FIRST WEATHER JIM-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Hurricane Isaac is meandering slowly near and over the coastline of Louisiana this morning. Large amounts of rain, strong winds and storm surge will all be problems along the northern Gulf Coast due to Isaac. This system will be a slow mover making those effects last longer.

As far as the tropics, we've already talked about Isaac. There is also Tropical Storm Kirk, but this one is in the mid-Atlantic and won't have any impact on Southwest Florida. There is another tropical wave almost 600 miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. This is one that we will be tracking for a number of days. It does have a medium chance for development in the next couple of days. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Our Weather Returning to "Normal"

Hurricane Isaac is meandering slowly near and over the coastline of Louisiana this morning. Large amounts of rain, strong winds and storm surge will all be problems along the northern Gulf Coast due to Isaac. This system will be a slow mover making those effects last longer.

For us here in Southwest Florida as Isaac has moved away from our area, our local weather has been improving. Winds will be coming in from the south-southwest today, pumping in plenty of heat and humidity. By tomorrow those winds will be turning more southeasterly, helping our weather pattern return to "normal". We'll have about 30-40% coverage of afternoon storms this afternoon and each afternoon continuing right on through your holiday weekend.

SCHOOL LUNCHES! YOUR KIDS PROBABLY LOVE EM OR HATE EM.

BUT IS IT WORKING.

KIDS DON'T LIKE SCHOOL LUNCHES-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS --

WHEN IT COMES TO SCHOOL LUNCHES -- EVERYONE HAS AN OPINION.

"Sometimes I eat it, but sometimes the food is just nasty."

AND AS NEW CHANGES ARE IMPLEMENTED IN SCHOOLS AROUND THE NATION STUDENTS ARE NOTICING. ZANE WOLTZ -- A SENIOR AT NORTHEAST MAGNET IS ONE THEM.

"Portions are a little smaller."

THAT'S TRUE--CALORIE COUNT IS DOWN--

BUT THE BIGGEST CHANGE SAYS WICHITA FOOD SERVICE DIRECTOR VICKI HOFFMAN--IS WHAT'S OFFERED.

"It does make that tray look a little bit different."

NEW FEDERAL STANDARDS THIS YEAR REQUIRE SCHOOLS TO SERVE MORE NUTRITIOUS MEALS. THAT MEANS MORE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES--AND FEWER CARBS--A SCHOOL LUNCH STAPLE THAT FILLS KIDS UP.

"You've got to eat more fruits and vegetables a variety of vegetables more whole grains low-fat dairy, limit the carbs limit the protein."

"The idea of what they're doing to help students understand proper portions and proper eating habits, I think that what good about it."

BUT FOR SOME--IT WILL TAKE SOME GETTING USED TO.

"It's just way different than last year; I could almost eat lunch every day. But this year, I don't eat it every day."

AND SOME STUDENTS SAY THEY'RE NOT GETTING ENOUGH--AND YOU CAN SEE THAT BY THE LOOKING AT THE A LA CARTE LINE.

"That's the a la carte line."

HERE, STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED TO PURCHASE ITEMS OTHER THAN THE STANDARD SCHOOL LUNCH--HOFFMAN SAYS IT'S A GOOD OPTION FOR STUDENTS WHO NEED MORE CALORIES--LIKE ATHLETES-- AND WHILE THE CHANGES MAY NOT COME EASY.

"The whole goal is kids eat healthier and learn that's what's needed for lifetime of health." Return to index of stories...

FOR FOUR MINUTES AND 24 SECONDS, THE CURIOSITY ROVER, NASA'S MOST ADVANCED AND EXPENSIVE MARS MISSION EVER, WAS A RADIO STATION.

NEVER BEFORE HAS MUSIC BEEN BROADCAST FROM ANOTHER PLANET BACK TO EARTH.

"REACHING FOR THE STARS" BY WILL.I.AM -- THE FIRST SONG TO MAKE AN INTERPLANETARY DEBUT, MEANT TO INSPIRE STUDENTS TO TAKE A GREATER INTEREST IN THE SPACE PROGRAM.

"They said, 'We have a rocket going to Mars,' and I said, 'You ever thought about putting a song on the rocket so when it lands it comes back to earth? That's never happened before.'"

CURIOSITY CLEARED ITS THROAT A DAY EARLIER, SENDING A MESSAGE FROM NASA ADMINISTRATOR CHARLIE BOLDEN.

"This is an extraordinary achievement. Landing a rover on Mars is not easy. Others have tried, only America has fully succeeded."

"And with that, we have the first human voice from another planet."

WELL, SORT OF. THE MESSAGE WAS RECORDED ON EARTH AND SENT AS A DATA FILE ON BOARD CURIOSITY.

"With this we have another small step being taken extending the human presence beyond earth."

CURIOSITY CONTINUES TO SEND BACK STRIKING IMAGES FROM THE MARTIAN SURFACE - THE MOST RECENT IS THIS PANORAMA PICTURE OF MOUNT SHARP, WHICH SCIENTISTS BELIEVE COULD HOLD A HISTORY OF THE PLANET, POTENTIALLY SIGNS OF LIFE, COMPARING IT TO THE GRAND CANYON.

AND WHILE MOUNT SHARP IS JUST TEN KILOMETERS AWAY, IT COULD TAKE THE ROVER TWO YEARS TO GET THERE.

"It would take the rover, even if we were driving flat out, 100 days to get there, and we're not going to drive flat our because we have science to do as well."

AND THAT SCIENCE IS BEING SENT BACK AT A RECORD RATE - BY CONNECTING WITH ONE OF TWO AMERICAN SATELLITES IN ORBIT, IN LESS THAN A MONTH CURIOSITY HAS SENT BACK MORE DATA THAN ALL PREVIOUS ROVERS COMBINED...

AND SOON WE MAY EVEN KNOW WHAT MARS SMELLS LIKE - CURIOSITY WILL TAKE A GOOD SNIFF, LOOKING FOR METHANE IN THE MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE.

THE LATEST ISSUE OF "HOLLYWOOD REPORTER" IS CROWNING THE 32-YEAR-OLD KING OF THE NEW A-LIST.

"Every studio wants him. He's booked solid for a year. That means no one can get him, so they have to go to their number two."

"My personal life hasn't really changed that much. I'm a lot busier."

JENNIFER LAWRENCE SNAGGED AN OSCAR NOM FOR "WINTER'S BONE". THEN SKYROCKETED TO THE TOP WHEN SHE PLAYED KATNISS IN "THE HUNGER GAMES".

"Nobody thought the first hunger games could do more than the first Twilight. The fact that it did, said Jennifer Lawrence has a great appeal."

EMMA STONE IS STEPPING INTO ROLES THAT USED TO GO TO SANDRA BULLOCK OR CAMERON DIAZ. AND OF COURSE WE CAN'T FORGET ABOUT HER OFF AND ON SCREEN LOVE. ANDREW GARFIELD, WHO HAS NOW REACHED SUPER HERO STATUS, THANKS TO "THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN".

"I'm just really enjoying that I get to step into this position for a period of time and experience life in such an intense and overwhelming way like this."

SHIA LABEOUF IS TAKING ANOTHER ROUTE TO THE TOP.

"Right now Shia has gone rogue. He's openly attacking the studios. Very few stars are prepared to do that and studios want someone who's easier to work with."

BUT SHIA SEEMS TO HAVE THE UPPER HAND. THE ABILITY TO DRAW IN THE FOREIGN MARKET. AND THAT MEANS BIG BUCKS FOR THE ACTOR!

GENETIC SEQUENCING-CLIP VO IN PLASMA

THANKS JIM.

ON THE MEDICAL FRONT THIS AFTERNOON,

A SET OF TWINS FORCED TO DEAL WITH ILLNESS ALL THEIR LIVES.

DOCTORS COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHY THEY WERE SICK - UNTIL A YEAR AGO.

CHRIS CHAN HAS THEIR STORY. Return to index of stories...

GENETIC SEQUENCING-PKG

THREE YEARS AGO, ALEXIS BEERY WOKE UP STRUGGLING TO BREATHE.

SHE USED HER PHONE AND DIALED HER PARENTS DOWN THE HALL.

"And nobody could figure out why, what was going on, why she was having trouble breathing."

SHE AND HER TWIN BROTHER WERE DIAGNOSED WITH CEREBRAL PALSEY AS TODDLERS, BUT LATER FOUND OUT THEY ACTUALLY HAD A CONDITION CALLED DOPA-RESPONSIVE DYSTONIA.

THEY GOT BETTER AT FIRST, BUT BY 2009 THEIR CONDITION DETERIORATED.

"I would always worry about things like, where's the bathroom because I would always throw up."

A YEAR AGO, THEY PERFORMED A TOTAL GENOME SEQUENCING FOR THE TWINS.

THEY DISCOVERED THE TWO WERE DEFICIENT IN SERATONIN, A HORMONE IN THE BODY THAT TRANSMITS NERVE IMPULSES.

THE DISCOVERY LED TO NEW TREATMENT AND FINALLY. A NORMAL HEALTHY LIFE.

"Most profound was, wow, we've actually found the problem and my kids are gonna be fine."

THE BEERYS ARE THANKFUL FOR THE SUCCESS AND WISH THEY HAD TESTED THEIR GENETICS EARLIER.

WHILE RESEARCHERS ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF THE FIELD TRY TO USE THE KNOWLEDGE TO FIGHT A WIDE-VARIETY OF DISEASES, DR. ERIC TOPOL AT SCRIPPS TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE SAYS GENETIC TESTING DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY GUARANTEES.

"For the beery's, it's was perfect, they found the mutation, found the right drug, found the right dose of the drug. it might not always have such a happy ending." Return to index of stories...
