HELLO-2 SHOT

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M JOE ROETZ.

AND I'M KELLY CRESWELL.

TODAY IS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23RD.

WE'LL HAVE A LOOK AT TODAY'S TOP STORIES IN JUST A MINUTE.

BUT FIRST METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING IS HERE WITH YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The weather system that provided all the clouds and rain Saturday will push farther south today, keeping the best chance of a shower over southern portions of the viewing area. The good news is for most of us, we'll be in store for a lot more sunshine today as dry air settles in from the north.

Enough moisture will linger through the day to produce some isolated rain and more clouds over Hendry and Collier County. The areas most susceptible to seeing shower will be along and southeast of a line from Clewiston through Immokalee to Naples, but even here, rain chances will be dropping through the day as the drier air starts filtering in.

Temperatures should be much warmer today with more sunshine in play. On Saturday we only warmed into the mid 80s, but most spots should close in on 90 degrees this afternoon. Another nice chance we'll notice today is a slight drop in humidity. It won't be a big difference, but enough dry air should mix in to keep our heat index at more tolerable levels.

Look for our sky to stay mostly clear tonight, and our temperatures will be more comfortable, too, with lows expected to cool into the low 70s. Locations deeper inland will get even cooler with lows there in the mid to upper 60s.

Monday and Tuesday will be mostly dry days as our atmosphere stays fairly tame. We may manage to squeeze out one or two late-day showers, but rain chances will be on the low side. Meanwhile, our temperatures will stay close to average with highs close to 90 and low in the low 70s. Our sky should stay mostly sunny both days.

By mid week, moisture will start building back over Southwest Florida, so we'll start noticing increasing rain chances by Wednesday and even more so by Thursday.

As we approach the upcoming weekend, the forecast will call for a mix of sun and clouds with highs close to 90s along with more scattered afternoon storms. Return to index of stories...

CRIME STOPPERS-PKG

"9-1-1 what's your emergency? There's been a severe accident on State Road 82…."

Since January, Lee County dispatchers have received 39 similar calls - of crashes that resulted in fatalties. But this particular call has investigators still trying to piece together the series of events that took the life of 18 year old John Simpson.

On August 6th, in the midst of a heavy rainstorm during rush hour, Simpson had a fatal encounter on State Road 82 in Lehigh.

Cpl. Lenny Gould - "The driver lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons at this point. His vehicle then drove left of center, into the path of an eastbound Prius."

The driver of that car could only see headlights and a large splash of water before she unavoidably slammed into the drivers side door of the Lincoln Continental.

9-1-1 caller: "Oh my gosh - it's terrible. One of the vehicles is smoking. It's pretty bad. The people in the vehicle are not OK."

As detectives investigated the case, they found there was a third vehicle involved - a boxy dark blue colored car.

Cpl. Gould - "As both vehicles were in rotation after impact, a third vehicle struck the Prius in the passenger door."

Trish Routte: The driver of that third vehicle may or may not even know that they were involved in the wreck - due to the heavy rain and hindered visibility. But deputies desperately need to talk to the driver to help figure out how things transpired that afternoon.

Cpl. Gould - "The driver of this car had a better vantage point and I need to know what they saw."

Though the driver of that mystery third vehicle is not at fault in the accident, the information they can share could be pivotal for investigators.

Cpl. Gould - "The easiest way to describe this is I have a puzzle. And I have a bunch of pieces of the puzzle and, unfortunately, I'm still missing several pieces. And that person, regardless of what they think may or may not have been important, may have the one piece of information to put the whole picture together."

The ultimate goal is to be able to give a grieving mother a full and complete accounting of the crash that took her young son's life.

Cpl. Gould - "I understand it's not going to bring her son back, it's not going to make things better, but at least it'll give her some understanding as to what happened and maybe help her through the healing process."

For Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, I'm Trish Routte. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL
