This Morning's commuter mess is spilling into an evening commuter problem--causing many delays.

Take sound

Alexandra Cisneros, Driver

"they all understood because a lot of patients there were also late for their appointments."

A chain of events would cause an all day ordeal on this section of Palm Beach Boulevard near the i-75 overpass. FHP says for some unknown reason, the dump truck driver, Michael Maness had the bed of the truck up--striking a traffic light, sign, and overpass, then flipping on its side. Fuel spilled all over, causing slippery road conditions. The overpass was deemed safe, the road wasn't.

Take sound

Dave Parks, project spokesperson

"the lanes where the diesel has been spilled are pretty slick and the best way for a long term fix is to resurface that asphalt."

Crews and equipment had to come up from collier county to dig up the old asphalt and repave it over.

All day, FHP urged drivers to avoid this area if possible, and if not, just be patient.

Take sound

Alexandra Cisneros, Driver

"what can you do right? It happens." Return to index of stories...

Angela cisneros is one of two hundred people who have signed an online petition urging the collier county sheriffs office to not renew its 287 g deportation program.

Angela cisneros

"35:04 I think its un-american, I think its unconstitutional"

The program allows trained deputies to act as immigration officers.

Cisneros says 287g has instilled fear in the immigrant community. She says people are afraid to report crimes because the same officers there to help them, have the authority to turn them over to immigration and customs enforcement.

Angela

31:10 it's causing fear in the community people are afraid to come forward

Sheriff kevin rambosk disagrees. He says the community wants and needs the program to stay safe. He plans to renew 287g for another 3 years.

41:50 they want us to make sure the streets are safe.

Cisneros says deputies don't just target criminals-- they're looking for anyone with an illegal status-- resulting in low priority deportations.

Angela

35:50 regardless of how you got here, if you're somebody who is not committing any crimes except for trying to go to work and maybe doesn't have a drivers license, I think stopping those people and deporting them is a great injustice and also a waste of our tax dollars 10

Sheriff rambosk insists deputies aren't targeting illegal immigrants-- they're only looking for criminals with a record.

49:19 we don't go into businesses, we don't go into farm fields, we don't go into peoples homes to ask if they're here lawfully. 27 if you are arrested for a crime well determine if you're here lawfully as we do every single person that gets arrested in collier county Return to index of stories...
