MONDAY POLITICS PKG-2 SHOT

WITH LESS THAN TWO MONTHS TO GO UNTIL ELECTION DAY,

WE TURN TO POLITICS NOW. WHERE PRESIDENT OBAMA IS GAINING MOMENTUM AFTER LAST WEEK'S

CONVENTION.

HE'S AHEAD IN NEW POLL NUMBERS AND IN CAMPAIGN CASH.

AND REPUBLICAN CHALLENGER MITT ROMNEY SAYS, IF ELECTED, HE WOULD KEEP PARTS

OF THE PRESIDENT'S HEALTH CARE PLAN.

TAHMAN BRADLEY HAS THE LATEST. Return to index of stories...

MONDAY POLITICS PKG-PKG

PKG SCRIPT:

NATS - Obama & supporter at FL restaurant

"and vote for him"

The campaigns are hunkering down in crucial battleground states, with

President Obama getting a lift coming out of the Democratic National

Convention last week.

The Gallup Daily Tracking Poll now has Mr. Obama five points ahead of

Mitt Romney.

Courting seniors in Florida over the weekend, the President blasted the

Romney Medicare plan.

SOT Obama

"SO HERE'S THE BOTTOM LINE: THEIR PLAN BANKRUPTS MEDICARE. / OUR PLAN

STRENGTHENS MEDICARE."

Romney, in an interview with NBC, used the disappointing August jobs numbers

-- the economy adding just 96,000 jobs -- to rip President Obama's record.

SOT Romney

"I THINK IT IS A JOBLESS RECOVERY, IF IT'S A RECOVERY AT ALL. IT REALLY

DOESN'T LOOK LIKE A RECOVERY."

The Obama campaign hit back with Vice President Biden, campaigning in Ohio,

attacking Romney's economic plan.

SOT Biden

"FOLKS, WE'VE SEEN THIS MOVIE BEFORE / AND WE KNOW HOW IT ENDS. IT ENDS IN

A CATASTROPHE FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS."

Health care is also being debated on the trail with Romney raising some

eyebrows.

For months, the GOP hopeful said he'd *repeal* the President's health care

law. But now:

SOT Romney - NBC/Meet the Press

"I'M NOT GETTING RID OF ALL OF HEALTH CARE REFORM, OF COURSE. THERE ARE A

NUMBER OF THINGS I LIKE IN HEALTH CARE REFORM THAT I'M GOING TO PUT IN PLACE

. ONE IS TO MAKE SURE THOSE WITH PRE-EXISITING CONDITIONS CAN GET COVERAGE."

Today, Romney heads to the crucial state of Ohio.

No Republican has ever won the White House without winning the Buckeye State

.

Without Ohio, Romney would need to win nearly every other battleground state

to capture the White House.

For the first time in four months, the Obama campaign pulled ahead of Romney

in fundraising, raising 114-million dollars in August. The Romney team

raised 111-million for the month.

5:02 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL

Today's Weather Story

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Higher rain chances return to the forecast Monday as a weak front settles right over Southwest Florida. This front will keep the atmosphere unsettled over the next couple days until some drier air chips away at our rain chances by Wednesday.

Rainy days and Mondays don't always make for the best combination, but at least the rain won't be too widespread.

We'll mainly just see a scattering of showers starting as early as this morning and then carrying over into the afternoon. Shower movement will be from west to east, and locations farther north will likely see the most rain.

A few thunderstorms will also be possible today, especially once things start to heat up a little by the late morning and afternoon, but we don't anticipate any severe weather.

Winds will be a little breezy at times, and wind gusts may get up to 20 mph, especially near the coast.

Aside from the extra showers today, our sky should still be at least partially sunny. We will, however, notice a lot more clouds cover compared to the weekend, and as a result, temperatures should only warm into the mid to upper 80s.

Tuesday will likely be a tad wetter as the front gradually slides farther south. Look for the possibility of rain Tuesday morning and then more rain and a few thunderstorms during the afternoon.

By Wednesday, the front should be far enough south so that we get more sun and fewer showers along with a slight dip in humidity. Overnight and early mornings will also be more comfortable starting Wednesday with mostly clear skies and lows in the low to mid 70s.

On Thursday and Friday, we'll enjoy mainly skies for most of the day, but some late-day showers and a few storms will still be possible, particularly for areas close to the coast and Highway 41.

High temperatures through the second half of the week will warm into the low 90s. Return to index of stories...

5:32 FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL
