NBC2 IS TRACKING THE TROPICS!

NBC2 SENIOR CHIEF METEOROLOGIST ROBERT VAN WINKLE IS TRACKING ISAAC--

ROBERT.
Return to index of stories...
The weather story today is Tropical Storm Isaac and its potential impacts on Southwest Florida.
Tropical Storm Isaac continues to pack winds of 45 mph and continues on a westerly track at 21 mph. It will be passing over the Leeward Islands this evening, while staying to South of Puerto Rico. As conditions become a bit more favorable, development into a category one hurricane is possible by early Friday morning as it bares down on Hispaniola. As it has more interaction with land and even some mountainous terrain over Cuba, Isaac should start to weaken possibly back into the a Tropical Storm, before it regenerates back into the category one hurricane while moving through the Florida Straits. There's still alot of uncertainty when it comes to Isaac's path. The bottom line is Tropical Storm Isaac will be a storm to watch closely for anyone in South Florida, and IF this storm were to affect our weather, it would most likely be early next week around Monday or Tuesday.

TROPICAL STORM ISAAC POSES A VERY REAL THREAT TO THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION.
IT'S SLATED TO BEGIN MONDAY!
TAMPA'S MAYOR SAYS HE IS READY TO TAKE "DRASTIC ACTION"
"Well, absolutely we're prepared to call it off. I mean, human safety and human life trumps politics. I think the RNC recognizes that. The organizers, certainly Governor Romney recognizes that. Whatever we do will be based on getting people out of harm's way. Politics will take second place.
GOVERNOR SCOTT IS ALSO RE-ASSURING FLORIDIANS ABOUT THE CONVENTION.
HE SAYS "FLORIDA'S STATE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT TEAM AND LOCAL EMERGENCY TEAMS--
HAVE BEEN WORKING CLOSELY WITH CONVENTION OFFICIALS--
AND HAVE BEEN PLANNING FOR SUCH A SCENARIO FOR MORE THAN A YEAR."
NEARLY 2-MILLION PEOPLE IN THE TAMPA AREA--
ANOTHER 50-THOUSAND ARE HEADED THERE FOR THE CONVENTION.

THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE WANTS TO AVOID A STORM WITH THE KEY SWING STATE OF FLORIDA.
*ALL* DELEGATES WILL BE SEATED ON THE FLOOR OF THE CONVENTION.
THE R-N-C IS BACKING OFF *SOME PENALTIES IMPOSED AFTER FLORIDA SHOOK UP THE PRIMARY CALENDAR.
NBC-2 CHIEF POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT CHAD OLIVER IS HERE WITH REACTION FROM OUR LOCAL G-O-P DELEGATION.

THE INITIAL PENALTY STRIPPED FLORIDA OF HALF OF ITS ONE HUNDRED DELEGATES.
ONLY FIFTY WILL GET TO VOTE.
THE R-N-C WOULDN'T BUDGE ON THAT.
BUT WITH MITT ROMNEY BEING THE PRESUMED NOMINEE - THOSE VOTES ARE JUST A FORMALITY.
THE BIG DEAL FOR FLORIDA'S DELEGATES - ALL ONE HUNDRED GET TO BE PART OF THE ACTION ON THE FLOOR.
Return to index of stories...
"If you are a delegate you will be seated with the delegation on the floor of the convention."
COLLIER COUNTY'S G-O-P CHAIR GOT THE NEWS VIA EMAIL. COME MONDAY - HE'LL BE INSIDE THE TAMPA BAY TIMES FORUM. IF NOT WITH A VOTE - AT LEAST A SEAT ON THE FLOOR.
"Whether it counts or not i'm going to be on the floor and that's super exciting."
IF A CONVENTION IS LIKE A CONCERT. THEN THIS NAPLES DOCTOR JUST LANDED A PART OF THE SHOW.
You're in the band in a way, you a part of the action, you're on the floor.
"And these incredible screens behind me."
THIS WEEK THE HEAD OF THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE UNVEILED THE STAGE WHERE MITT ROMNEY WILL ACCEPT HIS PARTY'S NOMINATION. JUST LAST MONTH - HE TOLD ME FLORIDA'S PENALTIES WOULD STICK.
"There's nothing that can be done. They can't get their delegates back.
ONE PENALTY YET TO BE DETERMINED COULD BE FLOOR ASSIGNMENTS.
THIS IS HOW THE G-O-P CONVENTION FLOOR LOOKED FOUR YEARS IN MINNEAPOLIS.
THE HOST STATE, MINNESOTA, IN A PRIME SPOT CLOSE TO THE STAGE. FLORIDA - PENALIZED THEN AS WELL - A LITTLE FARTHER BACK.
"I guess we're going to be seated toward the back but I don't really care it doesn't make any difference to me."
LEVIGNE KIRKPATRICK FROM NAPLES WILL BE IN TAMPA AS AN ALTERATE DELEGATE.
"My role is to keep us going and to keep people unified."
So that's pretty good news.
BACK AT PARTY HEADQUARTERS. DOCTOR SCHWERIN HOPES THE R-N-C EVENTUALLY CHANGES THE PRIMARY CALENDER SO LARGER STATES LIKE FLORIDA VOTE EARLIER. AND AVOID MORE POLITICAL PENALTIES.
:07:41:05
That really doesn't matter. What matters is, we are going to be a nominating the next President of the United States all that other stuff is just window dressing." 10

A new report finds Americans are throwing out nearly every other bite of
food.
MOS
MOS
According to and new study from the Natural Resources Defense Council, we
end up wasting up to 40 percent of the country's food supply each year.
That includes 165 billion dollars worth of produce and meats.
SOT DANA GUNDERS-NATURAL RESOURCES DEFENSE COUNCIL
You know no matter how sustainably we grow our food. if we are not
actually eating it is terrible use of our resources.
The group found a family of four squanders $2,275 in food each year, or 20
pounds per person per month.
The waste is especially alarming during a time of record drought, high food
prices expected to get higher and families unable to afford food.
The Council says food gets wasted in several areas along the line, not just
at the dinner table.
SOT DOCTOR BESSER
Dept of agriculture that's buying a lot of food. it's subsidizing food.
you have industry that's making food. you have consumers who are buying
food. there is no one group saying here is the amount of food that you
should have and here is how it should be distributed.
Still, most waste takes place in stores and homes--and the NRDC suggests
ways to curb it.
SOT DANA GUNDERS-NATURAL RESOURCES DEFENSE COUNCIL
We can start in our own refrigerator by making sure we are using up what's
in there.also by planning our shopping wisely/in supermarkets I'd love
to see adjusted promotion. instead of buy one get one free for a gallon of
milk who can drink 2 gallons of milk. in the United Kingdom they are
experimenting with other promotions like buy one get one later.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
The weather story today is Tropical Storm Isaac and its potential impacts on Southwest Florida. As of this afternoon, Isaac is moving across the Leeward Islands and will not have any impact on our local weather during the short term. For the rest of the afternoon, expect a mix of sun and clouds with the chance for an isolated storm or two through the evening hours. Otherwise, skies will go partly cloudy tonight with lows in the middle 70s by morning.
We'll keep a few showers and storms in the forecast for Thursday and Friday with highs in the lower to middle 90s.
There's still alot of uncertainty when it comes to Isaac's path. CARS STREAMING DOWN FOWLER STREET IN FORT MYERS PASS UNDER ONE OF LEE COUNTY'S NINE NEW ELECTRONIC MESSAGE BOARDS.
usually it does show some messages it says "buckle up" or "emergency broadcast test"
NO ALERT TODAY--
BUT FANNY MEJIA SAYS THE SIGN LOOKS LIKE AN EASY WAY TO GET TRAFFIC UPDATES TO DRIVERS.
i'm hoping we'll have some information from there
BUT WHAT KIND OF INFORMATION?? WITH TROPICAL STORM ISAAC APPROACHING- WE ASKED THE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION HOW THEY'D USE THE SIGNS DURING AN EMERGENCY.
will they be used in an emergency situation such as a hurricane evacuation? They would be used if we actually get to the point of closing the bridge
CLOSING THE EDISON OR HIGHWAY 41 BRIDGES-- ACCORDING TO COUNTY TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR DAVE LOVELAND.
THAT HAPPENS WHEN WINDS REACH 45 MILES PER HOUR.
Nats sign/cars
LOVELAND SAYS THAT'S THE ONLY REASON THEY'D USE THE SIGNS--
SIGNS THAT COST TAXPAYERS FIVE POINT SIX MILLION DOLLARS.
why'd we spend that much money if it wouldn't have evacuation information on it? I'm not sure what evacuation information you could put on it you can't have a lot of details on there while people are driving you don't want to distract them too much
LOVELAND SAYS THE STATE INTENDED THE SIGNS ONLY TO ALERT PEOPLE WHEN A BRIDGE CLOSES--
THOUGH MEJIA SEES MORE POTENTIAL.
I would think it would be a great tool, especially with all the traffic and accidents that we have on this street
OFFICIALS HAD THE SIGNS RUNNING EARLY THIS SUMMER-- SO SHOULD A STORM CLOSE BRIDGES -- IT'D PUT THE NEW HARDWARE TO THE TEST.
