FOR SINGER ERIN BODE EVERY SONG TELLS A STORY
BUT WHEN A LOCAL HOSPITAL ASKED HER TO WRITE ONE ABOUT THEIR PATIENT…SHE KNEW IT WOULD BE SPECIAL.
MEET KATELYN JACKSON
"I was born with a hole in my heart."
BECAUSE OF IT, KATELYN'S SPENT MUCH OF HER TIME HERE…. FOR HALF HER LIFE SHE WAS ON A FEEDING TUBE. AND IN HER SHORT TEN YEARS SHE'S HAD SIX OPEN HEART SURGERIES. THERE ARE MORE THAN 40 TYPES OF CONGENITAL HEART DEFECTS. THEY CAN'T BE PREVENTED OR CURED. THIS YEAR 100-THOUSAND BABIES BORN WITH A HEART DEFECT WILL NOT LIVE TO SEE THEIR FIRST BIRTHDAY.
"It's really good to know that I've been able to survive 6 times."
HER STORY PROVIDED THE LYRICS….
HER FRIENDS PROVIDED BACKGROUND….
AND THANKS TO A RECORDING FROM A DIGITAL STETHOSCOPE, KATELYN'S HEART LITERALLY "BEATS" THROUGHOUT THE SONG.
THE TRACK ALSO PAYS TRIBUTE TO HEART PATIENTS WHO'VE PASSED, SOMETHING KATELYN'S MOM AND DOCTOR BOTH APPRECIATE.
"That actually struck me right away and I just cried."
"Katelyn symbolizes hope that's probably the most important thing."
WHILE TWICE AS MANY KIDS DIE FROM HEART DEFECTS THAN CANCER, FUNDING FOR CANCER RESEARCH IS FIVE TIMES HIGHER. FOR ERIN IT'S A WAY TO RAISE MONEY AND AWARENESS.
"This is a very formative part of their lives and to be able to express it or talk about it or have it in a song I think is good."
FOR KATELYN IT'S ONE MORE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE HER HEART
"I think it's just a miracle that I'm actually here."

What to wear when heading back to school.
For many students this time a year - it's a common dilemma.
But for Brownyn Kay, this is new territory.
That's because she's going to school for the first-time ever.at the age of 13.
Until now, Bronwyn has been "unschooled."
It's an unstructured approach to education where the child chooses what to learn and when to learn it.
One her mother Beatrice applied to all her daughters.
"it is really about taking charge of your learning."
Unschooling is a controversial subset of homeschooling.
But unlike homseschoolers, unschoolers don't follow a curriculum.
Children are allowed to set the agenda using their parents and their community as learning resources.
Carlo Ricci is another unschooling supporter.
He's also an Education Professor and a critic of conventional schooling.
"i think a one-size fits all standard curriculum does not serve a lot of the population."
Ricci believes that children are naturally driven to learn and will do so if left to their own devices.
He says mainstream schooling disconnects kids from that passion.
"schooling is not neutral it has a particular bias. It tells you what to think how to think where to think. There is a lot of control"
But critics of the hands-off approach argue there's little evidence unschooling produces a better educated adult.
They also say few parents can actually afford to educate this way.
"in my experience folks interested in unschooling are usually middle class or upper class. They have time to spend with their kids and times to organize activities."
Like her sisters before her, Bronwyn Kay chose high school over unschooling because:
"I am really excited and i am nervous."
Back to school jitters - something Brownyn will likely have in common with her new classmates.
