYWHERE FROM 15 TO 20 MILES PER HOUR.

THE WALL OF WIND AS ITS CALLED CAN NOW CREATE CATEGORY FIVE STRENGTH WINDS UP TO 157 MILES PER HOUR. TO DEMONSTRATE THE POWER OF THE NEW FANS TWO HOMES WERE BUILT. THE FIRST HOME TO THE BUILDING CODES IN PLACE BEFORE HURRICANE ANDREW. THE SECOND DEMO HOME BUILT TO THE CODES THAT ARE IN PLACE TODAY.

YOU CAN SEE AT CAT FIVE WINDS JUST LIKE IN HURRICANE ANDREW TOPPING 160 MPH MORE OF THE SHINGLES.AND THE ROOF SHEETING RIPS OFF THE PRE ANDREW HOME. THE POST ANDREW HOME THE ROOF REMAINS MORE IN TACT.

This facility allows you to see ahead and see how structures will really behave in a Category five Hurricane.

THE SCIENTISTS HOPE WITH THIS WALL OF WIND THEY CAN MAKE STRUCTURES STRONGER AND KEEP CATASTROPHIC SCENES LIKE THIS ONE FROM ANDREW FROM HAPPENING AGAIN IN CITIES AND COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD.

We have come a long way after Hurricane Andrew we have changed the building codes, with this system we can test those kind of buildings, the roof and the wall and the windows to see again the weak links. Return to index of stories...

AIRLINES SMALLER SEATS-PKG

AIRLINES AND TRAVELERS ARE FEELING THE SQUEEZE.

"It's getting a little tight for everyone."

BUT IN DIFFERENT WAYS. FOR PASSENGERS.

"They're getting more and more compact with the space. Definitely, more people on, make us all in there feel like, as they say, cattle car."

FOR AIRLINES IT'S THEIR BOTTOM LINE. MANY CARRIERS ARE STARTING TO USE NEW THINNER SEATS TO PACK MORE PEOPLE ONTO PLANES.

"Passengers are not willing to pay the true cost of airfare and airlines have no other option but to squeeze more passengers into their aircraft, into economy class. That's what they are using these slim seats for. They are able to add an additional row of seats in economy."

MORE ROWS, EQUAL MORE DOLLARS. THE AVERAGE SEAT PITCH, WHICH IS THE DISTANCE BETWEEN ONE POINT ON A SEAT TO THE SAME POINT IN FRONT, IS AROUND 30-32 INCHES ON MOST MAJOR AIRLINES. SOUTHWEST IS SHRINKING THEIR SEAT PITCH AN INCH, BUT THEY SAY A NEW SLIMMER SEAT DESIGN ACTUALLY GIVES PASSENGERS MORE SPACE. SPIRIT HAS BEEN USING LIGHTERWEIGHT SEATS THEY SAY ARE PRE-RECLINED AND CAN'T BE ADJUSTED SINCE 2010. BUT COMFORT IS KEY ESPECIALLY FOR LONGER FLIGHTS.

"Like, I'm going to Las Vegas so, yah, its a long fight and absolutely uncomfortable. Gets cramped, my legs start burning."

"FOR PEOPLE SICK OF AIRPORTS OR AIR TRAVEL, THE TRAIN IS ALWAYS ANOTHER OPTION. HERE, ON AN AMTRAK TRAIN, THE SEAT PITCH IS ABOUT 40 INCHES. IN A CAR THERE ARE MANY FACTORS BUT WITH THE FRONT SEAT PULLED BACK, THE SEAT PITCH IS ABOUT 32 INCHES. AND THINGS AREN'T THAT GLAMOROUS OR SPACIOUS HERE IN THE WHITE HOUSE BRIEFING ROOM. THE SEAT PITCH HERE IS 34 INCHES."

ON PLANES, THERE'S ALSO THAT OTHER DREADED FACTOR, THE RANDOMNESS OF THE SEATING PROCESS.

"Well I have to admit I don't like it. Cause it's hard to stay off of one another. And nobody wants somebody they don't know all over them, so, you know, it's tough." Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
