GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT NOW SAYS HE WILL PUSH LAWMAKERS TO AVOID CUTS TO THE EDUCATION BUDGET THIS YEAR.
THIS NEWS COMES AFTER A DINNER WITH EDUCATION UNION OFFICIALS-
INCLUDING LEE COUNTY'S TEACHER'S UNION PRESIDENT--
NBC-2'S KIM BROWN EXPLAINS.

EVEN ON A WEEKEND FILLED WITH PLAY--
EDUCATION IS STILL A TOP PRIORITY FOR PARENTS.
I worry about programs being cut and the important parts of programs that help him grow as a child.
IN 20-11, GOVERNOR SCOTT CUT ONE BILLION FROM SCHOOLS--
BUT THIS YEAR- HE RESTORED THAT MONEY.
I'm afraid as time goes on there's going to be less emphasis on education and the proper teachers, the funding for teachers so teachers aren't going to want to teach.
JUST THREE DAYS AFTER GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT STOPPED AT LEXINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL IN FORT MYERS AND MET PRIVATELY WITH TEACHERS--
NATS
AND A FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER WITH TOP EDUCATION UNION LEADERS.
THE GOVERNOR NOW SAYS HE WANTS TO *AVOID MAKING CUTS TO EDUCATION.
HIS GOAL -- BETTER PREPARING STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE AND CAREERS.
I think he's starting to listen to parents and teachers and administrators that if you want to have a good educational system, you can't keep cutting cutting cutting.
DONNA MUTZENARD IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ISLAND COAST F-E-A WHICH HANDLES UNION BUSINESS.
SHE SAYS TEACHERS TALKED TO THE GOVERNOR ABOUT FUNDING. AND THIS LATEST PUSH TO PRESERVE EDUCATION-- MAY STEM PARTLY FROM THAT.
I think he's hearing the same things from everybody in the state and I think that's making an impression.
SCOTT ALSO SAYS AND IF THERE'S ENOUGH MONEY,
HE'LL AGAIN PUSH FOR AN INCREASE.
The fact that he wants to keep money that's great. But I hope he's even thinking about adding a bit more.
SOME PARENTS WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SEE IT HAPPEN TOO.
TO PAY FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND OTHER PROGRAMS.
Especially the liberal arts and stuff I think there should be much more art programs than there is.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Chalk up another day of morning sun and afternoon storms as moisture remains plentiful across Southwest Florida through the second half of our weekend.
Our sky will stay fairly quiet this morning, but we'll start things off with a few more clouds compared to Saturday. Our morning will stay mostly dry as well, but the window will open up for several showers and storms this afternoon. The favored spots for rain will again be close to the coast and the urban corridor, so areas from I-75 to the beaches will see the best chance of rain through the afternoon.
Today's downpours will drift slowly from east to west, and many spots may pick up between 1-2 inches of rain. We'll also see the potential for frequent lighting and some gusty winds inside some of the stronger storms.
Like Saturday, the bulk of the rain will push offshore close to sunset, and our weather will stay dry through most of the overnight.
In the temperatures department today, afternoon highs should manage to push 90 in most spots, and our overnight lows will cool into the mid 70s.
By Monday we'll see the potential for a few morning showers close to the coast and then a scattering of showers area wide through the afternoon. Our sky will feature partial sunshine, and temperatures should warm close to 90.
Tuesday and Wednesday still look to be the most active days this week as a weak front stalls over Central and South Florida. Our winds will be swiftly coming off the gulf both days, keeping the moist air flowing into Southwest Florida. We'll notice higher rain chances both days along with more cloud cover and highs only in the mid to upper 80s.
Rain chances will start to slip a little through the second half of the week, but we'll still see a decent chance for a few showers and storms, mainly during the afternoon.

NBC2 IS CONTINUING TO FOLLOW THE LATEST THIS MORNING ON THE VIOLENCE OVERSEAS.
AUTHORITIES LOOKING INTO THE U-S CONSULATE KILLINGS IN LIBYA HAVE DELAYED THEIR ARRIVAL TO THE REGION AS VIOLENCE RAGES ON-
PROTESTORS ACROSS THE MIDDLE EAST HAVE TAKEN TO THE STREETS-
FUELED BY AN ANTI-ISLAM FILM RELEASED BY AN AMERICAN FILMMAKER.
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYS THOSE WHO KILLED FOUR AMERICANS WILL BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE.
CRISTINA MUTCHLER REPORTS.

ANTI-U-S PROTESTS FOLLOWING THE U-S CONSULATE KILLINGS IN LIBYA HAVE SPREAD EVEN FURTHER ACROSS THE GLOBE.
IN AUSTRALIA, HUNDREDS OF PROTESTERS DEMONSTRATED OUTSIDE OF THE AMERICAN CONSULATE IN SYDNEY.
IN THE MIDDLE EAST, THOUSANDS OF MUSLIMS HAVE TAKEN TO THE STREETS.
FBI OFFICIALS INVESTIGATING THE KILLINGS IN BENGHAZI HAVE PUT OFF THEIR VISIT UNTIL THE VOLATILE REGION IS SAFER.
The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the series of violent attacks against embassies and consulate premises of member states in multiple locations.
PROTESTERS ARE RAGING OVER AN ANTI-ISLAM FILM *THIS* AMERICAN FILMMAKER HAS PUT OUT. NAKOULA BASSELEY NAKOULA HAS BEEN INTERVIEWED BY AUTHORITIES.
IN HIS WEEKLY ADDRESS, PRESIDENT OBAMA PROMISED JUSTICE FOR THOSE WHO KILLED U-S AMABASSADOR TO LIBYA CHRIS STEVENS AND THREE OTHER AMERICANS AT THE CONSULATE.
There is never any justification for violence. There is no religion that condones the targeting of innocent men and women. There is no excuse for attacks on our Embassies and Consulates. And so long as I am Commander-in-Chief, the United States will never tolerate efforts to harm our fellow Americans.
SOME SAY TUESDAY'S ATTACK WAS PLANNED.
It was a deliberate and pre-planned attack in every sense of the word. I was given enough details by witnesses.
U-S OFFICIALS SAY THEY HAVE NO EVIDENCE THAT THE ATTACK WAS PREMEDITATED.
BUT AS CALM APPEARED TO BE RESTORED IN DOWNTOWN CAIRO SATURDAY, THE SCENE OF THE FIRST PROTEST GIVES HOPE THAT OTHER DEMONSTRATIONS WILL FOLLOW SUIT.
I'M CRISTINA MUTCHLER REPORTING.

AN AMERICAN UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR IS FACING BACKLASH AFTER NURSING HER CHILD DURING CLASS.
LISA SYLVESTER HAS DETAILS.
Return to index of stories...
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR ADRIENNE PINE IS STARTING HER FOURTH YEAR AT AMERICAN UNIVERSITY.
THE SINGLE MOM NORMALLY LEAVES HER DAUGHTER LEE AT A WASHINGTON DAY CARE WHILE AT WORK.
BUT ON THE FIRST DAY OF FALL CLASSES HER 11 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER WOKE UP WITH A SLIGHT FEVER.
I didn't have emergency day care and I couldn't bring her to the regular day care. So I was faced with difficult choice of being there for my students, which as a professional is the most important thing for me to do, or being there for my daughter. And the only way I could do both of those was bring my daughter to class.
DURING HER CLASS OF 40 STUDENTS. HER DAUGHTER BEGAN FUSSING.
SHE WAS HUNGRY.
SO PINE - WHO SAYS SHE HAS NURSED HER DAUGHTER AT OTHER PUBLIC PLACES INCLUDING THE PARKS AND AIRPLANES. EVEN SEVERAL LOCATIONS ON CAMPUS.
BREASTFED HER DAUGHTER DURING CLASS.
I very discreetly fed her. I don't believe any part of my breast was showing. I don't think my nipple was showing. The most important thing for me was feeding her and within a couple of minutes she fell asleep.
ONE STUDENT JAKE CARIAS WAS SHOCKED.
LATER TWEETING:
SEX, GENDER, AND CULTURE PROFESSOR, TOTAL FEMINIST, WALKS IN WITH HER BABY, MIDWAY THROUGH CLASS BREAST FEEDING TIME #WTF.
CARIAS SPOKE TO CNN
She could have taken a sick day, stayed with the child, the TA would have came into the class, read the syllabus, gave us an explanation as to why she wasn't there, our class would have left early, and nobody would have complained. There would have been no problems at all. A professor missing a class on occasion is perfectly normal- there's nothing wrong with that. She kind of blew it up in the wrong way.
PINE LASHED OUT AT A UNIVERSITY STUDENT REPORTER IN A SCATHING BLOG WHO WAS WRITING AN ARTICLE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED.
BUT PINE INSISTS HER INTENTION WAS NEVER TO BE WHAT SHE CALLS A BREAST-FEEDING ACTIVIST.
STUDENT REACTION ON CAMPUS WAS MIXED-
I don't think she was trying to be like look what I can do- I thought she was just feeding her child.
For the first day of class, I think it's probably a little inappropriate
I understand it's like a natural thing and part of human nature, but at the same time, we're not used to that- especially as college students and who've probably never had a child.
PINE SAYS THERE IS A MUCH LARGER ISSUE. THAT THERE ARE TOUGH CHOICES PARTICULARLY FOR WORKING MOTHERS.
MANY WHO GRAPPLE WITH HOW TO BALANCE WORK DEMANDS WITH A SICK CHILD.
If I had bottle-fed my daughter I would not have been attacked for that. If a male professor had brought his child to class the response would be 'how sweet, how cute how fatherly of him, whereas as a woman when i to that you know O get attacked.
I ASKED ADRIENNE PINE IF THE SITUATION WHERE THE SAME WOULD SHE DO IT AGAIN. SHE SAYS PROBABLY NOT. SHE DIDN'T EXPECT THIS BACKLASH. SHE SAYS SHE'S LEARNED PEOPLE ARE STILL SQUEAMISH ABOUT PUBLIC BREASTFEEDING. AND SHE HOPES THIS BEGIN A NEW CONVERSATION ABOUT THE NEED FOR ADEQUATE CHILD CARE OPTIONS FOR WORKING PARENTS. PETTING A DOG OR GETTING A BIG SLOPPY DOG KISS MAY NOT LEAD TO A MEDICAL MIRACLE, BUT IT'S PROVEN TO BOOST THE SPIRITS OF PEOPLE FIGHTING TO GET WELL.
WELL, TODAY. A THERAPY DOG WHO HAS SPENT YEARS VISITING CANCER PATIENTS WAS BACK ON THE JOB. EVEN THOUGH CONRAD THE LABORADOR. IS *ALSO* FIGHTING CANCER.

IT WAS CLEAR THE ENTIRE STAFF KNOWS CONRAD.
"Hello Conrad!! We've been missing you."
AFTER YEARS OF VISITING PATIENTS. CONRAD'S MISSED SOME TIME. FOR GOOD REASON.

"He can't eat, the cancer's in his nose. Just had radiation this morning, I'm done and I'm ready to go. C'mon Buddy, let's go visit. This is Conrad, he's going through cancer treatments for bone cancer, AWW!"
THE PATIENTS CLEARLY LIKE THEIR CANINE PALS. AND WISH THE BEST FOR THIS 8 YEAR OLD LAB.
"Everything's so chaotic and you worry about things and you get to pet an animal or be with an animal, and you don't think about the scope of things, it takes the pressure off."
"Just one smile makes it worth all our time."
"Come here bud, my dog's going to be jealous."
"Just nice to have something that sort of distracts you."
PATIENTS SAY DOGS ARE GREAT BECAUSE.
"They don't pity you, they don't do anything, they just come up and show you some love, and it's nice. I love animals so for me it's really nice."
THE COMPANIONSHIP WAS THE ULTIMATE REWARD. BUT A WAY TO A DOG'S HEART.
"Oh yea, did he get it??"
WELLL. YOU KNOW.
