HELLO-2 SHOT PUSH

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M JOE ROETZ.

AND I'M JENNIFER TRAMMELL.

IT'S SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 9-TH.

WE'LL HAVE A LOOK AT TODAY'S TOP STORIES IN JUST A MINUTE.

BUT FIRST METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING IS HERE WITH YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

After a couple dry sunny days, rain chances will gradually be on the rise as a front slowly slides in from the north. Since the front will only be only crawling our way, the areas most at risk for seeing a passing shower will be locations farther north.

If you're in Charlotte or Desoto County, you'll see the most shower activity followed by Lee, Glades, and Hendry County. Locations across Collier County may even see a few passing showers later today, but coverage there will be fairly spotty.

Even for areas that see the best chance of rain, showers will still be fairly scattered, so today shouldn't be a complete washout for anyone. Just expect showers to pass through from time to time.

We'll even see a fair amount of sun through your Sunday along with a refreshing breeze out of the southwest from 5-15 mph. Temperatures will be close to yesterday's numbers, so most spots should warm into the upper 80s and low 90s.

By tonight we'll still see the possibility for some isolated rain, but later in the night the main target areas for rain will be close to the coast.

On Monday and Tuesday, the front will stall over Central and South Florida, keeping a good chance of showers in our forecast both days. On Monday most of us will get our best chance of rain in the morning and early afternoon, and then on Tuesday both day parts will be fair game for rain.

Rain chances should start to come down a little Wednesday as some slightly drier air trickles into Southwest Florida. There will still be enough moisture around, however, to keep a chance of afternoon and evening rain in the forecast. Return to index of stories...

CRIME STOPPERS-ON CAM

OVER THE LAST YEAR OR SO,

FLORIDA HAS BECOME FAMOUS, REGRETTABLY, AS BEING THE PILL MILL CAPITAL OF THE U-S.

A HANDFUL OF DOCTORS ARE WORKING IN UNISON WITH DRUG ADDICTS AND DEALERS TO KEEP POWERFUL PAIN PILLS from FREE FLOWING ON THE STREETS OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

TRISH ROUTTE WITH CRIME STOPPERS HAS MORE ON THIS GROWING PROBLEM AND HOW YOU CAN HELP STOP IT. Return to index of stories...

CRIME STOPPERS-PKG

Crime Stoppers segment for 9/8/12 TRT: 2:06

Sheriff Scott - "Epidemic is absolutely the right word. It's unbelievable."

More and more, local residents are being prescribed with enormous amounts of highly addictive pain pills for, often times, less than legitimate ailments. Forget the days of 30 pills to cover a month's supply… some patients are getting the green light for hundreds and hundreds of pills each month.

Sheriff Scott - "We've got doctors out there, and physicians assistants who have the authority to prescribe medications and are doing so recklessly."

Take the case of Jacklyn Kincade - a beautiful young woman with a full life ahead of her. That was - at least - until she fell prey to pills, and the enabling pill mills. Over the course of just two years, she went from this…. To this. But Jacklyn, unfortunately, is just one example of how prescription pills are leading to an increasing number of drug related deaths in our state.

Trish Routte - Differentiating a pill mill from a legitimate doctor is actually quite easy. You'll often see lines of people quickly coming and going - they're always crowded and the patients often appear a little on the shady side.

Sheriff Scott - "We've had people that'll make four, five, six different doctors appointments in one day, and go around and shop and say my shoulder hurts and I need a little something for it."

And once they're hooked, the need for more pills only grows.

Sheriff Scott - "These opiate derivates are very addictive and that one of the big dangers with this. People will sell their house, home and first born or steal and rob to get these drugs."

Statewide, measures are being put in place to eradicate the pill mill epidemic, including increasing penalties for overprescribing Oxycodone and tracking the wholesale distribution of the pills. The reason? 98 of the nation's top 100 Oxycodone purchasing physicians are right here in the state of Florida.

But as with any illegal activity, we need residents to take stock in their community and pick up the phone to report doctors over-prescribing these meds, and the users who are destroying their own lives - as well as the lives of those to whom they're selling.

For Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, I'm Trish Routte. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

AS LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY PREPARE FOR THE ANNIVERSARY

OF SEPTEMBER ELEVENTH.

A NEW BULLETIN OBTAINED BY ABC NEWS SAYS THEY HAVE BEEN TOLD OF A "DECLINE

IN NINE ELEVEN MESSAGING BY AL QAEDA. BUT THEY ARE WARNED "LONE OFFENDER

THREATS ARE STILL A CONCERN."

OFFICIALS TELL ABC NEWS LAW ENFORCEMENT WILL STILL REMAIN VIGILANT.

BUT THESE SCALED-BACK STATEMENTS PALE IN COMPARISON TO THE CLIMATE BEFORE

LAST YEAR'S TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY.

" Ie---We are worried about a truck bomb.we are taking this threat

seriously / we are sending out extra forces etc"

LAST YEAR INTELLIGENCE SUGGESTED

THAT AL QAEDA MILITANTS MAY BE PREPARING FOR ATTACKS USING CAR OR TRUCK

BOMBS

IN WASHINGTON AND NEW YORK. SO WHY IS AL QAEDA QUIETER THIS YEAR?

"23 of the top 30 AQ commanders are off the field - either dead or captured

in the last 2, 3 to 4 years. So this has been a pretty tough series of

months and years for AQ"

AND WHILE AN AL QAEDA THREAT HAS BEEN DOWNGRADED. THE THREAT OF THE LONE

WOLF STILL LOOMS.RECENT DOMESTIC TERROR ATTEMPTS. FROM TIME SQUARE TO A

PORTLAND PARADE AND EVEN THIS DALLAS OFFICE BUILDING.HAVE BEEN LAUNCHED

BY SINGLE INDIVIDUALS.

LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS TELL US ATTACKS BY LONE WOLVES ARE HARDER TO

TRACK.COUNTER TERRORISM OFFICIALS SAY THEY ARE JUST BETTER AT GOING

MYSTERY PLANE DOOR FALLS-PKG

SCRIPT:

IT'S THE MYSTERY THAT HAS THE WHOLE CITY OF KENT WASHINGTON TALKINGEVERYONE

WONDERINGJUST HOW DID *THIS* GET *HERE*?

WITNESSES SAY THE OBJECT - THE SIZE OF A REFRIGERATOR DOOR - FELL FROM THE

SKY JUST BEFORE 7 FRIDAY MORNING, CRASHING DOWN ONTO THIS RESIDENTIAL STREET

JUST OUTSIDE SEATTLE

SOT: "We heard a big crash, like a slap, slap. And it did sound like a big

large piece of metal."

THE F-A-A WAS SOON ON THE SCENE IN A STATEMENT, THE AGENCY TOLD ABC

NEWS THE OBJECT WAS QUOTE.

"a landing gear door from a Boeing 767."

BUT WHERE DID THE DOOR COME FROM? JUST MOMENTS BEFORE IT CRASHED, NEIGHBORS

DESCRIBED WHAT LOOKED LIKE A CARGO JET FLYING UNUSUALLY LOW.

Diane Oien, Resident

"It sounded like maybe a little distresssed or vibrating."

Col. Stephen Ganyard, Retired U.S. Marine Commander

"What could have happened in this instance is, as the aircraft was coming in

to land in Seattle / the force of the air on the landing gear door could

have torn of an already weakened gear door that may have then lead to this

piece of metal going into the residential area. "

THIS IS NOT THE FIRST INSTANCE OF PLANE PARTS FALLING FROM THE SKY

BACK IN MAY, PIECES THE SIZE OF CELLPHONES FROM AN AIR CANADA BOEING 777

SCATTERED ONTO CARS NEAR TORONTO.

JUST DAYS BEFORE, A DOOR FROM A SMALL PLANE LANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF A

FAIRWAY ON A MIAMI GOLF COURSE.

AND IN 2009 A DOZEN HOUSES AND NUMEROUS CARS IN MANAUS, BRAZIL, WERE

REPORTED DAMAGED WHEN PARTS, ONE WEIGHING AS MUCH AS 550 POUNDS, FELL FROM A

CARGO FREIGHTER.

Col. Stephen Ganyard, Retired U.S. Marine Commander

"This something that happens quiet frequently especially as airplanes get

older and things tend to break. "
