Phil Bennett confronts what he calls "his sins" in front of his ex wife, closest friends, and a judge who had Bennett's future in his hands.
The accountant faced up to two centuries in prison -- for embezzling more than a million dollars from charities, a city government, and an election campaign.
While Bennett called his method "simplistic" of writing checks out to himself, state investigators call it bold move where he betrayed others' interest to serve his bottom line.
A sea of supporters wanted Bennett to serve just probation -- and argued the former cpa's community work should outweigh his criminal actions.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
Here's the PM discussion. Don't forget to update the weather video!
NUMEROUS STORMS FOR SATURDAY
This weekend will be a split decision. Saturday will be cloudy and rainy while Sunday will have more sunshine and less rain.
What I'm saying - Sunday is the day you'll want to go outside!
There's three features at play in our weather for the next two days. First is a tropical wave sitting to our southeast, next an old frontal boundary, and lastly a big low pressure center in the upper atmosphere. They're all working together to give us the not so great weather.
The good news - we will see breaks in the clouds from time to time, and Sunday will be very sunny.
Tropical type downpours will be numerous and widespread tomorrow. Coastal showers early? Yes, but they'll be very isolated. The widespread and robust downpours will occur between 2 to 7 PM.
Sunday through Tuesday looks to be normal. By "normal" I mean partly sunny skies and isolated thunderstorms each evening.
Highs will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s.
Also, nothing of interest in the tropics for southwest Florida right!

THE NETWORKS OF NBC KICKING OFF THEIR THIRD ANNUAL EDUCATION SUMMIT THIS WEEKEND IN NEW YORK CITY.

ONE IDEA IS TO SEPARATE BOYS AND GIRLS IN THE CLASSROOM.

IN THE DROP OFF LINE AT FRANKLIN BOYS PREPARATORY ACADEMY, PARENTS ARE QUICK TO POINT OUT THE BENEFITS OF HAVING THEIR SONS IN A SINGLE GENDER ENVIRONMENT.
"I believe this school is providing an environment to where they are showing the boys how to become men."
"Now they can concentrate on what they are in school for."
FROM THAT DROP OFF LINE TO THE HALLWAYS, FRANKLIN HAS A DIFFERENT FEEL THAN THE TRADITIONAL MIDDLE SCHOOL.
IT'S COMMON TO SEE THE PRINCIPAL IN THE HALLWAY GREETING STUDENTS AS THEY HEAD TO CLASS FOR THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE AND THE SCHOOL CREED.
"I will become a man of responsibility, respect, honesty. "
THE CREED OUTLINES THE NINE CORE VALUES THE SCHOOL TRIES TO INSTILL IN EACH STUDENT, SOMETHING THE BOYS TAKE TO HEART.
"It helps you be a gentleman."
"It's different because it shows you how to be a man of distinction."
BUT IT'S MORE THAN JUST THE CREED, THE SCHOOL'S FOCUS IS ON GIVING THE BOYS THE BEST EDUCATION POSSIBLE TAILORED TO A BOY'S PERSONALITY AND STYLE OF LEARNING.
"It's focusing on the individual gender and focusing on their needs and their development and their educational level."
SOME EDUCATORS BELIEVE REACHING THAT LEVEL MEANT TAKING GIRLS OUT OF THE EQUATION.
"I think taking out the distraction of girls when it comes to middle school boys has had a tremendous impact on our students here. They've been able to focus on their class work."
SOMETHING THE BOYS AGREE WITH.
"It makes me focus more on my academics."
"It's less annoying without girls and stuff. You are more focused and concentrating on what you are supposed to be doing and stuff."
AND WHAT THESE BOYS ARE DOING IS SETTING AN EXAMPLE FOR OTHERS AS THEY CONTINUE THEIR JOURNEY TO BECOMING MEN OF INTEGRITY.

"The American operation right now just isn't reliable. There have been too many late flights, too many missed connections, too many canceled flights, too many people left stranded."
AND THERE'S SOMETHING ELSE THAT COULD MEAN BAD NEWS FOR PASSENGERS:
WITH AMERICAN AIRLINES IN BANKRUPTCY, US AIRWAYS IS AGGRESSIVELY PUSHING FOR A MERGER TO TAKE ON UNITED AND DELTA.
"By putting these two airlines together, you create a third airline that can compete against those two much larger carriers - that's good for consumers, that's good for employees of both companies."
AN AMERICAN MERGER WITH US AIRWAYS WOULD FOLLOW OTHER MERGERS IN RECENT YEARS, AS THE COUNTRY LOST SOME OF ITS OLDEST CARRIERS:
-CONTINENTAL MERGED WITH UNITED TO BECOME THE WORLD'S BIGGEST AIRLINE.
-NORTHWEST WITH DELTA.
-AIRTRAIN WITH SOUTHWEST.

That's right guys, Naples Municipal Airport hasn't had a commercial flight on its runways since 2008 and as we take a look at our mast cam you can see the runways are generally filled with smaller private planes. But that could all change soon with Jetblue airlines looking to make its way to Collier County.
Return to index of stories...
Commissioners with the Naples Airport are in talks with JetBlue to bring its commercial service to Collier County.
The Airport currently enforces a 75,000 pound weight restriction for its runways but is looking to work with the Federal Aviation Administration to allow flights of up to 115,000 pounds.
While some neighbors in the area are against the idea, officials with the airport say it could bring a much needed boost of business to the entire community.

DR. JACOB GOLDBERGER/GENERAL SURGEON
RUNS:
12:25 There are two components with thyroid surgery. One is a question of a cancer. The other question, the other issue is enlargement of the gland. When the gland gets larger and larger, sometimes you can't swallow, have trouble breathing.
WHEN A GROWTH IN THE THYROID IS CANCEROUS, THE ENTIRE GLAND IS MOST OFTEN REMOVED. IT USED TO BE major surgery LEAVING BEHIND a large, unattractive incision across the neck.
DR. JACOB GOLDBERGER/GENERAL SURGEON
RUNS:
10:54 Unlike doing surgery to the abdominal cavity or the legs, the neck is a very, very important anatomical mark for most people. So they don't, feel comfortable with any encroachment of the neck.
AMY OSHIER/REPORTING
RUNS:
The neck is valuable real estate, and a big scar is a real concern for many people, especially when they want to be comfortable putting their 'best face' forward.
DR. JACOB GOLDBERGER/GENERAL SURGEON
RUNS:
10:54 What's reassuring is that we've developed techniques over years, that we can access to get into the thyroid with small incision, non-disfiguring incision. At the end of three or four months that you can't even tell you had surgery.
PEOPLE HEAL DIFFERENTLY SO SOME SCARS WILL BE MORE VISIBLE THAN OTHERS. BUT AN EXPERIENCED SURGEON, OPERATING THROUGH SMALLER INCISIONS CAN GO A LONG WAY IN HELPING YOU SAVE FACE.
DR. JACOB GOLDBERGER/GENERAL SURGEON
RUNS:
Particularly in people who have nice little creases. And that the patient is reassured that he will not walk around with a very deforming, ugly scar on the neck.
FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER.

FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...
