NEW DEVELOPMENTS TONIGHT IN A DESOTO COUNTY DEATH INVESTIGATION--

TWO DAYS AFTER HER DISAPPEARANCE, SEARCH CREWS DISCOVERED THE WOMAN'S BODY IN THE PEACE RIVER IN ARCADIA.

BUT THERE ARE STILL QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW SHE GOT THERE.

INVESTIGATORS SAY IT'S A CRIME.

AND TONIGHT, THESE TWO MEN ARE IN JAIL--

NBC-2'S MEAGHAN SMITH HAS AN UPDATE ON THE INVESTIGATION. Return to index of stories...

ARCADIA BODY FOUND-PKG-BNR

*meaghan* "the woman was found about 2 miles from here and pulled from the water this morning.

this bar is where witnesses say she was standing when she was reportedly pushed in by her boyfriend."

deputies know little about the woman pulled from the peace river this morning.

sheriff 6:37 "her body has been recovered so now we're trying to identify this young lady."

two men have been arrested in connection with her death-

and we're told they're not cooperating with law enforcement.

sheriff 6:13 "all we know is that she's possibly from the tampa area- she's a black female, 18-25 years of age. we were told that her first name was possibly keisha."

search crews found her by helicopter today after their search began sunday.

about 2 pm that day-

detectives say the woman was with her boyfriend, mark huntley and his friend- andrew skevington, on the bridge at morgan park.

investigators report that huntley pressured his girlfriend to jump into the water- even though she told him she couldn't swim.

deputies say he pushed her in anyway.

sheriff 6:04 "she went under and was not seen again."

deputies say both men then jumped in the water, but it was too late.

they were arrested-

huntley for manslaughter and skevington for accessory after the fact- that's because deputies say the 2 men took all of the victim's things- including her id, and took off.

michael johnson watched the search-

michael 1:11 "this right here is just odd, weird and plain disturbing."

and is relieved the victim has been found.

deputies here are working with law enforcement agencies in the tampa area to hopefully figure out who she is.

*meaghan* "while no one at the scene really knew much about them- witnesses told deputies the 2 acted like a couple. investigators are looking through missing person's reports out of tampa, and the medical examiner is trying to get fingerprints off of the body to figure out who the victim is. in desoto county, meaghan smith, nbc-2." CHARCO PAYS SKIDMORE LEGAL FEES-PKG-BNR

Nats "Commissioner Skidmore, if I could talk straight to you." Commissioner Tricia Duffy/Charlotte County.

CLEARLY UNCOMFORTABLE, ROBERT SKIDMORE ANSWERED QUESTIONS FROM HIS FELLOW COMMISSIONERS.

"is there a dollar figure at the far end of what this suit would involve?" Commissioner Stephen R. Deutsch/ Charlotte County.

SKIDMORE HAS ALREADY RACKED UP MORE THAN 4-THOUSAND DOLLAR BILL -- DEFENDING HIMSELF IN AN ETHICS CASE.

NOW HE'S ASKING FOR AN ADVANCE TO HELP PAY FOR MORE LEGAL FEES UP FRONT.

"This has been a tough time, we all know that." Commissioner Robert Skidmore/Charlotte County.

THE ETHICS COMPLAINT CLAIMS SKIDMORE GAVE SPECIAL TREATMENT WHEN SOLVING CERTAIN CODE VIOLATIONS.

BUT TODAY, COMMISSIONERS DECIDED THEY WOULDN'T GIVE SKIDMORE THE ADVANCE -- UNTIL AFTER A HEARING NEXT MONTH.

"I would certainly be fine reimbursing you if you're found not guilty." Commissioner Tricia Duffy/Charlotte County.

IN ANOTHER CASE, SKIDMORE IS ACCUSED OF SEXUALLY HARASSING A FORMER COUNTY EMPLOYEE.

"I vehemently deny any and all accusations and the only way for me to disprove those allegations is to be represented by the best counsel I can obtain." Commissioner Robert Skidmore/Charlotte County.

IN THAT CASE, THE BOARD AGREED TO FRONT SKIDMORE TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR HIS LEGAL FEES.

WHY WOULD THEY DO IT IN THIS CASE?

WELL, BY PAYING FOR SKIDMORE'S ATTORNEY, COMMISSIONERS EXPECT HER TO WORK WITH JANETTE KNOWLTON THE COUNTY ATTORNEY BECAUSE THE COUNTY IS ALSO NAMED IN THE LAWSUIT.

"this is a hired hand that Ms. Knowlton can lean on and run things by, so it definitely benefits the county." Commissioner Christopher Constance/Charlotte County.

COMMISSIONER BOB STARR VOTED AGAINST PAYING THE LEGAL FEES SAYING THE ALLEGATIONS DON'T QUALIFY SKIDMORE TO BE REIMBURSED BY THE COUNTY.

IF HE IS FOUND GUILTY, SKIDMORE WILL HAVE TO PAY THE MONEY BACK.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

DAILY AFTERNOON RAIN THIS WEEK

High pressure building across the eastern United States is setting up to deliver us some afternoon rain each day this week. The winds are coming around to a northeasterly direction which is expected to continue through the weekend. The morning weather forecast should be mainly dry for the rest of the week with lows in the mid 70's. Afternoon high temperatures will climb to the low 90's for the next few days and with building clouds each afternoon we will track showers and downpours developing inland and moving back toward the Gulf of Mexico by late day. Dry air and comfortable temperatures don't look to be in the cards for us for the rest of the week.

In the Atlantic we continue to monitor storms that are not a threat to Florida. Leslie and Michael are still on the map and moving north toward colder waters and eventual demise. A new tropical depression farther south could develop into Tropical Storm Nadine, but this potential storm is also expected to curve away from the United States. Return to index of stories...
