As 55 year old robert kelly recovers in the hospital, he's starting to piece together how a brave young boy may have saved his life.
Robert
46:03 wound up in the hospital, don't know what happened.
Kelly was driving his last student home for the day when he passed out at the wheel of his bus.
His last passenger, 11 year old jackson bonar jumped into action.
Jackson
:24 he started curving he made a strange face at me and started going toward a tree so I put my foot on the brakes, bit the bus was still moving so I turned the steering wheel so the airbag wouldn't go out and hurt him anymore.
The bus hit this fence-- and jackson immediately called his mom.
Paula bonar
:48 he was just screaming in the phone and I thought he was playing around and I just yelled at him stop I can't understand you. He said mom the bus driver he just had a stroke he just had a heart attack I called 911 and headed down to the bus.
Mom and a witness called for help.
911 call:
:50 I saw him when he hit the fence he was rolling and he's unconscious."
Kelly and his family are in awe of jacksons courage.
Kathleen kelly, wife
54:15 amazing. He's just a little brave man isn't he? I mean, how do you do that? 11 years old, that's amazing. I've seen grown folks that don't react as quickly.
While doctors still don't know what happened to kelly-- he says he feels as healthy as ever, and can't wait to get out of the hospital so he can thank jackson for diverting a possible disaster.
Robert
50:57 I'd give him a big hug, just give him a big hug and thank him from the bottom of my heart, nice little boy.
Return to index of stories...
I'm told jackson knew what to do because he has experience driving golf carts and four wheelers.
Kelly should be out of the hospital and back on his bus route in a day or two.

A CAMPAIGN SIGN THAT SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS --
IS DEFACED.
A CASE OF DIRTY POLITICS --
OR A HATE CRIME?
PETER RICHTER --
PLANS TO ENLIST THE HELP OF THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE TO FIND OUT.
Return to index of stories...
THE LIBERTARIAN IS RUNNING FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE.
NBC2'S SAUNDRA WEATHERS JUST TALKED WITH HIM.AND HIS OPPONENT.
Return to index of stories...
It's an image associated with hate-and it's painted smack dab on the forehead of State representative candidate, Peter Richter.
My first reaction was to take it down.
But Richter says he hasn't had the tools or the time to remove his campaign sign with the offensive symbol and the painted mustache.
So people driving down U-S 41 near CENTER STREET-JUST NORTH OF PINE RIDGE ROAD-will see it, for now.
I'm disappointed that people have to resort to this instead of relying on civil discourse.
We reached out to Richter's opponent Kathleen Passidomo by phone today and she agrees.
It's a terrible thing to do. I certainly do not condone it.
she insists this vandalism isn't the work of her campaign.
did you know anything about this?
I had no idea. As I mentioned to you, I'm out of town in Virginia getting ready for my daughters wedding.
The campaign sign was erected a couple days ago in Michael Pgorzynski's front yard.
But he says vandals must have painted it last night.
wow. That's all, wow. I couldn't believe someone would actually do that to a sign.
If you take a closer look at the sign you can see a square where it appears a stencil was used to paint this swastika. Which leads supporters to believe this vandalism was pre planned.
And it isn't the first time someone has defaced a campaign sign.
In 2010 someone defaced Commissioner Georgia Hiller's campaign signs-changing Hiller to Hitler.
And in the last four months the sheriff's office says they've gotten reports of swastika's painted in other places.
So far no arrests.
As for Richter, he says he'll cover up the hateful image and try and keep a good attitude for Election Day.
some people say I look better with a mustache.

AD LIB WEATHER TEASE
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Clouds have been in abundance this afternoon with a few peaks of sunshine here and there, however the rain has been few and far between with most of Southwest Florida staying mostly dry.
A cold front has draped itself across the central part of the state and will continue to washout through Thursday. This will keep our weather in a moist west to southwesterly flow off the Gulf of Mexico with the possibility of a few showers and storms developing throughout the evening hours. With this set up, any rain that does develop should favor the Lake Okeechobee and inland spots before winding up along the east coast this evening.
Tonight, our skies will see some partial clearing with an isolated shower or two. Otherwise overnight lows will settle into the middle 70s along the urban corridor with upper 70s along our beach locations.
With a tropical airmass in place and steering winds remaining out of the southwest, it will be a mild and muggy start to the day with the vast majority of Southwest Florida staying dry. A few showers could get going by the mid day hours before rain gets pushed deeper inland with the seabreeze by the afternoon. With a bit more sunshine for our Thursday, temperatures should climb to near normal values in the lower 90s but with extra humidity, it will feel a bit hotter than what the thermometer is actually reading.
Friday and into the weekend our weather conditions will be improving as light easterly winds take over. This will bring our dry and sunny mornings back with mainly afternoon showers and storms.
In the tropics, Tropical Storm Nadine has moved very little as it remains stationary. Through Friday it is expected to take an easterly track keeping it just to the south of the Azores. Otherwise, the tropics look to stay fairly quiet over the next 7 days.
