AND I'M KARLA RAY.
TODAY IS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER FIRST.
WE'LL HAVE A LOOK AT TODAY'S TOP STORIES IN JUST A MINUTE.
BUT FIRST METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING JOINS US WITH YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST.
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
The forecast looks pretty cooperative this holiday weekend as sunshine dominates our Southwest Florida weather for the next few days. We'll still mention the potential for some isolated afternoon storms, but rain chances will be lower than normal for this time of year. The favored spots for rain today will be over Collier County near Marco Island and Naples, but rain coverage will be spotty.
One thing that won't be dropping much through the weekend is the humidity, and with highs well into the 90s through Labor Day, the "feels like" temperatures will be close to 100 each afternoon.
Our overnights will be clear and moderately comfortable through the weekend with temperatures actually expected to be a touch lower. Low temperatures along the urban corridor will cool to the mid 70s while locations deeper will get into the low 70s. Be sure to look out for the full moon at night; we should have a great view with hardly any clouds around.
Sunday will be the driest day of the holiday weekend as some dry air in the upper levels of the atmosphere slides over the Florida peninsula. Even with the drier air around, however, moisture will be sufficient enough to spark one or two late day showers. Rain chances should be less than 20 percent.
For you Labor Day, the forecast looks pretty similar with only a few late day showers expected. Otherwise, look for a mostly sunny sky with highs in the low to mid 90s.
By Tuesday, a little more moisture will start building into Southwest Florida, so rain chances will be back to "normal" from Tuesday and beyond. Highs will stay close to average for the remainder of the week, too, with afternoon temperatures peaking in the low to mid 90s.
In the tropics, we have two named storms, Hurricane Kirk and Tropical Storm Leslie. Neither storm will be a threat to Southwest Florida, and both are expected to turn northeast and stay out in open waters.

1:16 Oncotyping is a test that they generated on the actual tissue that you take out of the breast. 2:11 They used that information and developed this really complicated mathematical equation to look at the genes in somebody that has a breast cancer.
RESEARCHERS CREATED A GENE ESSAY BASED ON A WIDE SAMPLE OF DATA TO FIND HOW SPECIFIC CANCERS ARE LIKELY TO RESPOND. IT'S HELPED THEM SCORE PATIENT'S TUMORS BASED ON THE LIKELIHOOD OF A RECURRENCE. IT'S ALSO USED TO TAILOR CANCER TREATMENT.
DR. LEA BLACKWELL/BREAST SURGICAL ONCOLOGIST
RUNS:
3:35 It's a tool to differentiate who's going to benefit from chemotherapy or not. They get the oncotype score and see if they have a low risk of recurrence. If they have a low risk of occurrence then they don't think that chemotherapy would be beneficial. If they have a high risk of recurrence then it would be beneficial.
AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

Looking at tumor tissue at a molecular level opens up new possibilities. And allows doctors to see things differently and determine which tumors will create the biggest problems.
DR. LEA BLACKWELL/BREAST SURGICAL ONCOLOGIST
RUNS:
3:06 In the past you would think that the bigger the breast tumor sort of the nastier the behavior. Potentially you can have these small tumors that actually can behave very badly, rather than a large tumor that's behaving badly.
ONCOTYPING IS BEING USED ON EARLY STAGE, ESTROGEN RECEPTOR POSITIVE BREAST CANCERS, WHERE THE LYMPH NODES ARE NOT INVOLVED. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER.

Return to index of stories...
that's the only attitude to have, that you're going to be fine
NOT EVEN A POTENTIALLY DEADLY DIAGNOSIS LIKE LUNG CANCER CAN GET CHARLIE PRICE DOWN.
it takes a lot to scare me
CHARLIE GOT THE NEWS LAST NOVEMBER.
DOCTORS ACTED QUICKLY AND AGGRESSIVELY.REMOVING A PORTION OF HIS RIGHT LUNG.
BUT FURTHER TESTS REVEALED MORE CANCER.
SO CHARLIE'S DOCTOR SUGGESTED HE TRY A NEW TREATMENT.
once we are close the lesion, we take the guide out and take the biopsy and also put in the markers
YOU'RE ACTUALLY LOOKING AT A 3-D IMAGE OF A TUMOR IN CHARLIE'S LUNG USING "ELECTROMAGNETIC NAVIGATION BRONCHOSCOPY" OR "ENB."
DR. SUNIL LALLA SAYS THE SYSTEM WORKS JUST LIKE A GPS -- PIN-POINTING THE EXACT LOCATION OF GROWTHS.
previously, by doing a biospy of the lung under regular x-ray, the success rate was about 40%. By doing it with this new technique, it's about 80%
USING A SPECIAL SCOPE -- DOCTORS ARE ABLE TO NOT ONLY ABLE TO LOCATE TUMORS, BUT ALSO PERFORM BIOPSIES, FIND THE BEST WAY TO NAVIGATE TO THE GROWTH, AND PLACE SPECIAL "MARKERS" THAT RADIOLOGISTS USE TO DELIVER TREATMENT RIGHT TO THE SITE OF THE DISEASE.
we're radiating a smaller volume of lung and damaging less amount of tissue that is normal and targeting the abnormal lesion
FOR PATIENTS LIKE CHARLIE, IT'S EXTRA PEACE OF MIND, BUT ALSO MORE CONVIENENT.
they've shortened my treatments just down to 5 treatments, and hopefully that will be enough. I'd rather do five treatments and be done than do five weeks
