Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
MIXED BAG OF WEATHER IN THE FORECAST
Your seven day forecast as a little bit of everything. If you enjoy the sunshine - you'll be happy. If you enjoy the clouds - you'll be happy. Rain, 80s and 90s - ditto, you get the picture. There will be something for everyone.
Thursday was a little quieter than Wednesday, and I do expect Friday to be pretty benign as well. We finally lost the extensive amount of cloud cover, and it made the past couple of days great!
Why?
We're stuck between two weather systems, a high pressure to the east and an area of high pressure to the west. The one to our west is winning out and will continue to do so until Sunday. It's providing us with winds from the northwest in the upper reaches of the atmosphere which brings down drier air. That drier air limits our rain chances and gives us sunny skies.
Friday and Saturday look to be the same. Mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies with a very slim chance of a late day downpour or storm. Areal coverage is less than 30% so I expect these to be very hit or miss.
Of course this nice weather will not always be around. Sunday clouds start to increase. We still see a lot of sunshine, but there will be more clouds to pepper the blue sky. Our rain percentage begins stair stepping from Sunday on, too.
Eventually Monday through Wednesday comes around, and that is when widespread showers return. Of course that will keep our highs below average, too, which will feel fantastic.
In summary, this weekend looks decent. Get out and enjoy it while you can because next week looks a little soggy.

40-MILLION PEOPLE OWN E-READERS.
BUT THERE IS A LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT THE POPULAR E-BOOK OR TABLET.
AS LIZ CRENSHAW REPORTS--
SOME E-READERS KEEP TRACK OF YOUR BEDTIME READING HABITS.
Return to index of stories...
"I feel like its a little bit too close to my personal space."
"If I underline, if I make a note, it is for myself."
WHEN YOU READ A BOOK, OTHER THAN THE TITLE ON THE COVER, NO ONE REALLY KNOWS YOUR READING HABITS.
UNTIL NOW. IF YOU READ ON SOME ELECTRONIC READERS, ALL YOUR BOOK CHOICES AND HOW YOU MARK OR TAKE NOTES ARE COLLECTED. WHEN YOU DOWNLOAD A NEW BOOK, ALL THAT DATA GOES BACK TO THE COMPANY WHO SOLD IT TO YOU.
"The easiest way to say it, is your ereader is reading you."
DAVID JACOBS WITH THE ELECTRONIC PRIVACY INFORMATION CENTER SAYS ITS LIKE HAVING THE PUBLISHER, AUTHOR, OR EVEN LAW ENFORCEMENT WATCHING YOU READ.
"Which passages did she highlight, how long did she read the book for, almost as if they were right in the room with her looking over her shoulder taking notes."
"I am not a fan of that, pretty invasive, don't agree with it at all."
SO WHY WOULD AN E BOOK MAKER WANT TO KNOW THE NITTY GRITTY OF HOW YOU READ? CERTAINLY… MARKETING.
IMAGINE THE VALUE TO A PUBLISHER TO KNOW READERS NEVER GET PAST PAGE 300 IN THIS BOOK OR READERS RE-READ THE SECTIONS WITH THIS PARTICULAR CHARACTER.
"That sort of thing would be useful in helping to market different authors and different readers habits."
BUT WHAT ABOUT YOUR PRIVACY? READING CHOICES DO REVEAL INTIMATE FACTS ABOUT WHO WE ARE. OUR POLITICS. OUR PLEASURES.
WHAT DID YOU UNDERLINE IN "THE PRICE OF POLITICS"? WHAT DID YOU HIGHLIGHT IN "50 SHADES OF GRAY?"
SO WHAT CAN COMPANIES DO WITH THAT INFORMATION?
"Obviously there has to be some kind of red line as to how far that can go. And where their marketing should end and my privacy should begin."
BUT THE FACT IS YOU GAVE UP YOUR PRIVACY WHEN YOU SIGNED UP.
"If you read the terms of service very closely you can find out about this but of course nobody does."
WE DID. TAKE A LOOK AT PART OF THE POLICIES OF TWO OF THE BIGGEST E-READERS.
AMAZON KINDLES LICENSE AGREEMENT SAYS IN PART ". ANNOTATIONS, BOOKMARKS, NOTES, HIGHLIGHTS, OR SIMILAR MARKINGS YOU MAKE USING YOUR KINDLE OR READING APPLICATION AND OTHER INFORMATION YOU PROVIDE MAY BE STORED ON SERVERS…"
BARNES AND NOBLE'S NOOK: TERMS OF SERVICE ".WITHOUT LIMITATION, WE WILL COLLECT, USE AND/OR DISCLOSE INFORMATION REGARDING YOU AND YOUR USE OF YOUR NOOK AND THE SERVICE…
SO DO THE COMPANIES SHARE YOUR PERSONAL READING HABITS?
BARNES AND NOBLE TOLD US: ".INFORMATION ABOUT READING BEHAVIOR IS INVALUABLE IN HELPING US CREATE BEST IN CLASS READING DEVICES. WE DO HAVE GREAT RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR PUBLISHERS BUT DO NOT SHARE SPECIFIC CUSTOMER INFORMATION WITH THEM. "
WE ASKED THE SAME QUESTION OF AMAZON. AND AFTER A MONTH OF TRYING, WE HAVE NOT GOTTEN A RESPONSE.

THIS WEEK OUR EDUCATION NATION SERIES--
IS FOCUSING ON THE ISSUES AND PEOPLE WHO ARE SHAPING THE FUTURE.
FLORIDA IS IN THE PROCESS OF SWEEPING CHANGES.
THINGS LIKE MERIT PAY FOR TEACHERS AND NEW FORMS OF TESTING.
NBC-2 CHIEF POLITICAL REPORTER CHAD OLIVER SPOKE ONE-ON-ONE WITH THE MAN PUSHING FOR THOSE CHANGES - GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT.
Return to index of stories...
"Hi Good morning Governor. How are you."
DURING A VISIT TO LEE COUNTY THIS MONTH, GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT DEFENDED MERIT PAY. HIS PLAN TO TIE TEACHER SALARIES WITH STUDENT PERFORMANCE BEGINNING IN 20-14.
I want to make sure we reward teachers based on student achievement. That what we should be doing. I want the best teachers to keep teaching in our state."
TEACHER MERIT PAY WAS THE FIRST BILL SCOTT SIGNED AS GOVERNOR IN 20-11.
HE THEN ELIMINATED TENURE FOR NEW K THOUGH 12 TEACHERS.
THAT FIRST YEAR, HE ALSO CUT EDUCATION FUNDING BY ONE-POINT-ONE BILLION.
THIS YEAR FLORIDA'S GOVERNOR IS TRYING TO STRENGHTHEN HIS IMAGE AMONG EDUCATORS.
HE ADDED ONE BILLION *BACK INTO PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
SPENT A WEEK RECENTLY VISITING SCHOOLS ON WHAT HE CALLED A 'LISTENING TOUR.'
AND SENT THIS LETTER TO TEACHERS SAYING. HE'S "LISTENED TO FLORIDA'S EDUCATORS WHO ARE CONCERNED ABOUT 'TEACHING TO THE TEST.'"
SCHOOLS ARE NOW TRANSITIONING AWAY FROM THE F-CAT TOWARD A NEW FORM TESTING. 'COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS.'
'You won't be able to just teach a test. It will be tied to critical thinking and things like that, so that's a real positive."
IT WILL ALLOW FLORIDA TEACHERS TO COMPARE HOW THEIR STUDENTS STACK UP AGAINST OTHER STATES. SCOTT SAYS THE END GOAL IS TO COMPETE IN A GLOBAL MARKET.
"so we have to have an education system that educates people for the jobs of the future. A lot of that is going to be science, technology, engineering and math." 03
THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION DEPENDS IN LARGE PART ON WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE CONVENES AGAIN IN MARCH.
THAT'S WHEN GOVERNOR SCOTT WILL GIVE HIS STATE OF THE STATE SPEECH - WHERE WE'LL FIND OUT WHAT HE TOOK AWAY FROM HIS TRIPS BACK TO SCHOOL.

SIMULTANEOUS CATCH -
THAT WAS THE CALL BY REPLACEMENT REFS MONDAY NIGHT GIVING THE SEAHAWKS A LAST-MINUTE WIN OVER THE PACKERS.
"It was a joke. It was an absolute fiasco. It was an embarrassment. A total embarrassment. It was terrible, just terrible."
TODAY ATTORNEY JEFF RICE TRAINS HIS EYES ON HIS E-MAILS - BUT COME SUNDAY - HE'LL BE CONCENTRATING ON A FOOTBALL.
"If you've ever seen someone go flying through the air, that's me."
RICE HAS BEEN OFFICIATING N-F-L GAMES FOR THE LAST 18 YEARS -- INCLUDING SUPER BOWLS 36 AND 38 ON THE FIELD AND 35 AS AN ALTERNATE.
HE LEARNED TODAY THE REPLACEMENT REFS OUT OF THE GAME, AND THE PROS ARE BACK IN.
"In one way, I feel sorry for them because they've been villified, but rightfully so, and in another way, I'm not happy with them because they really, they were disloyal to their officiating fraternity by going out there and trying to work as something for which they're totally unqualified."
"It's a very fast game and it's a lot of speed to the game and there's a lot that goes on. You need experience. You've got to have experience at this. You can't - as people have found out --, you can't just take them and throw them out there."
LARRY ROSE OWNS STADIUM CLEANERS ON DANIELS PARKWAY - BUT SUNDAY WILL KICK OFF HIS 16TH YEAR AS AN N-F-L REF.
HE WAS A SIDE JUDGE IN SUPERBOWL 42.
"It was a tremendous experience."
HE EXPLAINS IF THE PROFESSIONAL REFS HAD BEEN ON THE FIELD MONDAY - THAT LAST CALL WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT.
"it was not a simultaneous catch, and it was an interception and that's just the way it is."
THE OUTCRY FROM MONDAY NIGHT'S GAME SPED THE NEGOTIATORS -- NOW BOTH MEN SAY THEY'RE GLAD TO GO BACK.
"It's a late start, but it's a good start, but I'm glad we're getting back on the field and i'm ready to go."
