THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
A stream of tropical moisture flowing in from the Southwest will make for cloudy skies and scattered showers through your Saturday. The most active period for rain and storms will be during the afternoon, but some isolated rain will even be possible this morning.
It looks as though clouds will fill our sky through much of the day, but we should manage to see enough breaks to make for a few sunny periods from time to time. All the extra cloud cover will hold our temperatures below 90 degrees with most spots peaking in the mid to upper 80s through the afternoon.
The lack of heating this afternoon should keep today's storms from becoming too strong, but we'll still see the potential for some thunderstorms along with some heavy rain and frequent lightning.
Scattered showers will linger into this evening and tonight, but the rain will start to shrink in coverage after sunset. Our sky will stay mostly to partly cloudy overnight with temperatures cooling to the mid to low 70s.
By Sunday, the bulk of the tropical moisture we'll have over us today will get pushed southward, keeping the highest rain chances over southern portions of the viewing area. We'll likely be in store for more sun and fewer showers Sunday, but we'll still notice a decent amount of cloud cover.
Rain chances will back off a bit more Monday and Tuesday before more moisture starts building in by midweek, enhancing our rain chances through the second half of next week.
In the tropics, Nadine has lost its tropical status for now and continues to be no threat whatsoever to the U.S as it swirls in the far Eastern Atlantic. The rest of the tropics remains fairly quiet, and no tropical development is expected for the next several days.

WHEN SHE DIDN'T LET GO, HE KNOCKED HER DOWN AND SHE BEGAN YELLING.

IT'S TAKEN A MONTH-
BUT TODAY FIRED MEDSTAR PILOT ARNOLD MCALLISTER'S WORRIES ABOUT MEDSTAR'S *SUSPENSION - CAME FULL CIRCLE.
ARNOLD MCALLISTER 32:41 it's something we all talked about the day it happened, we actually talked about the availability of Aeromed. :46
FGCU STUDENTS CONNOR CEILLEY AND BRENT RACZKOWSKI- WRAPPED THIS PICKUP TRUCK AROUND A POWER POLE JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT.
MEDSTAR'S REPLACEMENT- AEROMED WAS IMMEDIATELY PUT ON STANDBY AT PAGE FIELD.
standup 52:09 Officials tell us Aeromed was called right away and they attempted to launch twice but they were taken out of service because of mechanical issues. Bayflight out of St. Pete was too far away and Collier County was called to respond, but they couldn't give an ETA. :23
COLLIER OFFICIALS TELL US THE REQUEST FOR MEDFLIGHT WAS *CANCELLED BEFORE THEY COULD CALCULATE AN E-T-A.
THROUGH A RECORDS REQUEST, NBC-2 DETERMINED IT WOULD TAKE AT *LEAST 14 MINUTES FOR COLLIER TO RESPOND TO THE SCENE--
WITH AN ADDITIONAL *6 MINUTES TO FLY TO THE HOSPITAL.
ARNOLD MCALLISTER 35:40 if they knew that they weren't going to get any support it's possible the people on the scene would've simply packaged the patient and started moving toward the hospital sooner. :49
BY THEN- OFFICIALS TELL US 30 MINUTES HAD PASSED SINCE THE ORIGINAL REQUEST FOR AEROMED'S HELP.
WE'RE TOLD IT TOOK ABOUT 16 ADDITIONAL MINUTES FOR CREWS TO DRIVE THE TEENS TO THE HOSPITAL.
SOMETHING MCCALLISTER SAYS NEVER WOULD'VE HAPPENED HAD MEDSTAR BEEN OPERATIONAL.
ARNOLD MCALLISTER 32:04 that's the point having a backup ship- if you have scheduled maintenance you move to the backup helicopter, if you have something that comes up unscheduled you have the helicopter ready to go. :14
MEDSTAR'S *NEWEST HELICOPTER WAS TO BE THE PRIMARY MACHINE FOR MEDICAL EMERGENCIES--
BUT THERE WAS A BACKUP- THE COUNTY'S *OLDER HELICOPTER--
IN CASE THE PRIMARY WAS DOWN.
ARNOLD MCALLISTER 32:16 as a routine practice pilots and crews when they came in on shift they would automatically check out the backup ship so if anything happened at all we could just move our personal equipment over to the backup helicopter. :28
Return to index of stories...
E-M-S CHIEF KIM DICKERSON SENT OUT A PRESS RELEASE STATING THE LACK OF A HELICOPTER DID NOT NEGATIVELY IMPACT THE PATIENT--

Gia Tutalo=Mote: It's called Dolphin Assisted Therapy
Alicia Spencer, participant: My son he was basically in the ICU. The first trip that we came I saw a definite change in my son.
Gia: and at Island Dolphin Care in Key Largo. It's making magical moments happen every day.
Alicia: The minute he got in it was like smile from ear to ear. He loved it loved it.
Gretchen Thomasson, Island Dolphins Care: The most common benefit we see across the board is increase in self-esteem and self-confidence.
Gia: Born with a heart defect Joe Hoagland suffered a massive stroke at age 3. His parents turned to dolphins when he didn't respond to traditional therapy.
Joe Hoagland, inspired parents to found IDC: The doctors had told my Mom and Dad that it is not possible. Best thing you can do is to stick him in an institution.
Gia: But that all changed when Joe got in the water with the dolphins.
Peter Hoagland, Joes' father: Seeing his success my wife had said: 'would you like me to create a program for all the children in our community with special needs and disabilities. And that is how it all started.
Gia: Today families travel from across the world to find hope here in Key Largo.
Alicia Spencer, participant: They also include siblings they allow them to interact. The all-family dynamic changes throughout their time here.
I think it gives them a really a good chance to be together have fun together play together. Where as a lot of the time he is in the hospital.
Gia: Learning new abilities through. laughter, smiles, and above all acceptance.
Peter: It is such a powerful tool. My wife says frequently is that when she found the dolphins she went from being a caretaker for a very disabled child to a mother again.
