NEW TONIGHT AT ELEVEN
GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT NOW SAYS HE WILL PUSH LAWMAKERS TO AVOID CUTTING THE EDUCATION BUDGET THIS YEAR.
THIS CAME AFTER A DINNER LAST NIGHT WITH EDUCATION UNION OFFICIALS-- INCLUDING LEE COUNTY'S TEACHER'S UNION PRESIDENT--
NBC-2'S KIM BROWN REPORTS.

EVEN ON A WEEKEND FILLED WITH PLAY--
EDUCATION IS STILL A TOP PRIORITY FOR PARENTS.
I worry about programs being cut and the important parts of programs that help him grow as a child.
IN 20-11, GOVERNOR SCOTT CUT ONE BILLION FROM SCHOOLS--
BUT THIS YEAR- HE RESTORED THAT MONEY.
I'm afraid as time goes on there's going to be less emphasis on education and the proper teachers, the funding for teachers so teachers aren't going to want to teach.
JUST THREE DAYS AFTER GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT STOPPED AT LEXINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL IN FORT MYERS AND MET PRIVATELY WITH TEACHERS--
NATS
AND A FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER WITH TOP EDUCATION UNION LEADERS.
THE GOVERNOR NOW SAYS HE WANTS TO *AVOID MAKING CUTS TO EDUCATION.
HIS GOAL -- BETTER PREPARING STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE AND CAREERS.
I think he's starting to listen to parents and teachers and administrators that if you want to have a good educational system, you can't keep cutting cutting cutting.
DONNA MUTZENARD IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ISLAND COAST F-E-A WHICH HANDLES UNION BUSINESS.
SHE SAYS TEACHERS TALKED TO THE GOVERNOR ABOUT FUNDING. AND THIS LATEST PUSH TO PRESERVE EDUCATION-- MAY STEM PARTLY FROM THAT.
I think he's hearing the same things from everybody in the state and I think that's making an impression.
SCOTT ALSO SAYS AND IF THERE'S ENOUGH MONEY,
HE'LL AGAIN PUSH FOR AN INCREASE.
The fact that he wants to keep money that's great. But I hope he's even thinking about adding a bit more.
SOME PARENTS WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SEE IT HAPPEN TOO.
TO PAY FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND OTHER PROGRAMS.
Especially the liberal arts and stuff I think there should be much more art programs than there is.

FARMWORKERS HAVE BEEN FIGHTING FOR BETTER PAY AND CONDITIONS FOR YEARS--
AN AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED TO PAY THEM AN ADDITIONAL PENNY PER POUND FOR THEIR WORK- THAT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE MUCH BUT IT'S A 64% *INCREASE--
BUT NOT EVERY RETAILER HAS AGREED TO PAY THAT ADDITIONAL AMOUNT.

AT THE PUBLIX ON VANDERBILT BEACH ROAD--
THE GROUP DELIVERED A LETTER TO MANAGEMENT ASKING THE COMPANY TO SIGN A FAIR FOOD AGREEMENT- WHICH WOULD SECURE A WAGE INCREASE AND BASIC LABOR PROTECTION FOR WORKERS IN FLORIDA FIELDS.
BURGER KING AND TACO BELL HAVE SIGNED THE AGREEMENT-- THE COALITION OF IMMOKALEE WORKERS HAS BEEN PUSHING PUBLIX AND CHIPOTLE TO DO THE SAME.

There was a lot of exploitation of workers, mistreating of women, there's was a bit of everything and there were no consequences for anybody but now with this program for fair food workers are seeing a new day

WIDESPREAD RAIN NEXT WEEK
We picked up a good soaking this afternoon. Guess what? Heavier rains are in our future.
I'm watching an area of low pressure in the upper portions of the atmosphere. It's going to push east, and as it inches closer and closer to Florida - we'll see more clouds and downpours.
You'll start seeing the changes on Sunday. There will be a brief shower or two early, and the more robust rains come in during the 4 to 8 PM time frame. Nothing looks to be severe, but a strong storm cell or two is possible. There are many outdoor events tomorrow, and if you decide to go. Have something to keep you dry!
Monday, there will be a more clouds and yet again another early morning shower. After 10 AM there will be a brief lull in the activity. It then comes back after 2 PM.
Monday through late next week there will be intervals of rain. There will be a glimpse or two of sunshine, but for overall there will be more clouds than sun. It'll be a gloomy few days with the rain and clouds, but it won't be as warm! Highs will only get into the upper 80s after Monday.
If you decide to hit the waters tomorrow, there will be a brisk wind from the east. It'll cause the seas to range from 2 to 3 feet, and the inland waterways will be moderately choppy.
Lastly, the tropics are active with Hurricane Nadine, and another area of disturbed weather to Nadine's south. Nadine will not effect the United States. It's a "fish storm" and will stay in the Atlantic! However, there's a batch of clouds to Nadine's south that deserves watching. Models have it pushing near southwest Florida within the next 10 days. Obviously things can and will change in that amount of time. Don't worry, just stay tuned with us. We will have the latest information for you!
