My impression is this is an embarrassment to our city.

A POTENTIAL BREAK-UP TONIGHT FOR NAPLES FIREFIGHTERS AND E-M-S--

COLLIER FIRE EMS FIGHT-PKG-BNR

FRUSTRATIONS ABOUT 15 YEAR EMERGENCY PROGRAM WITH THE COUNTY AND THE CITY OF NAPLES- HAS PARTICIPATING FIRE FIGHTERS DROPPING OUT LIKE FLIES.

THEY DECIDED MORE OR LESS IN MASS TO START DROPPING OUT OF THE PROGRAM.

NAPLES FIRE CHIEF STEPHEN MCINERNY SAYS THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM-SIMPLY CALLED THE ALS SWAP PROGRAM-HAS ITS HICCUPS BUT IS A GREAT THING FOR THE CITY.

EVERYDAY ONE OF OUR FIRE FIGHTER EMTS OR PARAMEDICS RIDES ON A COLLIER COUNTY AMBULANCE TO FIRE STATION TWO AND COLLIER COUNTY EMS PLACES PARAMEDIC FIRE FIGHTERS ON OUR ENGINE.

THE PROGRAM ULTIMATELY GIVES TRAINING FOR THE COUNTY'S PARAMEDICS AND CITY FIRE FIGHTERS.

CHIEF MCINERNY SAYS SOME OF THE 30 PLUS PARTICIPATING FIRE FIGHTERS WOULD LOOSE MONEY CERTAIN DAYS DEPENDING ON IF THEY'RE IN AN AMBULANCE OR ON A FIRE TRUCK.

WE GOT OUR HANDS ON THIS LETTER FROM A CITY OF NAPLES FIRE FIGHTER- WHO ALSO SERVES AS THE FIRE UNION PRESIDENT-

HE SAYS HE DROPPED OUT OF THE PROGRAM BECAUSE ITS SET UP WASN'T SUPPOSED TO PERMANENT.

ONLY PEMPORARY.

HE ALSO ADDED THE PROGRAM DOESN'T BENEFIT THE CITIZENS OF NAPLES.

BUT NAPLES CITY COUNCIL MEMBER GARY PRICE SAYS OTHERWISE.

WE'VE SPENT A YEAR TRYING TO IMPROVE THIS SYSTEM AND GETTING BETTER TRAINING WORKING WITH THE COUNTY. MY IMPRESSION IS THIS IS AN EMBARRASSMENT TO OUR CITY.

AN EMBARRASSMENT PRICE SAYS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

IF WE HAVE PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT TO DO THEIR JOB, WE NEED TO GO AND FIND PEOPLE THAT WANT TO.

SO FAR HALF OF THE 30 PLUS PARTICIPATING FIRE FIGHTERS HAVE DROPPED OUT OF THE PROGRAM AND OTHERS ARE EXPECTED TO FOLLOW SUIT.

BUT CHIEF MCINERNY SAYS THEY'LL DO WHAT EVER THEY CAN TO KEEP THE PROGRAM AFLOAT.

REPORTER: DO YOU THINK THIS AMOUNT OF PEOPLE DROPPING OUT WILL AFFECT PUBLIC SAFETY IS GOING TO AFFECT PUBLIC SAFETY?

NO. IT WILL ONLY AFFECT HOW WE GET TRAINING.
