Often times around Southwest Florida, wind direction is a critical player in determining how our weather unfolds each day. Today looks like one of those days when a change in wind direction will lead to some considerable changes in our weather starting today.
Winds have now started shifting from the southeast to the southwest, which will open the door for higher rain chances over the next couple days.
The rain will also get an earlier start both today and Wednesday, so look for scattered showers to develop during the early morning, moving from the coast and spreading inland. As we progress through the morning , the showers will likely increase in coverage and intensity. It looks as though the prime time for rain today for most of us will be during the middle of the day from the late morning through the early afternoon.
Much of the rain will build inland later in the day, but we'll also be watching for the possibility of more storms rolling in from the northwest this evening or tonight. The bottom line is today will be one of those days where the air unsettled and moist enough that we can't promise any part of the day will be completely dry.
Even through the overnight we'll see the potential for some isolated rain and rumbles of thunder, and by Wednesday morning showers will again start moving in off the gulf.
Not only will we see a change in wind direction over the next couple days, but we'll also notice a change in wind speed. Winds will ramp up a bit during the day, making our weather a little breezy. Look for wind gusts to peak near 20-25 mph.
By Thursday rain coverage will start to drop a little, but there will still be some scattered showers around, primarily during the afternoon.
The threat of scattered late-day showers and storms continues Friday and into the upcoming weekend.

FIRST AT FOUR - WHY AUTHORITIES HAVE SOME EXPLAINING TO DO TODAY.
Return to index of stories...
MARKETS WERE PRETTY MUCH FLAT TODAY WITH BOTH THE S & P 500 AND DOW TRADING SLIGHTLY.
NICK, WHY DOWN TODAY AFTER THE SPIKES LAST WEEK AND WHAT SHOULD INVESTORS BE FOCUSING ON NOW?
Return to index of stories...
Well, first, I think it's important to point out that the market, as measured by the S&P500, is now up an amazing 16% year to date.
Return to index of stories...
For a year riddled with global uncertainties such as the debt crisis in Europe, a possible hard landing in the world's second largest economy China, all the chatter about the US falling off of the fiscal cliff at the end of the year, and more recently tensions mounting in the Middle East, this has been a phenomenal year for stocks.
So to see a couple lackluster days in the markets even after the Fed's announcement of further stimulus last Thursday tells me a few things.
First, markets can only go up so much and 16% in the first nine months isn't too shabby.
Second, the fact that we didn't see a significant follow through in last week's market rally tells me that the majority of this Fed announcement was already baked into the cake.
Three, investors are still concerned about the uncertainties I just pointed out a minutes ago.
And of course, it's most likely a combination of all three of these things that give the markets reason to pause and take a breather here in the past few days. But with all of the excitement the markets have generated in the last four or five months, it's important that you don't lose sight of all the other things you can do to successfully get to and through retirement.
And probably the most important thing you can do right now, particularly after such a significant rise in the stock market in just the past four months is review your asset allocation and understand your downside risk. It's very likely that you now have a significantly higher percentage of equities in your portfolio which in turn will increase your downside risk. It will be necessary for you to rebalance your portfolio to align with your overall investment objective.
And now that we're approaching the end of the 3rd quarter, don't forget about your year-end planning check list. There are several things you should be thinking about doing the last three months of the year and I'll touch on just a few of them.
So, in October, for all of you on Medicare, review your Medicare Part D choices. The open window for enrolling or changing plans is October 15th to December 7th. Learn about the new 3.8% Medicare tax on investment income that becomes effective January 1st and learn about year-end tax strategies that you can take advantage of to reduce your 2013 Medicare tax liability.

FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A REASON TO CELEBRATE FOR PRINCE WILLIAM AND HIS WIFE ON THE LAST STOP OF THEIR PACIFIC TOUR.
A FRENCH COURT TODAY ORDERED THE PUBLISHER OF THE FRENCH GOSSIP MAGAZINE "CLOSER" TO CEASE PUBLICATION OF THE TOPLESS PICTURES OF KATE AND HAND OVER ITS COPIES OF THE PHOTOS WITHIN 24 HOURS.
"It appears to give satisfaction entirely to the royal couple."
A CRIMINAL COMPLAINT IS ALSO IN THE WORKS AGAINST THE PHOTOGRAPHER WHO TOOK THE PICTURES AS THE COUPLE SUNBATHED AT THIS VILLA IN SOUTHERN FRANCE.
TODAY'S RULING ISN'T A COMPLETE VICTORY.
THE PHOTOS HAVE ALREADY BEEN PUBLISHED IN IRELAND AND ITALY AND THE FRENCH MAGAZINE "CLOSER" COULD TECHNICALLY STILL USE ANY PICTURES THAT DIDN'T APPEAR IN ITS EARLIER EDITION.
"Clearly the harm has been done, thousands, if not tens of thousands of copies are now in public circulation."
BUT TODAY'S COURT DECISION WILL PREVENT THE MAGAZINE FROM SELLING THE PHOTOGRAPHS AND MAY REDUCE THE ATTENTION ON THE ROYAL COUPLE.
