GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

TODAY IS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15TH.

WE'LL HAVE A LOOK AT TODAY'S TOP STORIES IN JUST A MINUTE.

BUT FIRST METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING JOINS US WITH YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

TODAY'S WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A classic late summer weekend is setting up for Southwest Florida over the next couple days with rain and storms being a good bet each afternoon.

Here's how your Saturday plays out. We'll start the day with abundant sunshine and just a few patchy clouds. Temperatures will start off in the 70s but will quickly climb into the mid to upper 80s by midday. Puffy, fair weather clouds will continue to build through the early afternoon, and we'll be watching for showers to start moving in from 3 p.m. and beyond. A few downpours will even be possible earlier in the day, but most of these will be isolated and focused inland. The rain will be most widespread between 3-7 p.m. with areas closer to the coast getting hit the hardest. Rain chances will range from 50-60%.

Today's rain will work from east to west, making the journey from the interior toward the coast. Some storms may produce heavy rain, frequent lightning, and gusty winds. As we get closer to sunset, the bulk of the rain will move offshore, and we'll be left with a partly cloudy to mostly clear sky through the overnight.

Sunday will almost be a carbon copy of today's weather: lots of morning sun along with hot and humid air, then several heavy downpours developing during the afternoon.

Temperatures both Saturday and Sunday will peak in the upper 80s and lower 90s, but the "feels like" temperature will be close to 100. Our overnight lows will cool to the mid 70s, which is pretty close to average for this time of year.

Down the road we'll likely be talking about some higher rain chances Tuesday and Wednesday in association with increasing moisture in advance of a cool front that will stall over Central Florida. The front unfortunately won't have enough steam to clear us and cool us off, but we will see the rainy side of the front. As a result, Tuesday and Wednesday will be the most active days of the week with more clouds expected along with higher than normal rain chances.

Some slightly drier air will move in through the second half of next week, making way for more sunshine and lower rain chances.

The tropics look pretty quiet aside from Hurricane Nadine in the open Atlantic. Nadine is now turned away from the U.S. mainland and is east bound. There's also weak tropical wave approaching the Windward Islands, but environmental conditions are not favorable for development. The National Hurricane Center gives this disturbance a 10% chance of forming into a tropical cyclone over the next couple days. Return to index of stories...

IN THE SPECTRUM OF INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASES, CROHN'S DISEASE AND ULCERATIVE COLITIS ARE THE TWO HEAVY WEIGHTS. THEY SHARE SYMPTOMS- BUT ARE VERY DIFFERENT. A KEY DISTINCTION: ULCERATIVE COLITIS IS LOCALIZED.

DR. MICHAEL WEISS/GASTROENTEROLOGIST

RUNS:

:56 It always starts in the rectum and then proceeds up the colon, it can involve part of the colon or the entire colon.

In Crohn's disease, inflammation CAN occur anywhere along the digestive tract.

DR. MICHAEL WEISS/GASTROENTEROLOGIST

RUNS:

12:23 Crohn's disease can affect the small intestine, there's more issues with potentially malabsorption of nutrients.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

There's also something in the way they move. Ulcerative colitis progresses in a continuous pattern, while Crohn's skips around to different organs. It can also form lesions while leaving neighboring tissue untouched. It leads to what doctors call a 'cobblestone' appearance.

BOTH THESE ILLNESSES ARE AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES. EACH CHARACTERIZED BY CHRONIC INFLAMMATION.

DR. MICHAEL WEISS/GASTROENTEROLOGIST

RUNS:

:22 We don't know what causes that. The theories are that it could be a virus or a bacteria, maybe food antigens.

THE INFLAMMATION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ASSOCIATED PAIN, CRAMPS, DIARRHEA AND BLEEDING. OTHER SYMPTOMS ARE WEIGHT LOSS AND FATIGUE. TREATMENTS FOR BOTH ARE MEANT TO CONTROL INFLAMMATION.

DR. MICHAEL WEISS/GASTROENTEROLOGIST

RUNS:

9:26 We have these newer medications which are given either by IV infusion or injection. And these are medicines that are developed as antibodies against some of the factors that really promote that inflammation. Generally we can get somebody completely in remission and retain them in remission.

DOCTORS BELIEVE PATIENTS WITH EITHER FORM OF BOWEL DISEASE, CAN LEAD A NORMAL AND PRODUCTIVE LIFE. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

GOOD MORNING-1 SHOT

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M KELLY CRESWELL.

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER

FINAL WEATHER-WX WALL
