FIRST WEATHER-OMNI-ANI-BOXES

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

NICE WEEKEND IN STORE

If you're wanting to get outside and play a little golf, go to the beach, or maybe go fishing - do it this weekend. Heavy rains are moving in Monday, and that will put a stranglehold on your plans next week!

As I expected today was gorgeous. There was nothing to worry about weather wise unless you lost the shades.

Saturday and Sunday will be just as great. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast, and highs in the lower 90s. Could we see an isolated shower or thunderstorm? Yes, but not so much on Saturday. The best chance for rain this weekend will be on Sunday.

Sunday will also serve as our transition. There will still be a lot of sun, but there will be more clouds.

Overall it's going to be a spectacular weekend, but get ready for next week.

Our winds are shifting to the southwest due to a frontal boundary stalling out to our north. That's going to draw up a lot of moisture. We will see intervals of rain all day long from Monday through Friday. They'll start in the in the morning and last through the afternoon, evening, and possibly after midnight.

The wettest of will be Tuesday and Wednesday.

As a result highs will stay in the 80s! Return to index of stories...

I was like why is there smoke in the house - what's going on. I realized there was a fire and I need to tell my mom and dad.

Tanner Lucas woke up just after 4 this morning to find smoke filling his bedroom on Edison Avenue.

As flames swept through -

The three quickly crawled to a corner of the house - making a getaway through this bedroom window- then over a fence whee they called for help.

PANTHER HIT FDOT LAWSUIT-PKG-BNR

A broken clavicle, skin torn off his body and fractured ribs. All the result of an motorcycle accident that has Kenneth Nolan lucky to be alive.

Lawrence Bohannon/Attorney

9:08:54 "Could have been death to the guy on the motorcycle, very fortunate."

Nolan was riding his motorcycle along U.S. 41 east back in March when a Florida Panther ran out in front of him. The panther populated area had a wildlife warning system installed just months earlier but it failed to do its job.

Lawrence/attorney

9:00:16 "Motorist didn't know there was a panther in the area,no detection and it resulted in a collision."

9:01:10 It was a product designed by the state of Florida to warn motorists of panther crossings and it didn't work."

While the Panther got up and disappeared, Nolan wasn't so lucky. And now he and his attorney are filing a lawsuit against FDOT and TransCore, who are behind the roadside animal detection system.

Lawrence/attorney

9:02:02 "The allegations are that the product was defected and it didn't work and there is certainly ample evidence to support that."

Experts say that with the Panther population as high as it's been in years, accidents like this could happen to anyone, making the significance of these animal detection systems larger then ever.

MARC CRIFFIELD/PANTHER BIOLOGIST

9:11:16 "Oh certainly, more people on the road, more cats out on landscape, yeah they're going to meet."

Lawrence

9:03:42 "Hopefully this lawsuit will have an effect on the company to redesign it."

9:05:48 "The goal is to increase the liability of this product and make it work." Return to index of stories...

THE DISTRICT WILL USE SOME OF THE MONEY TO PAY MENTOR TEACHERS TO WORK WITH NEWER TEACHERS.

AN ALARMING NUMBER OF TEACHERS LEAVE THE PROFESSION WITHIN THE FIRST FIVE YEARS OF BEING HIRED.

THE REASONS--

STRESS, SUPPORT AND SALARY.

7TH GRADE MATH TEACHER CHELSEA MONTGOMERY WANTS STUDENTS TO HAVE THE BEST.

NATS

SHE'S ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO KEEP HER LESSON PLANS INTERESTING.

Just trying out what works, how do I change it, and being flexible with my day to day schedule with my students.

MONTGOMERY IS ONE OF MORE THAN 500 TEACHERS NEW TO THE LEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT.

SINCE IT'S HER FIRST YEAR. MONTGOMERY IS MATCHED WITH A PEER TEACHER TO HELP HER ADJUST TO WHERE SHE TEACHES.

LEHIGH ACRES MIDDLE SCHOOL.

My primary goal is to ensure that our peer teachers are prepared and ready for their classroom so that they're comfortable.

DOCTOR CHEVONEESE THOMAS IS MONTGOMERY'S PEER TEACHER.

THEY MEET SEVERAL TIMES A MONTH.

AND FROM DAY ONE. THOMAS SAYS THEY TELL ALL NEW TEACHERS WHAT'S EXPECTED OF THEM.

If we link them with other teachers who are teaching the very same subject with them who are pretty good at the process than that's very helpful.

THIS KIND OF SUPPORT IS DESIGNED TO KEEP TEACHERS.

NATIONALLY, HALF OF THE COUNTRY'S TEACHERS QUIT WITHIN THEIR FIRST FIVE YEARS.

LEE COUNTY'S RATE ISN'T FAR OFF AT 47 PERCENT.

To lose them and have a constant 47 percent turnover is taxing to the schools it's taxing to the district.

DONNA MUTZENARD, WHO WORKS WITH THE TEACHER'S UNION, SAYS REASONS THEY QUIT INCLUDE STRESS, SALARY, AND LACK OF SUPPORT.

NATS

TO FIX THAT, THE SCHOOL DISTRICT GAVE TEACHERS RAISES THIS YEAR.

AND THE DISTRICT AND UNION ARE LOOKING TO STRENGTHEN THE PEER TEACHER PROGRAM.

THE UNION SUGGESTS HAVING FULL-TIME MENTOR TEACHERS WHO CAN SPEND MORE TIME FOCUSING SUPPORT TO THOSE NEW IN THE PROFESSION.

I think it would make them feel more valued as a teacher.

MONTGOMERY FEELS CONFIDENT NOW THAT SHE HAS ALL THE SUPPORT SHE'LL NEED.

AND IS EXCITED ABOUT HER NEW ROLE.

I'm here to help the students and that's always my number one goal.
