THE SUSPECT KIDNAPPED THE BANK MANAGER FROM HER HOME, STRAPPED THE DEVICE TO HER WAIST, THEN FORCED HER EMPLOYEES TO "TAKE OUT ALL THE MONEY".

THE QUESTION THIS AFTERNOON - WAS IT AN INSIDE JOB?

HERE'S T-J WINICK. Return to index of stories...

CA BANK HEIST-PKG

A man-hunt continues on the West Coast for two gunmen who reportedly

kidnapped a bank manager.and tied a bomb around her waist.before

ordering her to rob her own bank.

SOT: LAURA EIMILLER, FBI SPOKESWOMAN

A significant amount of money was taken. that's clear

The nightmare allegedly began AROUND 8 WEDNESDAY MORNING when THE two men

approached her outside her home as she was leaving for work.

SHE TOLD POLICE THE MEN.allegedly armed with handguns and wearing ski

masks.ORDERED HER TO strap a DEVICE to her stomach, and THEN drive to the

Bank of America.

POLICE SAY she did exactly as she was told: first, opening the vaults.

SOT CAPTAIN MIKE PARKER

She took the money out of the bank and threw it out the door to the bank

robbers.

The robbers - who never even set foot inside the building - made their

escape before cops and the bomb squad arrived on the scene.

SOT CAPTAIN PARKER

That is a very rare occurrence, to actually remove a device from a person.

But it's something that the bomb squad investigators are trained for.

A bomb squad robot detonated the device, which turned out to be a very

convincing fake.

Now some believe it might have been an inside job.that the manager might

have been involved.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A SHOWER AT ANY TIME

Southwesterly breezes will continue to influence our weather pattern for the next couple of days. That southwesterly flow gives the chances for a shower at any time as it comes onshore. The better chance will be closer to the coastline in the morning and deeper inland in the afternoon. Afternoon high temperatures will stay in the lower 90s and lows will be in the mid and upper 70s for the next few days. As far as the tropics are concerned, there are 2 hurricanes in the Atlantic right now: Leslie and Michael. Neither of these is a threat to Southwest Florida. As a point of interest, Michael could become a major hurricane, but will stay over the open waters of the Atlantic. In the north-central Gulf of Mexico, there is another feature that we will be monitoring closely for you over the next few days. It is an area of low pressure that is left over from what was once Hurricane Isaac. It is drifting south-southwest right now. Depending on the exact track of this, we could see a noticeable uptick in our rain chances this weekend into early next week. We'll be tracking it all, on-air and on-line. VOTER ID LAWS-PKG

Ninety-three year old Viviette Applewhite cast her first vote for president

in 1932 for Franklin Roosevelt. But this year, because of a new voter ID law

in Pennsylvania, she's worried that she won't have a chance to vote THIS

NOVEMBER. Applewhite doesn't have the required documents to obtain a photo

ID.

Viviette Applewhite-SOT-

THEY PARTICULARLY MADE IT TO CRIPPLE THE BLACK RACE SO OBAMA WILL NOT GET IN

THERE.

Applewhite is now the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against the state.

Thirty-three states have passed laws requiring identification before

citizens can vote. Critics say the real issue is voter suppression, not

voter fraud -pointing out that nearly every state legislature that's passed

tougher voter ID laws is controlled by Republicans.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa-SOT-

THEY'RE NOW ADOPTING AND APPROVING LAWS THAT WILL LIMIT PEOPLE FROM VOTING.

Supporters of voter IDs say the laws weren't passed to exclude voters, just

to protect against voter fraud.

Nikki Haley-SOT-

WE SAID IN SOUTH CAROLINA/ IF YOU HAVE TO SHOW A PICTURE ID TO SET FOOT ON

AN AIRPLANE, THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE TO SHOW A PICTURE ID TO PROTECT/ THE

RIGHT TO VOTE.

Earlier this year, WLOS, an ABC affiliate proved how easy it could be to

vote as some elsesending a 20 something, white male to vote as a deceased

African American woman.

NATS:

SO WAIT I DON'T NEED TO SHOW MY ID?

WE DON'T NEED IT.

But research shows that cases of actual voter fraud are very rare. A probe

by the Justice Department found that between 2002 and 2007, *no one*

was prosecuted for impersonating another voter.

Stand Up Bridge

DEMOCRATS SAY THEY'VE TRIED TO SHED LIGHT ON VOTER ID LAWS. THEY SAY THEY'LL

FIGHT THESE LAWS THROUGH NOVEMBER AND BEYOND.

Last week, Texas' voter ID law was struck down by a federal court, which

ruled the law would place "an unfair burden on minorities and the poor. But

appeals in crucial battleground states are underway, like in Pennsylvania,

where the state Supreme Court will take up the voter ID law. These rulings

could determine if a number of citizens in swing states have to sit out

November's election. Return to index of stories...
