MILLIONS OF AMERICANS TAKE FISH OIL REDUCE THEIR RISK FOR HEART ATTACKS AND STROKE.
BUT A LARGE NEW STUDY SHOWS ABSOLUTELY *NO* BENEFIT OF FISH OIL SUPPLEMENTS.
HERE'S ERIKA EDWARDS.
Return to index of stories...
MILLIONS OF AMERICANS CHOKE DOWN LARGE FISH OIL SUPPLEMENTS EVERY DAY -- COUGHING UP MORE THAN 1-BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR -- BASED ON THE BELIEF THAT THE PILLS CAN HELP PREVENT HEART DISEASE.
BUT NOW -- A LARGE REVIEW OF RESEARCH SHOWS -NO- OVERALL HEART BENEFIT TO TAKING OMEGA-3 FATTY ACID, OR FISH OIL, SUPPLEMENTS.
THERE WAS A SMALL REDUCED RISK FOR HEART-RELATED DEATHS -- BUT RESEARCHERS SAY -- IT WASN'T SIGNIFICANT.
OTHER FORMS OF HEART DISEASE PREVENTION HAVE BEEN WELL DOCUMENTED.
"Eating healthfully, exercising is really so much more important than supplement."
ACCORDING TO THE COUNCIL FOR RESPONSIBLE NUTRITION -- NEARLY A QUARTER OF ALL U-S ADULTS TAKE FISH OIL PILLS.
IN A STATEMENT, THE ORGANIZATION SUGGESTED THE RESEARCH RESULTS WERE SKEWED BECAUSE THE "COMBINED STUDIES WERE NOT COMPARABLE IN THEIR DESIGN."
BUT THIS IS THE LATEST IN A STRING OF STUDIES FINDING LITTLE TO NO BENEFIT TO SUPPLEMENTS. RECENT STUDIES HAVE REFUTED CLAIMS THAT GINKGO BILOBA CAN PREVENT DEMENTIA. AND THAT VITAMIN D MAY LOWER CHOLESTEROL.
DIETITIANS SAY IT'S THE SYNERGY OF PHYTO-CHEMICALS AND MULTIPLE NUTRIENTS IN FOOD THAT MAKES HEALTHY FOOD. HEALTHY.
"It's not the same to get vitamins and supplements from a pill. It's so much better to get it from food."
OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS ARE FOUND NATURALLY IN OILY FISH LIKE SALMON AND TUNA. FLAX SEED AND WALNUTS.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
DAILY AFTERNOON RAIN THIS WEEK
High pressure building across the eastern United States is setting up to deliver us some afternoon rain each day this week. The winds are coming around to a northeasterly direction which is expected to continue through the weekend. The morning weather forecast should be mainly dry for the rest of the week with lows in the mid 70's. Afternoon high temperatures will climb to the low 90's for the next few days and with building clouds each afternoon we will track showers and downpours developing inland and moving back toward the Gulf of Mexico by late day. Dry air and comfortable temperatures don't look to be in the cards for us for the rest of the week.
In the Atlantic we continue to monitor storms that are not a threat to Florida. Leslie and Michael are still on the map and moving north toward colder waters and eventual demise. A new tropical depression farther south could develop into Tropical Storm Nadine, but this potential storm is also expected to curve away from the United States.

Christy marshall is hoping her business will flourish.
-making flower arrangement
Marshall opened Little Shop of Flowers on cape coral parkway back in April.
-christy marshall/owner, little shop of flowers-"I was thinking that this would be a good area. There was definately a need for it in this area."
Marshall is one of hundreds of small business owners in cape coral who will see their solid waste rates triple beginning october 1st.
The basic rate for commercial pick-up will increase from $22.19 to $70.26.
-marshall-"it may not seem like a lot to other people but it could very well be the difference of staying in business."
Historically, commercial solid waste rates have been subsidized by residents like joe bucceri. Not anymore.
-joe bucerri/homeowner-"any time prices go down that's a good thing."
The city attorney told council, residents should not have to pay to help keep commercial solid waste rates down.
-chris chulakes-leetz/cape councilman-"suddenly the city attorney tells us that would be illegal and improper."
Mike quaintance is the president of the cape coral chamber of commerce. He's worried the pricey increase will force struggling businesses to close.
-mike quaintance/cape coral chamber of commerce-"its going to have a significant impact."
An impact that will have small business owners - like marshall - keeping a close eye on the bottom line.
-marshall-"its been hard, we've been trying hard to make it work but been challenging with cash flow."
