12YR OLD HIT BY CAR IN LEHIGH-PKG-BNR

Take Sot

5 seconds

I remember everything. I felt drowsy.

A simple turn of the head - would have saved Devon Rajos from this pain.

Take SOT

30:02-09

Devon Rajos

I have a scrape here, the back of my head and I'm sore here.

The 12 year old was headed to his Lehigh ACres bus stop on 68th STreet West this morning - when disaster struck.

Take SOT

Devon Rajos

29:28-36

I looked that way and then crossed. The car hit me.

Looking one way - but not the other -

where Lee County Deputies say this slow moving Toyota Camry struck the

12 year old.

Shattering the car's windshield and cracking its headlight.

31:04-9

I hit the cement and crawled into the grass.

Rojas says the driver- 41 year old Marie Auguste- called 911.

Even though deputies say she wasn't speeding - neighbors say cars and kids on this street don't mix.

59:31- 40

It's a big concern for children where getting dropped off and parents should tell them to stay out of the street and be respectful of cars.

55:13-21

Linda Harclerode - Lehigh

If it's gonna take speed bumps, stop signs whatever, something has to be done. Unfortunately tragedy has to happen.

Meanwhile - Rojas says a major event could have been avoided if he made one minor change.

30:29-36

Did you learn anything? Always look both ways. Return to index of stories...

STUDENTS INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS-ONCAM

WITH THIS UNFORTUNATE TREND, WE ASKED LOCAL LEADERS WHAT CAN BE DONE TO KEEP STUDENTS SAFE ON THEIR WAY TO SCHOOL.

NBC-2'S ELIZABETH BILLINGSLEY REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

STUDENTS INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS-PKG-BNR

BROKEN WINDSHIELDS AND BROKEN BONES -

AN UNNECESSARY PART OF THE SCHOOL DAY

"they were all here this morning and they were horrified to have another student hurt."

JAMIE MICHAEL IS ACTING PRESIDENT OF THE SUPPORT PERSONNEL ASSOCIATION OF LEE COUNTY -- REPRESENTING THE DISTRICT'S SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS.

SIDEWALKS AND LIGHTING WOULD HELP PREVENT ACCIDENTS LIKE THESE - BUT SHE DISMAYS IT'S NOT IN THE BUDGET.

"with the reduction in taxes, people don't want to pay for those things and as long as we don't put our students at the forefront - whether it's academics or sidewalks"

LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE YOU CROSS THE STREET -

PART OF THE BASIC SAFETY CURRICULUM - BUT MICHAEL THINKS TEACHING STUDENTS HOW TO BE SAFE HAS GOTTEN SHORT SHRIFT.

"With high stakes testing, it kind of falls to the wayside because they have to get into those academics first week.

THE LEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT SAYS THESE ACCIDENTS GIVES ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO DISCUSS SAFETY PRACTICES WITH CHILDREN - WEHTER ON PUBLIC OR PRIVATE ROADS.

"Oh, I'm not saying there's not a lot of bonehead pedestrians and bicyclists out there, there are."

DAN MOSER TEACHES BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY IN THE COMMUNITY.

HE BELIEVES MORE ENFORCEMENT WOULD DETER ACCIDENTS.

"The whole thing is really personal responsibility all around."

THE GOAL - FEWER SCENES LIKE THESE.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

LESS CLOUDS, MORE SUN TOMORROW

Clouds hung tough today, and as a result our highs didn't get over 90. The clouds will not completely erode away tomorrow, but I can promise a little more sunshine for your day!

Remember that old cold front we talked about several days ago? It hasn't completely faded away. It's essentially meandering around south Florida, the Gulf, and part of the south central U.S. This boundary is the focus for our weather still today, and it's kept the moisture locked in place. Consequently, we've seen a lot of clouds and periods of rain.

Tomorrow will be a mix of sun and clouds. Could we wake up to a couple of coastal showers? Yes, overall the trend is dry in the morning. After lunch time, heavy downpours and storms will begin developing across the interior, and they'll shift west toward the urban corridor.

As for this weekend - even more sunshine will be available. Our winds are going to slack, and that will allow the sea breeze to begin. With winds coming from the northeast… The sea breeze will be held closer to the I-75.

Winds shift to the south to start the week. Simply put, this means to keep the umbrella at hand.

Temperatures will be right around our average this week! Lower 90s are in the forecast.

There's no concerns for southwest Florida in the tropics! Return to index of stories...

FOR MOST TEENAGE GIRLS- A TRIP TO THE MALL MEANS NEW FASHION AND FUN--

FOR JADE SUMMERS-

IT'S A STRUGGLE.

Dave Summers 31:11 When we go shopping, a lot of the paths are not wide enough for her wheelchair to go through, and it's real aggravating to try to push her through there. :21

STORES PACKED WITH PRODUCTS-

AND AISLES SO TIGHT- THE TEEN'S WHEELCHAIR TAKES MERCHANDISE WITH IT AT NEARLY EVERY TURN.

dave Summers 31:24 if she's by herself, how is she going to be able to do this? It's constant barrier, barrier barrier. :30

BORN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY, THE TEEN RELIES ON HER PARENTS, DAVE AND DEENA-

Dave Summers 33:00 she should be able to go in and out of the stores like you or I. :10

Matthew Dietz 46:19 there's a balance between merchandising the store, and also having access to the store. :25

ATTORNEY MATTHEW DIETZ SAYS THE AMERICAN DISABILITY ACT PROMISES THE SAME ACCESS IN STORES FOR A PERSON IN A WHEELCHAIR AS AN ABLE-BODIED PERSON--

WITH NO LESS THAN 32 INCHES OF CLEAR SPACE BETWEEN PRODUCTS.

Matthew Dietz 44:58 they should be able to go into a store, look in a store, maybe not be able to reach everything that's in a store or get to every single item in a store, but be able to see and be able to shop just like anyone else. :09

WE VISITED THE STORES JADE FREQUENTS TO MEASURE OURSELVES.

THE DAY WE CHECKED CLAIRE'S AT MIROMAR OUTLETS, THERE WAS 27 INCHES OF SPACE. BUT ONLY WHEN MERCHANDISE WAS PUSHED BACK.

AT LOVE CULTURE - THE DAY WE WENT DISPLAYS VARIED--

SOME HAD PLENTY OF SPACE-

OTHERS THERE WASN'T ENOUGH ROOM.

AND AT AEROPOSTALE AT MIROMAR OUTLETS-

MANY PARTS OF THE STORE HAD ENOUGH ROOM-

BUT THERE WAS ONLY 20 INCHES BETWEEN THE SALES RACK AND BACK WALL.

Matthew Dietz 44:48 there has to be access within a store and a person in a wheelchair should have equal access to any other able-bodied person. :57

DIETZ HAS FORCED MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR SETTLEMENTS FROM SEVERAL STORES - SOMETIMES BECAUSE THAT'S THE ONLY WAY TO GET THEM TO COMPLY.

THE NBC2 INVESTIGATORS DISCOVERED THERE'S NO ORGANIZATION THAT OVERSEES OR INSPECTS FOR A-D-A COMPLIANCE LIKE THIS.

SOMETHING JADE'S DAD THINKS SHOULD BE CHANGED.

Dave Summers 32:10 she should be able to go in, go through the aisles herself and not feel like she's being a burden to anybody. :19 Return to index of stories...
