TRACKING TROPICAL STORM ISAAC.
AS THE STORM MOVES PAST SOUTHWEST FLORIDA THE SHIFT FOCUSES TO ALABAMA AND LOUISIANA.
WE EXPECT TO HEAR GOVERNOR SCOTT SPEAK LIVE IN A COUPLE OF MINUTES ON THE LATEST FOR PEOPLE HERE IN FLORIDA.
BUT FIRST LET'S START WITH NBC2'S JIM REIF WITH THE LATEST STORM MODELS.
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
"Tropical Storm Isaac skirting by SWFL"
We'll still be feeling the fringe effects of Isaac through the day as the storm skirts by to our west, but weather conditions are expected to gradually improve through the day.
The center of Isaac will stay a couple hundred miles offshore, but the storm's circulation and moisture will be far reaching enough to bring in some off and on showers this morning and even this afternoon.
While the threat of severe weather should stay on the low side, there's still some concern for isolated tornadoes as broken bands of rain continue to spiral around Isaac and into Southwest Florida. A Tornado Watch is in effect for Southwest Florida through 9 a.m., and this may be extended later depending on how the tornado threat plays out.
As far as our winds go, we'll still experience breezy and gusty conditions today with peak winds reaching 40-45 mph. Sustained winds should stay between 10-20 mph. During the first half of the day, our winds will be out of the southeast but will then shift to the south and southwest through the afternoon. With a strong onshore flow expected later, we'll see the possibility of higher than normal tides and a surge of 2-4 feet. The areas most susceptible for surge will be locations from Marco Island to Everglades City, where the surge may be on the higher end of that range.
By tonight our winds will subside, but we'll notice a stiff breeze at times. A few passing showers will also be possible as we go through the overnight hours, especially for areas close to the coast.
Winds will continue to die down Tuesday, but some of Isaac's wrap-around moisture will still spark scattered showers and even a few thunderstorms during the afternoon
We'll notice a fair about of cloud cover today and Tuesday, but sunshine should also mix in through the day as the cloud clover becomes more broken.
Isaac's moisture will become less and less evident around here for the second half of the week as we get more sun with just a few hit-or-miss showers.
By the upcoming weekend, our weather will return to "normal" for late summer in Southwest Florida. We'll see more sun, highs in the 90s, and some scattered afternoon storms.

SOME POSITIVE NEWS ON THE CONSUMER FRONT THIS AFTERNOON.
ACCORDING TO A NATIONAL STUDY, MORE PEOPLE ARE MAKING THEIR CAR PAYMENTS, THEN THEY HAVE IN THE LAST 13 YEARS.
BOB HANSEN TAKES A LOOK.
Return to index of stories...
THIS IS A GOOD TIME ON THE CAR LOT, SALES ARE UP AND INTEREST RATES ARE DOWN.
"The incentives that the car dealerships are doing now are the inspiration for the business doing so well now."
IN FACT VETERAN CAR SALESMAN J-P BO SAYS HE'S NEVER SEEN INTEREST RATES THIS LOW AT HIS HONDA DEALERSHIP.
"During the tough times people are holding their cars, no their loosening up and they're coming in with these great rates."
NOT ONLY ARE PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE BUYING. BUT THEY ARE MAKING THEIR PAYMENTS. ACCORDING TO TRANSUNION, DELINQUINCY RATES ON CAR PAYMENTS ARE AT A 13-YEAR LOW.
"I just feel very optimistic about the business right now."
"I think people today know that they really have to pay off their debt."
MARKETING PROFESSOR GEORGE BELCH SAYS THAT CONSUMERS ARE WISER THESE DAYS WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR CREDIT AND IF THEY WANT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF LOWER INTEREST RATES, THEY NEED TO SHOW THEY CAN BE TRUSTED.
"Credit has become tighter. so what we're seeing is the loans are more qualified, their credit scores are rpobably better, they're in a better position to pay off these loans."
AND WHAT ARE THEY PAYING? CAR LOANS IN SOME CASES ARE BEING PAID BEFORE SOME PEOPLE MAKE CREDIT CARD AND HOSUE PAYMENTS. THOSE CAR LOANS ARE OFTEN THE CHEAPEST OPTION.
"And then there's the issue of reposession, if you don't make your payments it's a little easier to take your car than your house."
"They need their cars. They need it to take their kids to school, they need it for work, they need it for pleasure and it doesn't surprise me one bit."
IF PEOPLE KEEP MAKING THEIR PAYMENTS. IT MEANS BETTER CREDIT SCORES AND POTENTIALLY MORE CARS LEAVING THE LOT.

ATHLETES ARE BIG, STRONG AND POWERFUL.
THEY PUSH THEMSELVES TO BE THE BEST.
SOME EVEN TAKE SUPPLEMENTS, WHICH ARE LEGAL, TO STAY AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME.
MANY DO IT, WITH IT OUT KNOWING THE CONSEQUENCES.
TEN HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS, LEARNED THEIR LESSON THE HARD WAY.
"I would be concerned as a parent."
WISCONSIN INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION DEPUTY DIRECTOR WADE LABECKI SAYS PLAYERS WERE SUSPENDED FOR THREE GAMES AFTER TAKING A PRODUCT CALLED "CELL-U-CORE."
IT PROMISED BIGGER MUSCLES FASTER.
BUT WHAT THE PLAYERS DIDN'T KNOW IS THE PRODUCT CONTAINS "SYNEPHRINE." -WHICH IS BANNED BY THE WIAA, THE NCAA AND THE NFL.
"This product has been associated with many problems where there is no blood flow, like stroke, like heart attack, like ischemic gut, things that no one wants."
DR. GREG PLOTNIKOFF SAYS THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT PROVES PRODUCTS LIKE CELL-U-CORE ACTUALLY WORK.
"This is our number one seller it's been our flagship product for years."
ANIKA DECOSTER IS A REGISTERED DIETITIAN.
SHE BELIEVES SUPPLEMENTS LIKE VITAMINS CAN BE BENEFICIAL FILLING IN NUTRITIONAL GAPS.
"Our population we're not really eating what we're designed to eat."
BUT SHE WARNS POWER-PROMISING-PRODUCTS MAY NOT GIVE YOU THE A BIGGER, BUFFER BODY.
DECATOR SAYS BEFORE YOU PUT ANYTHING IN YOUR BODY, READ THE LABELS AND DO YOUR RESEARCH.
"There's unique ingredients that make people feel bloated or make people feel stronger and it's not necessarily doing anything. That's where I tell people when you're first getting into this stick with the core products because if you're getting enough protein and enough strength training in you're going to get and see those results."
LABECKI SAYS WHAT HAPPENED IN MENOMINEE HAPPENS TOO OFTEN WITH YOUNG ATHLETES AND HE HOPES OTHERS WILL LEARN FROM IT.
"We're worried about the competitive edge that somebody might gain by using some of these supplements and some of these products but it's also we're worried about the growing, developing adolescent body and the long term effects that this stuff might have."

TURNS OUT YOU COULD BE WAKING UP SMARTER THAN THE DAY BEFORE.
BECAUSE YOU LEARN WHILE YOU SLEEP!
RESEARCHERS PLAYED A TONE WHEN ADULTS WERE SLEEPING.
THEY FOLLOWED THAT TONE WITH A PLEASANT OR UNPLEASANT SMELL.
THE ADULTS REACTED TO THAT TONE WHEN THEY WERE AWAKE.
INHALING BECAUSE THEY EXPECTED A PLEASANT SMELL.
OR CUTTING THEIR BREATHING SHORT FOR A BAD SMELL.
