FIRST FORECAST-WX WALL

ALL EYES ON ISAAC

Tropical Storm Isaac has started its path to the northwest.

Haiti is not hindering Isaac at all, and that leaves a window for further strengthening before hitting Cuba. Isaac's maturing will indeed be tampered by Cuba, but the question is how much?

We do know one thing - once it hits the Florida Straits and the Gulf of Mexico - it will regain strength. Could we be dealing with a CAT 1 hurricane by early next week? Yes.

Models have been trending to the west with Isaac's track, but today they have shifted east considerably. Four reliable models bring Isaac very close to southwest Florida and each model only differs within 50 miles of one another. It bears watching.

Don't let your guard down. Impacts of a tropical system can be felt up to 200 miles from the center.

If you do not have a plan… The time to make one is now. You can't wait until Sunday.

Our weather tomorrow will be fine, a decent amount of sunshine and a couple of stray showers.

The changes begin Sunday.

The clouds will increase, the winds will become more brisk, and, come the evening hours, we're seeing outer rain bands.

Isaac will be felt from Sunday night into Monday night.

It's a process, and again, do not focus on the "center."

Things can change, and this system needs to be monitored closely. Please refer to NBC2 on-air and online for the latest information. Return to index of stories...

It began as just a normal busy day in one of new york city's most crowded

tourist areas, when all of a sudden. Shots rang out.

Witness: I HEARD MULTIPLE GUNSHOTS I SAY ABOUT 12 OF THEM AND I THOUGHT

THERE WERE FIRECRACKERS AT FIRST. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON EVERYBODY

STARTED RUNING FOR COVER

Police have identified the suspected gunman as Jeffery Johnson. A former

clothing designer who had been laid off from Hazan Imports a year ago.

Today Johnson allegedly went back to confront his old employer.. police

say he took out a gun and shot a former colleague three times, then turned

and fled up 5th avenue

A construction worker nearby followed him and alerted police, who shot and

killed Johnson after he turned his gun at them

Kelley sot: "He pulled his 45 caliber semi-automatic pistol from his bag and

fired on the officers who returned fire, killing him. An additional 9

individuals were either wounded or grazed during the exchange."

Witnesses say the police were on the scene within seconds. New York mayor

Michael Bloomberg says their quick response may have saved lives

Bloomberg sot: Everyday, our police officers put their lives on the line to

protect us. They did so again today, responding immediately. And they were

joined by a number of civilians whose bravery and assistance probably also

saved lives. Return to index of stories...

Judy and Carol Koe, Live in Cape Coral

0611 "if issac becomes a hurricane, we'll evacuate."

Steve campion, reporter "since hurricane andrew, the way builders construct roofs has radically changed. In this case, the roof is tied to steel rods which run down these walls and into the homes foundation."

Joseph Francioni, CCCIA board member

5442 "you have individual straps for each individual piece into the trestle."

Homebuilder joe Francioni explains -- current code -- means this cape coral house must withstand 130mph winds and gusts up to 160 Mphs.

Francioni, CCCIA board member

5329 "the codes have just been updated again this year. Every two years, they go through a supplemental update. They take into effect where the structures are even located for the winds they must protect against."

In this video from the international hurricane research center -- you can see the difference in today's roofs compared to those before.

Judy and Carol Koe, Live in Cape Coral

1024 "I guess it's as good as its going to be but obviously if it blew down. We'd have to build it to code."
