LEHIGH FIRE DISTRICT TALKS-ON CAM

IT'S THE FIRST SIGN OF A POSSIBLE RESOLUTION BETWEEN THE LEHIGH ACRES FIRE DISTRICT AND THE UNION.

NBC-2'S GEORGE SOLIS REPORTS HOW THE TWO SIDES HOPE TO SOLVE THE CONTRACT CONFLICT ONCE AND FOR ALL. Return to index of stories...

LEHIGH FIRE DISTRICT TALKS-PKG

THROUGH THE SMOKE THERE'S NOW SOME CLARITY NOW BETWEEN THE FUTURE RELATIONSHIP OF THE LEHIGH ACRES FIRE DISTRICT AND FIREFIGHTERS UNION.

33:56 "It was a positive step." 34:03 - Don Adams, Lehigh Acres Fire Chief

WHAT THE UNION HAS PROPOSED A TRUCE OF SORTS THAT WILL KEEP THE DISTRICT FROM A SERIOUS FINANCIAL BLOW ON TOP OF A 1-POINT-9 MILLION DOLLAR SHORTFALL.

39:49 "The most important thing that it's preventing is that the district through its hardships doesn't have to incur a further hardship of 1.6 million dollars." -Walt Stevens President IAFF, Local 1826

DURING LAST NIGHTS FIRE BOARD MEETING UNION MEMBERS BLAMED A LOT OF THE TENSION ON THE LAW FIRM THAT'S BEEN REPRESENTING THE DISTRICT.

51:47 "We are hemorrhaging attorney's fees like somebody cut my leg off."

SOME CRITICIZED COMMISSIONERS SAYING THE DISTRICT'S ATTORNEY, NIK JOSHI, IS THE ONE RUNNING THE DEPARTMENT.

03:57 "That's completely untrue I do not make the decisions. Nobody at my law firm makes decisions for the clients. The clients make the decisions and I do what I've been told by the client." 04:06 Nikhil Joshi, Kunkel Miller and Hament

MEANING THE TWO STILL HAVE TO WORK OUT THE DETAILS OF THEIR CONTACTS.

STEVENS SAYS ALL THE UNION WANTS IS TO KEEP THE STATUS QUO.

41:50 "We just want it to maintain, to continue to do our part and rebuilding Lehigh." 41:56 THE UNION BELIEVES IT CAN BE DONE WITHOUT ATTORNEYS. THE DISTRICT ARGUES AT THIS POINT, IT'S ONLY A POSSIBILITY.

36:49 "Can you negotiate without attorney's? Yes. Both sides have to be willing to do so and have to be open and honest communications in doing that."

NEGOTIATIONS WILL BEGIN SOON. FOR NOW WHAT BOTH AGREE ON: PUBLIC SAFETY IS FIRST AND FOREMOST THEIR PRIMARY CONCERN.GS NBC-2. Return to index of stories...

Tim mankin makes a living cooking and selling Barbeque.

But his real money maker-

Sot Tim mankind, burger que owner

" almost everybody loves bacon, unless you're a vegetarian or can't eat bacon- bacons good."

It's good-

And it sells.

Sot Tim

" when we develop new products, most of the time bacon is involved."

He also heavily relies on pork.

Products he plans to keep buying- even if there is a price increase.

And he's not alone.

Sot Vincent pica, marios manager

" one way or another i will find pork."

Pigs- now in high demand.

This summers drought in the midwest affected corn and other pig food.

Sot Vincent

" the sizes of pigs being slaughtered are smaller so the yield is less."

And that means the prices are up.

Sot Vincent

" for what it is that we do and what we use will it affect the regular pork market as a whole, not as much as they say, will pork bellys and bacon go through the roof, yes."

By the end of the year, suppliers are predicting an 12 to 20 percent increase in price for consumers.

Sot Vincent

" basic pork chop at $3 a pound, yeah you could be looking at close to $4"

As for the bacon-

Nat sizzle

Burger que has already seen a 30 percent spike since may.

Sot Tim

" we charge 75 cents to add bacon to something, if we wanted to maintain the same margin as may- we'd have to charge $1.25."

So he's making a plan- to make sure that doesn't happen.

Sot Tim

Were actually working eith one of our suppliers I called him today and asked if we could stock up on 6 months worth or bacon. I've got a lot of freezer space." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Clouds dominated our skies once again today across Southwest Florida with little to no sunshine. This has kept temperatures well below the 90° mark with most locations sitting in the middle to upper 80s.

Up until this point, the vast majority of the area has stayed mainly dry with only a few sprinkles and patchy rain areas showing up on radar. A few downpours will try to get going late this afternoon and will linger into the early evening hours.

Once the rain fades tonight, our skies will go fairly quiet and the clouds will begin to thin just a bit overnight as lows settle into the mid 70s by morning.

Our Thursday will more than likely start off with more clouds and dry weather. Through the afternoon, a few more rays of sunshine will breakout allowing temperatures to rebound into the low 90s. We'll also be in more of a summertime pattern, where showers and a few storms favor the afternoon and evening hours close to the urban corridor.

Friday and into the weekend, expect a mix of sun and clouds, while most of the rain activity holds off until the afternoon. With a turn in our steering winds by Sunday off the Gulf of Mexico, a few morning showers can't be ruled out before they get pushed deeper inland by the afternoon.

Early next week, a cold front will stall across the Peninsula just to the north of the area. This will keep our weather pattern a bit unsettled as we kick off the month of October.

In the tropics, things are relatively quiet. The only storm brewing in the Atlantic Basin is Nadine as it remains 500 miles to the southwest of the Azores. Models are hinting at no tropical troubles at least for the next 5 to 7 days. Return to index of stories...
