CAPE CORAL LEADERS TACKLE PENSIONS INSIDE COUNCIL CHAMBERS TONIGHT.

CAPE PENSION FIGHT-REM1

The city will save about 120,000 dollars a year by capping overtime and leave hours applied to pensions as required now by the state.

Some union leaders say this type of pinching pennies isn't exactly fair. Return to index of stories...

CAPE PENSION FIGHT-PKG

Take police/fire nats

On the front lines in our community -- firefighters and police officers risk their lives daily.

Under attack they claim -- is one solemn public promise.

Brendan Fonock, firefighter union president

1611 "you should be compensated for hours worked. Your pension is nothing more than deferred pay."

Cape Coral's firefighter union president Brendan Fonock -- tell us a state law changes how many overtime and leave hours apply to public servants' pensions.

Fonock

1541 "somebody in the end could be punished for a lack of a better term for working too much and not getting these earnings."

The law -- passed last year -- caps overtime hours at 300 hours.

If a firefighter or a cop works over that amount of time -- it doesn't factor into their retirement plan.

Money experts say the small change means significant savings.

Victoria Bateman, cape coral finance director

2507 "this would help to reduce the costs."

Finance director Victoria Bateman explains the change would save 120,000 this year alone -- that's 3 point 6 million dollars over 30 years.

She says When the economy tanked in 08 local governments were on the hook for parts of the pension typically funded by investments.

Bateman

2554 "the dramatic increase over te last 4 years is because of the market."

Bateman predicts pension costs to come down -- making the public promise cheaper.

2705 "we all recognize we have an issue to make sure it's sustainable so when the day comes that they retire that the funds are there."

Until that happens -- some argue those serving on these streets must sacrifice a little more whether fair or unfair.

Fonock

1647 "we've become the crunch of why the economy is in a downturn and it's not the case." Return to index of stories...

CAPE PENSION FIGHT-REM1

Now since this is now state law, city leaders must abide by it.

They can always ask firefighters and police officers for more sacrifice at the bargaining table.

Last year, governor Rick Scott lead the charge to make state employees pay into their pension plans.

The fl supreme court is now deciding whether that law will stand.

Count on us to let you know what happens.

The new study, published in the journal Nature, is the largest of its kind

ever conducted. looking at breast cancer on the genetic level. mapping

the origins of the disease by analyzing tumors from hundreds of patients.

Some experts are calling it a major step forward.

SOT Norton

it's going to give us a lot of information that we're going to use to

understand cancer better and design better cancer treatments.:

The study confirmed earlier findings that breast cancers fall into four

distinct categories. and sometimes act like *other* cancers. ABC's chief

health and medical editor Dr. Richard Besser says this could provide doctors

with more treatment options.

SOT Besser

CERTAIN BREAST CANCERS ARE MUCH MORE LIKE OVARIAN CANCER AND THAT MAY LEAD

SOME DRS TO TREAT THOSE BREAST CANCERS WITH OTHER DRUGS.

SOT Norton

This is a very important roadmap of the genes that go wrong.

But, cautions Dr. Larry Norton of New York's Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer

Center, the roadmap. isn't complete.

SOT Norton

It's like a map that has all the cities and the villages and the towns, but

doesn't have all the roads, the bridges and the stop signs. So, there's a

lot that we have to do to connect the dots.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

INCREASING RAIN CHANCES THIS WEEK

We're starting the week off just right - high clouds, sunshine, and no rain. Of course this will not last. Humidity levels will begin rising, it'll feel uncomfortable, and by the end of the week showers will return.

The cloud cover we had on Monday came from thunderstorms in the Caribbean and Gulf. How does that happen? Simple. The winds thousands of feet in the air clipped the cloud tops and spread them over southwest Florida. At times it looked like it would rain, but it never did. The air under the clouds was just too dry. If rain did fall, it would evaporate before it reached the surface.

The drier air will soon be replaced with the nasty tropical air by midweek. That's when heat index values will rise, and isolated storms become numerous.

This will be a gradual transition. A few thunderstorms will be evident on radar Tuesday, they'll be widely spaced. Wednesday through Friday rain chances continue to increase - it'll be a return to the "norm" for southwest Florida. Mix of sun and clouds, and scattered thunderstorms each afternoon.

The weekend forecast looks like another split decision. One day looks nice while the other day doesn't. The best day will be Saturday. There will be some thunderstorms with mostly cloudy skies. Sunday will be quite the soaker as skies will be overcast and there will be numerous thunderstorms to track! That carries over into Monday, too, so expect a wet commute to work and school.

Conditions on the waters look nice for you beach and boat goers. Winds will be fairly light, and the inland waterways will have a slight chop.

There's nothing of concern in the tropics! Return to index of stories...
